Advantages: new features, new look Disadvantages: high screen resolution required to get a decent work area
...myself with the purchase of Dreamweaver MX – the successor to Dreamweaver 4, a product which I had used since its launch in late 2000, having grown-up with Dreamweaver – I remember using Dreamweaver 1.2 at the company I worked for in Brussels way way back… The entire MX range is effectively version six, with the Flash player being called Flash 6 player (it is a plug-in rather than a fully fledged software package). Following hot on the heels of Macromedia’s ... ...is not the case with Dreamweaver MX, which has a new look (something tells me that the on-going legal rumblings with Adobe might have necessitated that to a certain degree) and a lot of new features. Previously there had been Dreamweaver and Dreamweaver Ultradev, with the latter containing the functions that were used to create web applications, although it has now been including in Dreamweaver MX so effectively you get DW and DW Ultradev for your ...

Advantages: Endless formats supported, predictive-coding for PHP Disadvantages: Knowing a new version will be just around the corner
Macromedia Dreamweaver MX – the 5th release of Dreamweaver in as many years. Released just 14 months after its predecessor, is Dreamweaver MX a vast improvement on Dreamweaver 4 or just a nice pocket liner for Macromedia? I will take a close look at some of its newest tools and features, to see how justified the release of Dreamweaver MX is.
On first impressions, Dreamweaver MX ‘welcomes you with open arms’ to a new, yet recognisable user interface. ... ...and underneath the skin of Dreamweaver MX lie many significant and major updates. What was found in Dreamweaver 4 is still here but it has been seamlessly incorporated with Dreamweaver Ultradev and HomeSite into one package. This has created an extremely powerful product, with what seems like an endless list of supported web formats. These include the likes of ASP, .NET, XHTML, CFML, PHP, JSP, XML, RDS and not to mention the formerly ColdFusion 5. ...

Macromedia’s Dreamweaver MX is for professional Web designers and developers. And that's great if you know what you're doing. Dreamweaver's new integration with UltraDev lets you create dynamic, database-driven Web applications. In addition, Dreamweaver's thorough ColdFusion, ASP, and JSP support gives it a edge over its competitors .
I recommend Dreamweaver MX for building a heavy-duty commercial Web site, but casual Web site builders should try ... ...time. Newcomers, beware; you’ll Dreamweaver MX's interface intimendating.
It combines the functionality of three powerful Macromedia packages: you get the most popular bits from the HomeSite HTML editor and ColdFusion Studio 5, plus all the functionality of the UltraDev application developer. From HomeSite, Dreamweaver borrows effort-saving editing tools such as Code Hints, the Snippets Panel and Tag Choosers, each of which speeds up the coding ...

Advantages: Wow! Easy to create web apps, good support for filetypes Disadvantages: Not hugely robust
I loved Dreamweaver 4.. apart from the fact it separates you from the tedium of writing HTML code from scratch, it allows you to preview your pages in a browser without uploading them, allows you to upload them with a quick press on the keyboard (doing away with ftp clients), lets you view your code and layout at the same time, manage your site files and so many other little things that make a web developer's life easy...
But there was always room ... ...everything the previous version of Dreamweaver was and more. It is much more geared to creating full scale Web Applications and more powerful. It has better support for database interaction and for other file types (it will highlight PHP and Javascript code properly).
It has a multitude of extra features like allowing dynamic dropdown list values and inserting of ASP components.
For creating static, small websites that you will update manually ...

...certain users. Back to Dreamweaver even if you haven't got a clue about CSS or HTML coding, not to worry because just like MS Publisher you can create using a design view, allowing you to create layers and put pictures and text among other things. Advantages: Huge amount of options available Disadvantages: Not for total beginners
Having been using Dreamweaver for the past couple of releases, I've grown quite fond of it. Now with MX I think they've done all they can do to make the best web authoring tool around.
One of the first things I noticed and I liked about it, was when first firing it up it gives the option to use the old Dreamweaver4 layout - makes for a nice stepping stone into the MX world, and once you get used to all the extra features you can switch to the MX ... ...the faults I had with Dreamweaver was a lack of support for other file types - although you could load most types there was no direct support for scripting them. Now with MX, you can edit directly all the different languages you might wish to use in your website.
Although web programming knowledge is needed to use MX, it also has the option to insert standard objects - now including standard objects from PHP, Javascript, etc - to save time and effort ...
