FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD is perhaps the best-known of Hardy's works. The story centres around the beautiful and wilful Bathsheba Everdene, mistress of Weatherbury Upper Farm, and...
more...the three men who love her. Hardy combines outstanding description of West Country rural life with a deep sense of romantic passion.

Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by Marandina

Advantages: Fantastic Story, Classical work
Disadvantages: The language is a little staid at times

---Introduction--- It was on holiday in Scotland that I chose to read the bulk of this particular book. Whether it was the magnificent Highland scenery that inspired the read (albeit the rugged mountainous terrain would hardly substitute for the fictional lowlands of *Wessex) or the more than common flock of sheep that put me in mind of the characters, I'm not sure; but having spanned a gap of some 24 years since the first time I read the book, ... Wessex, Here I come!
Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by profilea2

Advantages: a romping good yarn
Disadvantages: some difficult language

...a woman and she is far from portrayed unsimpathetically. The remaining characters, of which there are the three suitors and then various country folk whose characters serve to flesh out the scenery and have been compared to the chorus in Greek Tragedy providing reflection and comment to the audince or reader that the main charachters do not see and are not aware of. It has been said that Hardye's charachters are obviously good or bad, a statement ... Read review

Escape to the idyllic Countryside
Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by MAFARRIMOND

Advantages: The desriptions of 19th century rural traditions
Disadvantages: Period drama

Far from the Madding Crowd is a nineteenth century realist novel by Thomas Hardy. It is set in a timeless and protected rural area in Wessex, England. Hardy has even provided a map detailing the halls, farms and countryside that appear in the book. The map is drawn around actual landmarks set on the River Frome. The descriptions of the landscape are idyllic (so idyllic that if it was real I am sure "hiker" would be writing about a walk set around ... Read review

one word... boring
Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by dancingqueen_1993

Advantages: zzzzzzzzzz
Disadvantages: lots

I HATE this book. In my opinion it's the worst book I have ever read. Others may disagree about it. For example my mums work mate loves it :s. I have read it in this in English in September ad I am glad its over. The book is very complexed and confusing. You have to be a complete genius to understand what Thomas Hardy is babbling on about. (He is the writer.) This book is known as a classic and I don't like these type of books. I usually go for ... Read review

A tale of love, deception and murder.
Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by Gilgalad

Advantages: A classic evocation of England in the 19th century
Disadvantages: A slow burn of a book requiring attention and time

Perhaps Thomas Hardy’s finest work. This is a story set against the fictional county of Wessex but in reality centred in Dorset. Typical of English literature the love of place and landscape flows through the narrative. The story consists of four main characters – Bathsheba Eberdine, a wilful, country beauty that inherits a farm. Gabriel Oak, a suitor and man of solidity and resolve. Sergeant Troy, a dashing with a sword but flawed ... Read review

Short Analytical Review of Chapter 28
Review of Far From the Madding Crowd - Thomas Hardy by happyhopwood

Advantages: Good Film adaptions
Disadvantages: Long, often hard to comprehend

In this important meeting between Bathsheba Everdene and her new lover Sergeant Francis Troy, Troy shows off his swordsmanship in a small opening in the forest. In many respects, the film representation of this short scene is a faithful depiction of the actual chapter in the novel. The scene starts with Troy looking for Bathsheba, who is apprehensive about meeting him. In the film, Bathsheba stands in a white gown in a small clearing, enclosed ... Read review
