Disadvantages: In Places That Narrative Can Be Quite Fragmented, And It's So Frustrating After Getting To Know The Characters So Well It Isnt Such A Happy Ending...

After reading every single one of David Gemmell's novels, I have come to the conclusion that 'Echoes Of The Great Song' is the best. It is a fantastic, inspired account of the evolution of a civilisation, how legends and gods are born, and how fragile existence really is. Like all of Gemmell's books it is well written, with believable characters who can toy with your emotions as they come to life from the page.
The book tells ... ...immortality and godship by their ability to manipulate the power of sacred crystals. However, when a freak ice age tears their empire apart, it is only a matter of time before their enemies capitalise on their loses, and the mighty empire falls. Five key characters emerge, and Gemmell builds each one into the full three dimensions a character needs to be believable, and then goes beyond to create a real sense of pathos between you and the last heroes ...

Advantages: some great new ideas Disadvantages: It is over too soon
David Gemmell has once again pulled out of his imagination and a vast amount of research a world of heroes and men. The greyness between right and wrong are again stretched and explored; a continuum between magic and religion is examined - presenting another excellent story. Full of new ideas, original characters and an excellent set of plots. This book should be read by all Gemmell fans and serves as a great introduction for his new fans. I have ...

I love Gemmell's books. It's as simple as that.
This one is one of my all time fav's, it is a stand alone story of a race of technologically advanced people who manage to survive the cataclysmic "fall of the world" by that David means change in orbital rotation leading to the seas rising up and swamping the land.
So the Avatars (a few hundred?) manage to make a new home in the north of the planet, they manage to subjugate the locals (Vagars) with ... ...from the race they subdue) they are facing an uprising and are in a tough spot.
In an attempt to recharge the weapons they have one of their top scientist goes to the ice caps above their old capital. They manage to get some power from the source below, but a volcanic eruption puts an end to possible future trips.
A great character in this book is Viruk a crazed killer who hears voices telling him to kill and know joy. I think he is great, totally ...
