    The great irony of the ECBs increasing moves to reduce the number of South Africans in the domestic English game so to help young English players come through has seen the ECB increasingly pick players born in South Africa to play for England, Trot the latest, a guy who played all his cricket in his native Western province, only his English mom the connection. With 15 South African born guys lining up in Pretoria for the first test on the England tour this winter I certainly think we are going too far by selecting Trott.     You know it's been a dry year for British sport when some of the top bets for the Sports Personality of the Year consist of a man who won his first grand prix at the seven thousandth attempt and a comedian who swam the channel for charity.     ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AUGUST 2000 LIFE AS AN ENGLAND SUPPORTER I first started watching England on TV in 1970 at the age of 8. In those days the BBC1 commentators were Jim Laker and Richie Benaud. Peter West introduced each test session. 1970 England was due to play South Africa but this tour was cancelled due to the sports wide ban due to South Africa’s apartheid policies.     Anyone who is anyone knows that there is a vital cricket match today (2nd March 2003). England need to beat Australia to have any real chance of progressing in the Cricket World Cup. In order to raise the spirits of the nation, I thought I would write a review about my greatest sporting moment. I love the game of cricket.     Disadvantages Disadvantages one day side is pathetic, batting can collapse, no world class spinner

    To all the moaning English cricket supporters after our Ashes defeat - stop being so blinkered. Everybody is forgetting that we won in completely alien conditions in Pakistan AND Sri Lanka in winter. Now lots of people are slating the lads because our injury ravaged side has been outplayed by one of the best test sides ever. But now England have got some revenge. 5-0? never. We were without our inspirational captain for most of the first 3 tests, but Australia are now without theirs, and look what happens, we win.     When current England coach Duncan Fletcher and Captain Nasser Hussain assumed control of the England Cricket team in 1999 after a pathetic and embarresing, painful defeat by New Zealand, England were the lowest ranked International Cricket team in World Cricket - in other words you couldn't get any lower. In the three years since, despite the odd memorable collapse, England have been climbing and climbing up the rankings.     There's a lot of talk about how bad england are at the moment with them being 3-0 down in the Ashes series (and in a fight to save the fourth as we speak) and as always happens in British sport, people are asking for heads to roll and new players to be bought in.     What a difference six months makes! Over the winter we were acclaiming the new found English heroes of our cricket side as they ruthlessly despatched all comers with an almost casual indifference.
