Advantages: Easy access to useful information and entertaining Disadvantages: Heavy for backpackers (easily overcome) and not as big a range as some might wish for
To say that Europe on a Shoestring has been my Bible for the past three weeks would be an overstatement, but it was certainly very helpful and I would recommend it for any young first-time traveller. It is a comprehensive and amusing guide which makes it not only essential but also entertaining to read (particularly on long train journeys between cities). Although now a little out of date, it provides important information on emergency numbers, exchange ... ...giving short, helpful reviews on various attractions, restaurants, clubs and the like. However, it may not be the right thing for those looking for places further off the beaten track, and it is a little heavy (although this can be overcome by following the example of a New Zealander we met in a hostel who had cut out the pages of the places he had visited). Overall a very useful guide :) ...

Advantages: Everything! Disadvantages: Very heavy if you're planning to travel with it in your backpack

Europe on a Shoestring is written by various travel authors, all of whom have either lived or frequently visited their country of choice. Each chapter contains information about the general background of the country, with a brief history. It often goes into quite detail about the culture of the country too, and a recommended daily budget. There is then a section for each major city or region too. The book contains ... ...overnight train routes in Eastern Europe which are targeted by thiefs are highlighted to keep you safe. Many of the major cities such as Rome and Berlin are very expensive to eat or drink, but the guide has a full list of restaurants and bars to suit all budgets and diets. Being a vegetarian, this was especially helpful as many countries such as Slovakia don't cater very well for a meat free diet, unless you find a McDonalds and settle for fries!
