Advantages Advantages rewarding, benefits you and others if you get it right, confidence

Disadvantages Disadvantages hard work, time and effort

I am writing this review in a variety of contexts. Primarily it is in the context of a secondary school as I am currently on my final teaching placement in a school where behaviour is extremely challenging with many pupils having severe behavioural disorders. However, I have also spend quite a few years running a childrens holiday club where over half of our children also demonstrated extreme negative behaviour. Therefore I have collated my key strategies and given examples based on my experience and suggested ways of dealing with situations. Positive expectations Going into a school that is ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

Disadvantages Disadvantages A disaster that could have been avoided.

A is for Aberfan. ----------------------------- A Heart rendering Disaster in Welsh History. I have decided to dedicate this review to the memories of the 144 people who lost there lives in the tragedy that hit the small mining community of Aberfan 40 years ago today. I feel it only right to write a review on this sad story so that we can all take the time to remember how lucky we all are and that we should always remember those who lost there lives through this avoidable disaster. It all happened 40 years ago on the 21st October 1966, just before the children were due to break up for there ... more

Advantages Advantages If you bored, this is a long read !!!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages It's long....

    * Apologies in advance, but this ended up getting quite LONG and some people may be bored to tears. I take no enjoyment from making you cry, unless of course it's with laughter! However, if that's the case, it probably wasn't intentional * The latest in a long line of challenges, but this is a good one because of the engagement of and reliance upon other Ciao members within and for the challenge. The brain child of DempseyReview (Dempsey Devil, who I have now christened Double D … simply because I have a very silly sense of humour and it's rude-ish! Tehehe). The challenge is to ask some other ... more

Advantages Advantages Makes you realise just how well off we are nowadays

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shows how old I am getting

This is the story of my life mainly in the 40's. Hope you find it interesting. -------------- I was born January 1940 when the Second World War was in its' infancy. My father missed this "wonderful" event, he was in the army getting ready to fight for us all. We lived in the second of four terraced houses, with my Grandmother. Swains Road led off of London Road, right on the South London/Surrey boarder. It was a long, narrow road with high walled back gardens on either side. We were right at the very end down a wide un-made-up alleyway called Swains Lane. There was only one gas light half-way ... more

    Advantages Advantages Makes life easier

Disadvantages Disadvantages Costs you a lot more

"Added Value" is a marketing term used in the food industry - it is the way the supermarket giants manage to get YOU to part with more and more of your hard earned cash each week. You might of course be misled into believing the person getting the added value is you - you would be wrong! That added value all goes towards additional profits for these companies at your expense. I am not saying of course that "Added Value" is necessarily a bad thing, in some ways it has made our lives easier. But I do believe it is in our best interests to know how the whole thing works so that we can made ... more

Advantages Advantages The most beautiful babies in the world.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not to be entered into lightly.

Brief history ************** Miss Pollington Smythe, whose kennel name is 'She's a Treasure at Mayclair' or 'Polly' as we at home know and love her is a West Highland white terrier or 'Westie' as they are more popularly known. She is a three-year-old bitch and the light of my life. As you can see she has three names, her kennel or show name, baring my kennel club registered affix, Mayclair, her pet name 'Polly' and of course her posh name. This is only used when she has done something extra specially good or something extra specially bad. Thank goodness the latter is a rare occasion. I have ... more

Advantages Advantages Can help sometimes, quick emergency relief, 3rd world countries not forgotten

Disadvantages Disadvantages Developing countries end up worse off, vicious circle

Over the past three weeks, I have been studying the topic of "Aid" at school, and I have found it incredibly enjoyable, and I have really thrown myself into learning about it! **WHAT IS AID? ** Aid, simply means help. The help of developed countries, such as Britain, too developing countries such as Tanzania and Sudan through mostly means of money. There are many different types of aid; some are seen as "unfair aid" and some, are seen as "good aid". There are many different types of aid. On occasion, the best type of aid is emergency aid during disasters such as tsunami's, a famine, drought ... more

Advantages Advantages You might be happier

Disadvantages Disadvantages You will be poorer (under one narrow definition of the word)

“The World is too much with us; late and soon Getting and spending we lay waste our powers; Little we see in Nature that is ours We have given our hearts away…..” To me it always seems that we in the west lost our way some time during the late twentieth century, somewhere between the optimism and joy of the sixties and early seventies and the tyranny of Thatcherism and the Yuppies in the eighties. Somewhere along that line where welfare economics transmuted into wealth generation, and technology was directed not at saving labour for mankind’s benefit in leisure, but ... more

Advantages Advantages Chance to discuss options, meet new mums

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Mine was unhelpful

One thing I was kind of looking forward to in my later pregnancy was the fact that I could meet some new mums-to-be around the area at antenatal classes. Sadly, my midwives didn't actually tell me anything about it until I was 34 weeks gone. I was lucky enough to be booked in on one in early August for two sessions - a Labour one and a Breastfeeding one. Personally, I didn't think two classes would be enough to help prepare new parents for the next 18 years of life but still, I happily went along to my first and was very suprised to find out I already knew everything they were teaching us ... more

I am a geek, plain and simple. I try to cover it up with sports, shopping and cooking, but underlying it all like a vein a granite through the ground, I am a geek. I have a chemistry degree from Leicester University, I work in the IT industry as a Technical Pre-sales Consultant and Microsoft Business Specialist (Yes, I work closely with the axis of evil; sorry), I read and enjoy Heroic Fantasy Fiction and have been known to play Magic The Gathering. Anyhow, this whole review came about having had a long guestbook discussion with a rather brilliant Ciao member about all kinds of things and ... more
