I was searching through a suitcase yesterday of photos and came across a folder. Inside, was a screwed up piece of paper. I read the words, and soon, it all fitted into place. It was a poem from my mother to my sister, who died aged twelve after being run-over. The poem is so awesome, I really wanted to share it with others. I never really knew that my mother was a poet, but this shows it. (Rhyme intended).
A thousand prayers won't bring you back
... ...I know because I've cried.
You left behind some broken hearts
Some wonderful memories too, but I never
Wanted memories, Mel
I only wanted you.
Our heart still aches with sadness, and silent tears still flow
What it meant to lose you Mel, no-one will ever know
But of all the lovings thing's in life
However great or small.
To have a daughter like you, was the greatest gift of all.
I look at the clock at twenty-past-four
Wishing you would ...

...I can do this for family members, but nothing can compare with seeing your own name in print, especially since the poem meant so much to me. This is a small British company called Dogma Publications and only offer a small amount of prize money. The idea is to help new poets to become better known and I feel they are a very genuine company. The British Press have spoken highly of this company that promotes new poets, I, for one, feel they achieve ...

MY CHILDREN
My children, my purpose
My heart and my soul
My gift from the heavens
Forever betrothed
Explore and discover
Within boundaries safe
Be what you believe in
Have courage and faith
Listen to guidance
But trust in yourself
Deeds not words matter
Your will is your wealth
With strength, independence
And confidence too
Go forth and enjoy
A life that suits you
My children, my purpose
With infinite worth
From body and mind
... ...my womb protected you
my milk made you strong
with love I nurture you
teach you right from wrong
each day I am so proud of you
as I watch you grow
with praise and encouragement
I let my love show
your eyes make my heart melt
your smile brings me joy
I love you more than anything
you're my 'BIG' little boy!

The pair of you together,
Were trouble from the start,
The twins of various mischief,
You never were apart.
If one was sad the other too,
And both of you would cry,
If one set fire to the rug,
The other watched it fry.
I remember when you came to stay,
And shaved the poor old cat,
You said he'd needed sorting,
Cause he'd looked just like a prat.
The laughs we had when dear old gran,
Was sleeping in her chair,
And you two gave her face ... ...times have gone,
Replaced by eerie sadness,
The evil loss of someone great,
Can drive some folk to madness.
But never mind the crazy days,
For buried in my soul,
Live memories that I can keep,
And choose to re-unfold.
I watched you fall, I saw it happen,
And never did I reason,
That suddenly your heart had stopped,
An organ with such treason.
And now although the winter's set,
We may as yet unthaw,
If only we could stick together,

...Ours not the perfect family in the land,
We trudged along like a motley band,
Growing older,and wiser perhaps,
Forever studying destiny's maps.
Then the day we hear the first fateful event,
The death of father brings a woeful lament,
A few years later and mother follows on,
We now drift aimlessly ,sorrowfully along,
But no there seems to be no end of pain,
A brother and a sister are lost in vain.
Two parents and seven children together,
... ...Alas there is but one left now,
Just one to remember how,
The happy band of a large family,
Have all gone, and just left me.
I feel so alone, so lost , so weak,
I have many thoughts, none to speak,
I am the last, the remaining child,
I stand by myself a man beguiled,
With all the knowledge we wonder how,
To find them, where are they now. ...

Advantages: something I need to say Disadvantages: it will hurt like hell
...your death we drifted,
the family fell apart,
I could not do as you had done,
I did not have the heart.
Two sisters and two brothers.
most live far away,
they get on with their own lives
but I am here to stay.
I allways was the one to care,
to look after you and dad,
I find it hard to let you go,
my heart is still too sad.
My memories as so special,
you both were to me my life,
I remember all you problems,
the worry and the strife.
... ...in your care,
whenever I was sad or troubled,
you allways would be there.
Of all the granchildren you had,
my daughter you loved the best,
So I know you would not be unhappy,
if my daughter was my guest.
Anniversaries seem the right time, to visit you and say,
I miss you both and love you, I need you both today.
To me there are no right times,
to see you both, I guess,
Go with my heart and tell you,
Goodnight to you, God bless.
In memory ...

Advantages: My beautiful niece! Disadvantages: None!
I was fortunate to become an Auntie this year for the first time on my side of the family. I’m really quite surprised by how overwhelmed and unconditionally I’ve come to love my niece. She’s special for a number of reasons not least of which, her parents tried for over five years to conceive, and she’s the first child, niece and grandchild on both sides of her parental families. I wanted to write something that could perhaps convey how much I love ... ...I hope you find it enjoyable. A LITTLE GIRL I KNOW …
There is a little girl I know
Shona Megan is her name, a name that is for show
But she has another name you see, one given from love and care
She’s everyone’s “little angel”, she’s beautiful and she’s fair
This child is a gift, a gift of true love
Delivered from heaven, from Him up above
She’s loved unconditionally, and so deserves to be
Like any newborn child, she’s innocent you see
Her ...

It's the small hours here at work where I sit
Those quiet hours between the dark and the dawn
In my troubled mind, the pieces don't quite fit
The fabric of my life seems to always have been torn
*****
Minutes ago I was in the car with my brother
Driving with the sounds up to our house on the Point
Our voices flowing over me like fresh spring water
We harmonize so naturally like a ball within a joint
*****
Yet again it made me wonder things ... ...become my dearest friends
Somehow they have always known me and I guess that's what its for
I need that look of understanding, and the message that it sends
*****
But its more than that and strangely I can't say exactly why
I understand our bond is special and unique in its own way
I'm certain that the troubles of our youth helped us to bond
But it strikes me that its grown, bigger, stronger, here to stay
*****
Still my mind is wandering ...

Advantages: Erm............let me get back to you on that one. Disadvantages: Dreadful rhymes.
Paul (aka marandina aka an_enigmatic_brummie (if such a thing exists?) ) set me a small challenge. A head to head poetry contest with Christmas as the theme.
Now after reading his.....how can I say this?....laughable excuse for a Christmas poem! I felt compelled to write one as quickly as possible.
As for the competition? I think I have proved who is the real talent betwixt us.................don't you? :-P

“I cannat go on!”
He cried to the moon
“I’ve gone and killed Santa
And Christmas is soon
The kids will all hate me
I’ve no where to go
And now just to top it
It’s started to snow!”
I sat down beside him
And asked him to tell
Why he’d killed Santa
And risked going to hell
He looked in my eyes
With a sorrow so cold
And here ...

Days Gone By
Cast your mind back
to the places you used to go,
remember all those summers
where the sun always seemed to show
Where youthful playful pastimes
passed endless sunny days
and cherry blossom fragrances
filled the morning summer haze
Where apple trees and strawberries
grew in orchards north and south
and the latest hottest picnic spots
were passed by word of mouth
Where the clear stream meandered
thru’ lush undergrowth and ... ...breeze
Now the stream is stagnant
and the undergrowth not quite so green
and the birds although still singing
are few and far between
And where once there were orchards
now buildings stalk the glade
and the apples and the strawberries
are imported from Belgrade
And the summer days no longer
are filled with sun and song
they seem so much shorter
and sometimes need a help along
Maybe it’s just me
and the years have passed me by
but ...

The first flakes to fall on winters ground
The first snow of the year
was here to show my baby girl
would finally appear
So perfect with your big blue eyes
Your cry was even cute
so vunerable and full of love
there in your birthday suit
I love it when you smile at me
" I did that mom look"
I'd like to tell you off but can't
You've ripped my favourite book
So full of michief, full of hope
So innocent and sweet
It wasn't until I met you
... ...up at night
and yes I'm always broke
but I would have given all I owned
the day that you first spoke
I'm so proud of you my sweet
You're bright beyond your years
but I'll be here babe every day
to wipe away your tears
There will never be a love like ours
This is a lifetime bond
It's thanks to you my little girl
that mummy stays so strong
I'll keep you safe within my arms
just like an oysters pearl
and I'll be there forever more
Cause ...

There's an engine in my kitchen , dear , and oil upon my floor
A pair of mangled handlebars are blocking up the door
A wheel is sliding down the wall , dislodged by fighting kids
And greasy fingerprints are on my cupboards , jars and lids
A spanner in a patch of grease that's sitting in my sink
Has turned the draining board into a skiddy skating rink
A bike chain's draped across the back of my new kitchen chair
I keep on telling you , my dear ... ...cables ( once the brakes ) are snaking round my feet
Before you started this repair my kitchen was quite neat
The cat is playing with a nut that's fallen off somewhere
And little Suzie's running round with brake grease in her hair
The garage would be just the place to do this filthy job
But it's sky high with rubbish cos you're such a mucky slob
So now you've had to find a place to fix this darned machine
But all I ask is that you keep my ...

My Days
My days are simply islands
in the vast ocean we call life
and when the seas are tranquil
there’s no anxiety or strife
But ever now and then
when the forces do collide
life can be a bitch
and you feel the pain inside
It’s then you grab the oars
and paddle like the devil
struggle thru’ the grief
and get your ship back level
Gaze the far horizon
as another island comes to view
sail further on the ocean
prey the tides will stay ... ...by one
and sail freely on the ocean
till your voyages are done.
Wolf Whistle
As a humble guy I'd like to say
of the wolf whistle you threw away
Don't tar us all with the dirty brush
don't misconstrue a impulsive rush
We all of us need to feel of love
not molly coddled in a satin glove
And if some girl fulfils your dream
she doesn't have to be a queen
She doesn't have to make a pass
all she need do is wiggle her ass
The verbal tribute ...

The child within my heart still leaps, through ... ...I lost much more,
The family were blown apart by money and its sad,
Because that really isn’t want a family is for,
A family’s for sharing life, whether it be good or bad.
Now orphaned in my later years, I still remember youth,
With a passion and remembrance of the innocence it bore,
The bruises and the tumbles, and the chipped or broken tooth,
And the hand-down clothes, the mini skirts, and all the things we wore.
The trials and tribulations, ...
