Advantages Advantages A well balanced team in all departments

Disadvantages Disadvantages Maybe a weaker 5th bowling option than is preferable

After another poor batting performacnce by the one day team, I expect we will see the usual wholsesale changes made after some players fail. I would have thought that by now the selectors would have learnt that chopping and changing the team doesn't turn results around, They were doing the same with the test team for years and then they finally decided to get a settled team together i.e. the central contracts of which the test team mainly consists of and look at the results of the test team since this happened, so, surely someone must have realised that the same needs to be done with the one ... more

Advantages Advantages England won! Afzaal looked good, for bringing in young players, and Butcher in the second innings was amazing. Vast improvement on England's last few tests.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Australia are still a big threat, and will not be content with 3 wins, they want it all.

England have already lost the Ashes to Australia, and now looking to desperately avoid a 5-0 whitewash in the series. Having lost the first three tests easily, England could only get better, while Australia seem unstoppable, outclassing their opponents in every department. Will this fourth test at Headingly, Leeds be any different? Read on for my match report and comments on the teams. The Teams England: England make a few forced and unforced changes, a factor that could have been a costly factor in their downfall, that no-one is sure of their place, and having to get used to new batting and ... more

Advantages Advantages Starting to Win Again

Disadvantages Disadvantages Another possible false dawn

In England's current test series against the West Indies in the caribbean, England are doing to the West Indies what the great West Indian sides of the past used to do to England ..... totally anhilate them. Through a strong team ethic, ruthless professionalism and up and coming fast bowlers, England have so far completely outplayed the West Indies in the first two tests of the four match series, does this mean that England are becoming a force in Test cricket capable of competing and perhaps beating the very best in the world or is this present series just easy pickings against a poor West ... more

Advantages Advantages great captain + coach ; talented players

    Disadvantages Disadvantages inexperienced

Shortly before the Ashes series last summer, there was talk of England being serious contenders, having lost for so many years. Strangely enough, England were given a bigger beating than they had been given for a long time! The England team were completely outclassed and had it not been for the heroics for Mark Butcher in the 5th and final Test, they would have been whitewashed. So what really went wrong? Having looked a completely different outfit in the run-up to the Ashes why did things go so disastrously wrong? The way the English team fought off the might of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, I ... more

Advantages Advantages One of the finest batsmen to play for England

Disadvantages Disadvantages Career at an end

Looking back on the last decade of English cricket there is very little to be proud of. However, one of the few consolations to the English cricket fan has been the service Michael Atherton has given to the international game. After captaining Manchester Grammar School for 3 years and playing for Lancashire since 1987, he made is test debut in 1989, a few months after leaving Cambridge. Since then he has been the mainstay of the England batting line up his position at the top of the innings jeopardised only by injury. His test record stands him as statistically one of the greatest test players ... more

Advantages Advantages Some decent enough players

Disadvantages Disadvantages TOO Inconsistent, TOO much of a bad losers mentality

Having just been annihilated by the Aussies, by an embarrassing margin of an innings and 118 runs, I have to make my comment on the current England team, I mean come on, are we really this bad or is it just an attitude problem, that seems to blight our sports teams in everything. The team: England have one or two very talented cricketers, both in the bowling and batting department, but we just never seem to have a team full of International class players, be it through poor selection or injuries. The selection side of things seems to be pathetic, with a constant swapping around of the team or ... more

Advantages Advantages We have plenty of brilliant young cricketers

Disadvantages Disadvantages We don't know how to nurture their skills

To all avid England and Wales cricket fans. I think I know the weak link in England’s bid to produce a national side that can compete with the great test sides around the world. This, I might add, is from personal experience. Not so many years ago I was a good cricketer with good future prospects. I made it through to two England Schools cricket trials. At the Under 16 level I hadn’t represented my county, and hence couldn’t represent my country. At the Under 18 level I didn’t play well in the trial and consequently I didn’t progress. Needless to say I played with ... more

    Advantages Advantages great stuff

Disadvantages Disadvantages oops no cricket for 3 days

Having watched the English bowlers skittle the windies this afternoon it has to said yesterdays doubts where very misplaced. It is great to see an English cricket side that goes out to win matches rather than avoid losing as we have seen all to often in the past. A great deal of praise has to go to nasser and especially duncan fletcher who if I'm not mistaken about his accent is an aussie. The team have developed an aussie mentality which is great to see and long may it continue. On the field the captain is thinking all the time probing for weaknesses and making life hard for the opposition ... more

    Advantages Advantages 7 batsman?

Disadvantages Disadvantages 2 many poor performers

The first day at headingly is drawing to a close and already it is clear this test will, weather permitting, have a result England need to survive the last few overs tonight and then the opening assault from curtley and courtney in the morning to have any hope of reaching the windies total then it will be a case of tight bowling to make sure that we stop them gaining a big lead. Caddick will have to be a bit luckier in the second innings but that seems to be fairly common for him so we shall keep our fingers crossed for a victory and a lead in the series. Much will rest on Hick tomorrow he ... more

Advantages Advantages Exciting to watch, can produce excellent cricket

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Inconsistency

It is of course wonderful to see England producing some decent cricket. However beating Zimbabwe in a Test and then in a One-Day Final is far from proof that the revival is complete. England will struggle to beat the Windies although I think they will manage it. What happens when we meet South Africa, Australia or dare I say it, one time no hopers, New Zealand. Hick, Ramprakash and the like must go. Too often they have been brought in because they are experienced players and too often they have let the side down. Let them stick to One Day Internationals. Bring in new blood, let them stay there ... more
