Advantages Advantages Bi-wireable; punchy bass; clear treble; good power handling

Disadvantages Disadvantages Spikes can't be removed; possibly not the most reliable

Eltax are what I would call a mid-range loudspeaker manufacturer. The Monitor IIIs have an RRP of £129, but can be found for as little as £60. They're available in either black or beech, complementing any decor scheme. On the technical side, these speakers are pretty well specified. They claim RMS power handling of 90W at 8 ohms impedance; they are equipped with bi-wiring terminals (which means that you can run two sets of wires to your amplifier, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter on each speaker; this improves bass); they come with a five star rating from What Hi-Fi?. They are best ... more

Advantages Advantages Very Cheap, good sound, look fine

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can look a little cheap, eltax name, expensive to upgrade!

As a poor student needing to build a small, but reasonably competent hifi system on a tight budget I had low hopes for the Eltax Monitor IIIs that I purchased. After all, despite winning a 5 star what -hifi award, what can you expect from speakers you pick up for £60 from good old Richer sounds. I got 'em home and set them up - first impressions good. They look reasonably smart in the light beech finish, silver details blending well into the overall effect - how can they do it for the money. By compromising on the sound quality...? Once connected up... they sounded distinctly average. But then ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap as chips, original design

Disadvantages Disadvantages Weak with high end equipment, loose bass

I recently found myself without a pair of loudspeakers and very little money. I decided to buy the Eltax Monitor 3's as a stop gap until I could buy something more expeensive. I use them with my Sony AV amplifier that I picked up from Richer Sounds for a mere one hundred pounds (another fantastic bargain). When I wired them up and fired them up with the haunting vocals of Lisa Gerrard I was amazed to hear how dynamic her voice was and how wide the soundstage was. I then moved on to the Chemical Brothers classic album Exit Planet Dust and was again stunned by the ease with which the little ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and produce great quality sound

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dont buy if you have a very powerfull amp.

I recently purchased these speakers for £50 at richer sounds when i traded in my complete system to buy cambridge audio seperates. These speakers have awsome sound quality this is mainly due to the bi-wiring terminals which means that you can run two sets of wires to your amplifier if it is also bi-wireable, one for the woofer and one for the tweeter on each speaker this means that the quality of sound is maintained and there is little distortion, They also have a down firing speaker and produce exellent bass with out losing any higher pitch. They have RMS power handling of 90W at 8 ohms ... more
