Advantages Advantages A whole range of wines under a single banner. Some are superb, others so-so

Disadvantages Disadvantages You really need to know what you are buying

Let me be quite dogmatic in my opening remarks. There is no such thing as Ernest & Gallo Cabernet Sauvignon. Rather, the American vintners – E&J Gallo – produce a whole range of wines under a variety of labels from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. I have more to say about these varieties later, but it is of fundamental importance to understand the differences AND to be clear about what it is you are drinking before you can appreciate any given bottle. The subject of this review is E&J Gallo “Coastal Vineyards” Cabernet Sauvignon 1999. In the past I have had bottles of other “Cabs” from their ... more

Ernest & Julio Gallo Californian Cabernet Sauvignon 2000 750ml bottle 13.5 % alc.vol Imported by J Gallio Winery Europe in Middlesex. NOW 3.99 in Tesco's buy six bottles get 5% off. The Facts Ok guys, reach for the wine glass it is now known that red wine (when drunk in moderation) is good for you. Consider the French, they have the highest amount of fat in their diet than almost any other country, eat more beef, cheese, etc yet they have the lowest rate of heart disease, why? it is considered that the regular amount of red wine consumed to be the main factor. There are a number of health ... more

Advantages Advantages Fruity. Nice Bottle. Nice Flavour

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Very Few

These days the " Sunshine State" of California produces a very wide range of wines including the likes of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its very benign climate, accommodating soils, and favorable aspects together combine to make the US state a natural home for the vine. One of the major reasons why California produces such a huge variety of wines is because it enjoys so many different climates and micro climates. Some areas are cool as regions in Europe such as the Rhine,Burgundy or Champagne;others are as warm as the likes of Spain, Portugal,Italy and the Rhone Valley. So today California produces big ... more

    Advantages Advantages Smooth and tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Gets you rather drunk!

Ernest and Julio Gallo has to be my favourite brand of wine. I prefer red to white and they always seem to make the average grape taste better. I'm a big fan of Cabernet Sauvignon, it is very subtle in it's taste, not too dry with a slightly fruity edge to it. After drinking a glass you don't get that all to familiar carpet like feeling in your mouth! The smell of this red wine is slightly sweet not at all vinegar like and very appealing. The bottle, is green glass(of course) and the labels have been re-vamped. They are a lot plainer than they used to be with what looks like a piece of art ... more

    Advantages Advantages easy to drink

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not enough bite

I stareted to drink this wine a few years ago as I thought it to be a reputable brand name and had a classy image. Althought the quality is always of a good standard I have found the overall taste of the wine to be somewhat disappointing, lacking bite and a bit of fire, in other words I think they have neutralized the taste to please their drinkers. The packaging is good and appealing, the labels are always wellpresented, so I think they are fooling buyers a little and I think it is overpriced these days compared to other good tasting wines on the market and somewhat losing its brand image of ... more
