Advantages Advantages Introduction to wit and Weatherwaxes

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor supporting cast, open ending

Eskarina Smith was supposed to be the eighth son of an eighth son. This would have made her a wizard. Unfortunately, due to her father's stubbornness and considerable confusion at her birth she still received the wizard’s staff of power. Does that make her a wizard? Well, we all know women can't be wizards don't we? The third novel in the Discworld series this serves an introduction to witches and wizards and reads somewhat like a "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" tale. Centring on Eskarina's attempts to decide whether she wants to be witch or wizard and whether she will be allowed to ... more

    Advantages Advantages good characters, interesting

Disadvantages Disadvantages not as good as some of his other novels

My Pratchett phase continues. The latest book I’ve finished is Equal Rites – the third Discworld novel and the first foray into the chronicles of the Witches. Perhaps unfortunately for me, I read Carpe Jugulum beforehand – a Pratchett book which is brilliant in every way – so Equal Rites had a lot to live up to and just didn’t manage it in my opinion. The story is about a young girl called Esk (short for Eskarina). She is a wizard. Well, kind of. She possesses special wizard powers and even owns a wizard’s staff. There’s just one slight problem, one ... more

Advantages Advantages Fun | Re-readable | Doesn't depend on having read previous books | Suitable for many ages

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as funny as later books

There's nothing I like better than to become engrossed in a good fantasy book, and the one of the very best sets of these fantasy books is the Discworld series. I remember the day I stood in the library looking for something new to read, when the cover of one of these books caught my eye, I picked the book up and started reading the first few pages (as you do) and found myself so engrossed that I found myself a seat and spent the next couple of hours finishing the story. That book was Equal Rites and now I'm going to share why this book still holds a special place in my heart…. Before I start ... more

Advantages Advantages It is an enjoyable read

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as good as the later Witches books

This is the third book in the Discworld series, the Discworld is, as its name suggests a flat disk. An idea thought up by the creator when he was in a more imaginative mood than usual. The disc is carried on the back of four elephants that stand on the back of an astrochelonian (giant space turtle to you and me:). It has a strong magical field which holds it together and as a result of this it has many strange features and odd inhabitants, though the oddest inhabitants have to be the wizards. This book begins when a wizard starts getting sloppy about checking the sex of his successor, which ... more

THE STORY: ESKARINA is the eighth son of a eighth son and as we know eight is a very magical number on the discworld, when her farther started to pass away (hes a very powerful wizard), he gave his staff of power to his new born baby (this is our ESKARINA) how ever the old fool didnt check what sex the new born was (let me tell you it wasnt male), and in the discworld we all know that females cant be wizards (hence the title equal rites). Thats the beginning sorted right the next part of the story is the fact that our GRANNY WEATHERWAX helping our young navie ESKARINA, so that she can get into ... more

    Advantages Advantages Funny, light reading...

Disadvantages Disadvantages ... lacks the brilliance of later Discworld books.

Equal Rites is the third in the Discworld series of books. At the beginning an old wizard, who knows he has only a few minutes to live, journeys to a remote village with a silly name in order to pass on his staff to a deserving recipient. He knows that an eighth son of an eighth son has been born, and these are traditionally sorcerers. Off he goes then, looked at with interest by the many goats in the region, and the blacksmith's cat. He tells the blacksmith that his eighth son, just born, will become a wizard and passes on his staff to him, and promptly dies. All is right with the world ... more

Advantages Advantages Puns, you can feel Pratchett enjoyed writing it

Disadvantages Disadvantages I kinda missed Nanny Ogg and Magrat

Eskarina Smith received an unusual gift at her birth, the staff of an old, dying wizard. He was under the impression she was the eighth son of an eighth son. She may have the right equipment to be a wizard now, but she hasn't got the equipment to be a son. Esk grows up in Bad Ass, in the Ramtop mountains of the Discworld. Granny Weatherwax , the local witch, hides the staff from her, until one day when the wizard magic fills her and even Granny Weatherwax cannot deny it any longer. Everybody knows that women cannot be wizards, stands to reason doesn't it? Women are witches; concerned with ... more

Equal rights is the third book in a series of 36.Its about several different stories taking place on you guessed it a disk world. The books I have read so far in the series including this one have been full of humour which I have been looking for a series like this for a long time that mixes humour and science fiction/Fantasy. My only problem is that some of the bits of story get a bit mathematical for me. Background The disk world rests on crater in the middle of a giant turtle named Great a Train. The book features witches and wizards. In this book there is something similar to Hogwarts ... more

    Advantages Advantages Lifelike, humourful, magical.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Overpopular genre, self conciously funny.

Equal Rites. The third book in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. An entity unto itself, a fresh complete story following on from the first two books which dealt mainly with Rincewind the failing wizard. (Not forgetting Twoflower and the trunk made from Sapient Pearwood.) A wizard called Drum Billet visits, in his dying moments, what he thinks is the predestined birth of an eighth son to an eighth son. He carries the staff of wizardry to pass on and the moment arrives when the new born is brought to him in the arms of the witch Granny Weatherwax. Before anything can be changed it transpires ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to read and lighthearted comedy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't fit perfectly with the other books and has a bit of a confusing plot

This is the first book in which Granny Weatherwax appears and the third book in Terry's discworld series. In this book terry develops the backround of the magical side of his books a bit further and expands the world and starts to set the groundwork which he later relates back too. Again in this book many of his characters are underdeveloped but still very funny and their personalities come across well. The book can be read as one of a series or as a stand alone book with no problems. It is not one of my favorite books and it is not one i woudl recomend to someone as a first Discworld book ... more
