Advantages: Easy to use web site. Works well in quiet markets Disadvantages: High failure rate of automatic trades. No stop-loss. Buy/sell prices carry a margin.
ETrade have a great web site and are easy to use. But making money on the stock market is not about a great website or ease of use, it's about knowing that when you hit buy or sell, your deal will execute. At no time is that more important than when the markets are busy or volatile. And this is exactly when ETrade will let you down. Only 10% of my trades go through automatically during busy times and the rest sit on a first-come-first-served queue ... ...do the trade. At busy times, this can (and has in my case) turn well timed, profit-making trades into disastrously timed, loss making wipe-outs. Many of my "buy low" orders at the start of a price run ended up only being executed at the very high at the top of the run, guaranteeing me a loss. And likewise so many of my "sell high" placements at the start of a drop ended up being executed only at the very end of the drop, at the lowest possible point. ...

Advantages: easy to use, informative, real-time quotes, quick executions, after-hours trade Disadvantages: there are none
I have read some excellent OPINIONS of E-TRADE written by experienced traders. I would like to thank them one and all.
My OPINION is one of a NEW E-TRADER. I find E-TRADE very easy to use. Type in a company name, get their stock symbol and voila! You will find quotes, daily ranges, charts, profiles, news, 52 wk. highs and lows, etc.---everything you need to begin. Although, I do not rely solely on the information E-TRADE offers. I also use AOL stock ... ...stock. I find AOL'S s research reports and news to be more informative than E-TRADE's in general.
I could not live without E-TRADE'S free real-time quotes. As a new investor that 20 minute delay just drives me up a wall. E-TRADE does not update your portfolio in real-time however. You can use the real-time quotes to calculate it on the side if you wish. I chose E-TRADE because of their reputation for being reliable. I thought my $ would be safe ...

Advantages: Maybe the 750 ipoints. Disadvantages: High trading charges, high fees, too many rampers.
I opened an E*Trade account through the ipoints (www.ipoints.co.uk) link which gives you 750 ipoints. (Note: you only need 825 ipoints for 3 DVD's..!). There are other "offers" around, I have heard of E*Trade giving £50 in your trading account as an incentive - though I could not find this offer available now.
I was charged a bi-annual administration fee of £25+VAT. (Note: I got a mail saying this fee was now going to be charged on a monthly basis ... ...account.
I find the E*Trade site to be too so slow to log into. I think this may be because you are directed onto a secure site to validate your details, and then passed back to the "normal" site to show you the fundamental data. Once you are logged into the general website, you need to log in again to access your personal trading account.
For in-frequent traders or people just getting started the bulletin boards inside the community hold some ...

Advantages: Easy for beginners. Everything online. Good Bulletin Board Disadvantages: Can be addictive
Etrade is a well established breed of online share trading companies which allows easy trading of UK (LSE), US (DOW/NASDAQ) and ISA equities.
There has been a recent downturn of private investors interested in the stock market due to the marked decline in the stock market over the past year.
However I am confident this is about to change and if you are a new private investor then this is a great time to start investing.
Sign yourself with Etrade ... ...actually get a lot of this back by registering with ipoints first. www.ipoints.co.uk.
Once your account is open then every purchase or sale execution can be performed online. You can set sell limits (kill) or buy limits (fill) orders which is particularly useful in today's volatile market.
The commissions are reasonable and compare favourably with the other competition.
Now, if you are a new investor then the biggest question has got to be...what ...

Advantages: Reasonable cost, good database of information Disadvantages: Cheaper is now available
...small trader, such as myself, E*Trade is perfectly adequate. You can make your purchases and sales online and at a reasonable cost (between £9 - £25 according to the value/number of transactions). You can make a portfolio of your shares and keep track of them on E*Trade on a minute-by-minute basis. HOWEVER, the prices are delayed by 15 minutes (unless you are making a purhcase/sale). Advantages: £50 sign up fee, helpdesk very efficient Disadvantages: £25 annual upkeep charges
E*trade is great if you're just an occasional trader and there is a £50 sign up fee thrown in when you register for their internet account (this may not be running now so check before signing). It was easy to set up, although I had to call a few times to get them to credit the £50 sign up fee. Their helpdesk is quick and efficient and seem to be always available when required.
Their fees are not too bad, again for the frequent trader there are cheaper ... ...that was only for a £500 trade, not good, But longterm investors don't mind this.
The nominee account works well for me and everything was explained well enough.
What they neglected to tell me was that there is a £25 annual charge for administration charges for the nominee account.
All in all, very good for long term traders making a relatively few number of trades. ...

One of the major players in execution only dealing. The fixed rate charges are competitive but I seem to get charged a monthly custody fee which doesnt seeem to be advertsied on their site. As with most online brokers their cash interest rates are very low.

I wasa member of e*trade for 15 months before they got round to phoning me to ask if i had any trouble logging into my 'new account' and had i tried the service? I had been logging in about 4-5 times a week and trading regularly. this just about sums this company up it ais a good solid website not too secure that it takes far too long to load with an exit button which exits from the website unlike some which only go to a 'do you wish to log out now?' ... ...got up and wallked away thinking you have logged out and are therefore safe. the website is brimming with info and you can select shares to follow but here is where it fails if you logout your stockwatch dissapears and you have to make it again (or not bother after a few goes)

Advantages: Not very expensive Disadvantages: Not too much information/research
I recently opened an account with these guys. I do not trade very often and I am still in my 1st 25 trades. Since I do not place any trade for more than £1,500, I am quite happy with the fact they only charge me £15 per trade. I like their Bullettin board very much, I learnt and heard many things, but the problem is to differentiate between the good information, which is not much, and the rampers and ramblers, which are a lot. The customer service is very poor.
