The premise is simple, yet effective: the characters of our beloved fairy tales (Snow White, the Frog Prince, and Pinocchio to name but a few) have fled the shadow of a vicious conqueror known as the Adversary, and set up home in New York. But, be assured, this is no children's story. Rather, it is a dark tour-de-force, with often surprising re-interpretation of popular tales and characters. Bill ... ...and inverting them to create something wondrous. How else would have the gall to turn the Prince Charming into a womanising cad, yet humanise the Big Bad Wolf so much that he becomes one of the true heroes of the series? It ought to crash and burn. But, instead, it gives the reader one of the best graphic novel series to date. From its subtle political nuances to the wonderfully-realised array of characters, it is a masterpiece.
