5 Stars The Perfect Scan! Review with images 23/07/2004

Advantages Advantages Good quality, Low price, V.Easy install

Disadvantages Disadvantages Occasional freezing of software if scanner program left inactive

After months of struggle with my Manager and IT department, I was finally allowed to upgrade my standard company PC, to a faster model with more memory, better processor, and larger hard drive capacity. Due to this, I also upgraded my Operating System to Windows XP, from Windows NT4 and as a result my current scanner, a HP1200s was made redundant as it was not compatible with Windows XP, nor could a driver update be found by Hewlett Packard to allow it to run. Therefore I had free reign to purchase a new scanner using the company's purchasing department. *Choosing a Scanner* To ensure approval ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and does a good job

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the greatest of scan quality

When my Dad bought my Epson printer about nine months ago, he was very impressed. He decided that we, or I, needed a scanner. We have bought all of our printers from Epson so we respect them as a very good computer products manufacturer. I don't really use my scanner, in fact I have never used this scanner. I can't think of a reason for using one either so it will just sit next to the printer un-used. I thought I would give it a spin this evening so I could give it a fair and unbiased review. I decided to scan an image from todays Daily Telegraph newspaper. Before I start the review, I would ... more

Advantages Advantages Fast, Compact, Excellent Quality scans, Scans Negs and Slides

Disadvantages Disadvantages Control Interface, Looks like it should, but does not make toasted sandwiches

Yes I know that the 1670 has been discontinued, but it does not mean that you shouldn't grab one of these scanners if you see one. This was an IMPULSE purchase. Last week (Oct 2005) Jessops in Harrow had one of these BRAND NEW for £29.97. A friend of mine has one of these and the scan quality is excellent and the drivers and software are pretty decent too. She paid over £75 for hers..... It is true that the later scanners are higher resolution (dpi), but so what??? idefy almost anyone to tell the difference on even relatively critical work. Higher resolution is theoretically better, but in ... more

Advantages Advantages Fast, great colour reproduction, easy to use

Disadvantages Disadvantages no negative holder, outdated

Unless you are specifically going to scan a large number of good quality negatives (if you are digitising your entire film based photo collection for example) then this scanner is brilliant. It doesn't have a negative holder, and it doesn't have the highest resolution on the market, but unless you are working with negatives or slides, it simply doesn't matter. The scanner has a maximum optical resoltion of 1600x1600dpi. You will never need to go anywhere near this high, as the files this type of resolution produce are enormous. For scanning of photos, documents, or anything else, this scanner ... more

Advantages Advantages Crisp, clear, high resolution - what more do you need?

Disadvantages Disadvantages Colour balance slightly off

After setting up, which is a simple affair, this scanner presents a simple interface that belies great power. With one press of a button, the scanner brings up its software onscreen, allowing you to choose from a number of simple options, from scanning and saving images to the (occasionally useful and very powerful) Optical Character Recognition package. It will even identify the type of document in the flatbed and adjust its resolution etc. accordingly. This can be annoying, though, as it restricts your control over what the scanner does. However, coupling this scanner with, say, Adobe ... more

Advantages Advantages Able to scan photos, documents, slides and film negatives

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can only scan 2 slides at a time

This scanner is very easy to use, with the software that comes with this Epson 1670 you can scan an image and email it to friends or relatives, also at the click of a button you can even publish an image to the web. This particular model comes with a 35mm Transparency Adapter allowing you to scan not only photos and documents but also two slides or transparencies as they are also known at the same time. You can also use this adapter to scan film negatives, which you can then either print out or save for future editing using the software included. The advantage of this flat bed scanner over ... more
