TODAY’S LECTURE IS ON… Batteries - let's start with a fact of the day Most children are taught that Alassandro Volta invented the battery in 1800 – but is this really the case? Another school of thought suggests that actually, the battery may have been created a whopping two thousand years before Volta was even conceived. During a railway construction in 1936, archeologist Wilhelm Konig unearthed a small jar in a cave just outside Bagdad. The jar was lined with copper and featured an iron rod protruding from its top. By filling the jar with vinegar, scientists discovered its ability to produce ... more

With a market share of around 52%, Duracell is the UK’s biggest retailer of household batteries. Renowned for those ‘bunny’ adverts (that either entertain you or drive you up the wall) the brand has always positioned itself based on the fact that it lasts longer than any other. Given that you buy batteries to ‘make something work’ this seems like a reasonable proposition. The alkaline batteries featured here are, in fact, not marketed as the best batteries that Durcacell offer; that accolade goes to Duracell Ultra, which has a combines better conductive elements, with more active ingredients ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive, can work out cheaper to buy cheapo batteries and keep changing them

A battery is just a battery, isn’t it? Well apparently not if all the different battery manufacturers are telling the truth. All the different manufacturers would like us to think their’s are the best and there are so many different brands to choose from. But ask the majority of people which brand of battery lasts the longest, and 9 out of 10 are likely to say Duracell, such is the power of advertising. One of the things you soon realise as a parent, is that it’s a good idea to have a stockpile of various sizes of battery and that it may be worth paying a little more not to have to be ... more

DURACELL - BATTERY Product: MN 1500 - Double A *House-hold devices mainly* ----- ------ ---- Definition of a battery: - A component of any size that is used to produce electricity from a chemical reaction. On a quiet weekend whilst watching the telly the Durcell advert came on where the bunnies were doing a bit of rock climbing and only the bunny with the duracell batteries made it to the top (whilst carrying the other bunnies who had inferior batteries). In the interest of science, and to combat boredom, I decided to test out the Duracell claim that their batteries last so much longer than other brands. So I popped down to the shops to buy a couple of bunnies...... only joking. Looking around my house I tried to find two similar battery run items that I could use to test the batteries. ***THE ... more

I don't write about the subeject of th e week very often, however I just thought that I would like to give it a go this week because I use this product quite a bit. Duracell as we know make batteries of all descriptions, shapes and sizes for a whole manner of items or luxuries that we all use. However, today I shall be talking about the size of battery that perhaps we all use the most - more commonly known as the 'Double A' battery, it is used for things such as children's toys at Christmas (the amount I spend on batteries at Christmas is almost as much as the presents in themselves!), and ... more

I bought a pack of these four AA Duracell Long Lasting Power batteries from Asda, and they set me back £2.85. I thought that this was a reasonable prce for batteries that will work many appliances around the home. The most I have seen these batteries for is around £3.60. I do think I got a deal for these four batteries. I have seen batteries from other manufacturers, and supermarket's own brands. I think that Duracell are a good brand and I have noticed that these batteries have longer life than other brands that I have used like supermarket brands, to see if there was any difference. There ... more

    Advantages Advantages Very long lasting

Disadvantages Disadvantages A little large than the average AA battery

Duracell batteries do last a very, very long time. This is probably a somewhat rare example of a product doing what the advert says it does! Last for ages longer than any normal battery! But that is, of course, a point to consider. Duracell lasts much longer than an ordinary battery, but does it last much longer than other Alkaline batteries made by other equally reputable firms for a little less money? Perhaps not. However, for the jobs that I need good, dependable batteries for, I tend to only use Duracell, because it is not worth taking the chance of embarrassing battery failure, is it? And ... more

Well this 4 battery pack is absolutely amazing and even though it is expensive you can expect to go on a long time if you use this, I have only Duracell batteries at my place due to their almost everlasting life. What’s the point of buying cheap batteries that die and get that angry look on your face in no time? Lets say for a simple application like a Discman, I was on vacation and had two Duracell spares in my pocket, the Discman also contained two, now I was on a week long vacation and I used my Discman pretty generously not to mention all the music we used to hear when we attached the ... more

Yes, a phrase we're all familiar with. Batteries not included. Surely the king of batteries, the pinnacle of the portable power supply (all be it not enough to power your xbox or tv in the middle of the woods) would have struck a deal with EVERYONE in the entire world that makes any portable electrical goods. Definately a brand that has been around for as long as I remember, with those amazing bunnies being able to rock climb and then pull the remaining bunnies up a cliff face. How many bunnies do you know that can do that? The Duracell MN 1500 Alkaline is a strong performing battery that will ... more
