They make you play Rugby at school, which I think is a little nasty! Imagine the scene now. It's freezing cold, spitting with rain. I'm standing in the middle of a field, shivering in my shorts and T-shirt. Then someone throws the ball at me, I catch it and freeze. 15 people start charging at me, with the sole intent of hurting me. So what do I do? Run away like a coward, or stay and risk possible death? Nope, I just throw the ball to the next unsuspecting person on my team, and let them make that decision. Sooner or later though, someone was going to get caught out, and they would be ... more

Advantages Advantages Sensational 2nd Half Rugby

Disadvantages Disadvantages Complacency could cost dear

Mama Mia!I bet the Italians wished they'd got on their scooters at half time, made their way to the nearest coffee house and sank a few cappucinos. To steal a tired cliche from another well-known sport this was certainly a game of 2 halves. The first half was a lacklustre, tetchy affair and England were lucky to go in at the interval 10 points to the good. But in the second half they were a simply awesome attacking force as the Italians capitulated under immense English pressure, conceding a massive 47 points without reply. A criticism often levelled at England is that when they get ahead in a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Best team ever

    Disadvantages Disadvantages May choke

From hero to...erm...hero in the space of 24 hours. Having scored the try that secured England’s victory over a stubborn Springbok team, Will Greenwood flies home to be with his wife. With a difficult birth ensuing, the England man has proved that family does come above sport in stark contrast to Nasser Hussein taking his pregnant partner on the cricketer’s tour of Oz. I thought that this was a nice finish to an excellent weekend for the national team. In retrospect, the previous encounter at Twickenham had proved a false comparison, what with the barbarous tactics of the Boks that day ... more

Advantages Advantages Good Strong Base, WORLD CHAMPIONS!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages No Johnson, Negative Image, Injury List

So there it was. As the ball sailed through the posts on that wet Australian night in November, we all knew what had just happened, as did Jonny Wilkinson and Will Greenwood as they leapt in the air and hugged each other....England were World Champions, the last few seconds didn't matter, England could hold out. I remember the feeling as everyone at my rugby club went mad, first at the sight of the drop goal, then the final whistle and then as Englands greatest captain lifted the Webb Ellis Trophy above his head, pure elation! Looking back on that night now though it needs to be looked at in ... more

Advantages Advantages Officially the worlds best when we beat Australia on Saturday

Disadvantages Disadvantages Got to do it when it counts

There is nothing more I like than watching England beat New Zealand but lets be honest it wasnt the most convincing performance ever. 31-28 against a weakened New Zealand at home is nothing to shout about. A win is a win fair enough but will there be the same result in Australia in the world cup? Not if we dont get better it wont. Look at the facts of the recent match. New Zealand missed two fairly simple penalties at goal. They looked sharper and more direct in attack. Apart from a few punishing runs from Woodman who had an excellent game, we seemed to be going no where fast on first and ... more

Advantages Advantages Great team, excellent squad, my fave player (Jason Robinson) and a whole lot more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Need to keep a cool head, and get the basics right

Now i love a nice bit of rugger action, and there nothing better than seeing England giving someone a good stuffing. Sports wise us English probably have more success in rugby (well recently). We are the main contenders for the six nations all the time, and we certainly are with out a doubt the best Northern Hemisphere team out there. We can beat France, Italy, Scotland (always a tough match), Ireland you name it, we can beat it on our good day. But then you get the three side who England can only beat on a really good day (New Zealand, Australia and South Africa). This doesn't mean to say ... more

Advantages Advantages A strong squad with great morale

Disadvantages Disadvantages When missing the odd key player, they can be weakened

I watched the recent series with home games against Australia, Argentina and South Africa. Three Southern Hemisphere squads. Three of the best squads in the world...and how many of the games did England win? All three! I was feeling a bit down when the Australian game was on. That very morning, my long-time girlfriend had split up with me and I really didn't fancy doing anything but veg out in front of the TV. My mood altered slightly by the end of this game though, when Dan Luger's outstretched hand pulled down the cleverly hefted through ball from Iain Balshaw! The game had been close ... more

The current England team are clearly worthy or secondary status falling behind the Australians and the All Blacks. If we were to adopt some of their training strategies then maybe we could be in the same league. This coming seasons matches should prove very interesting, where we probabaly have parity in the forwards and need to be somewhat more dynamic in our three quarter play we can only hope that with the introudcution of Horran, Little, and Castiegnade? in the premiership will help the likes of Perry, Wilkenson and others to show their full potential. ... more

I was surprised to read that most contributors to this page are claiming that England are 'suddenly' considered to be gaining on the Southern Hemisphere. I have witnessed their rise for the last couple years; hardly sudden. Admittedly we were still being defeated, but the games were always very close, and all too frequently came down to the superior experience in these close games from the SH teams than a massive skill difference. I believe we are gaining the experience and confidence to raise our games in these situations, as the big 3 traditionally do. England has always played an attractive ... more

Over the course of last season i watched many games of rugby, from internationals down to the Jewson leagues. I thougholy enjoiyed the quality of rugby played by many teams from the southern hemisphere, as i'm sure did many others, but what pleased me more was the quality of rugby i witnessed back home in England. What it was that impressed me was the quality of rugby played by youngsters in such established teams. The likes of Steve Hanley and Ian Balshaw, not to mention Joe Worsley and many, many more. These players are still young and can improve there skills even more if the oppurtunity is ... more
