    WHAT IS IT? The aptly named 130bhp - 130 Mjet Sporting is the top of the range, three door "sporting" model in the new Fiat Grande Punto line up. Presumably Fiat added the title "Grande" in there to differentiate this from the last, rather less grand, Punto, the most basic model of which is still on sale. Grande in fact is actually a reference to the somewhat increased size of Fiat's latest super-mini offering. As with all of its' rivals in this sector, this could no longer be regarded as a small car.     As an ex-mechanic I can usually assess a car for the first time after driving it for a few miles, over a number of different roads, (country, city & motorway) I can quickly establish if it handles & performs well, how safe it is to drive, how comfortable it will be & how well constructed it is. For example, how it drives, how it looks, how reliable it is and it’s in car gadgets. If you require a review about the inner workings of this car, you best check someone else’s review.     It has been some time since I have reviewed anything on this website but I felt the urge to come back on here and write a review about my beloved Grande Punto that I bought last year. Now this review will not say its the best car in the world but all things considered you get an awful lot of car for your money. I bought my Fiat Grande Punto Sporting T-Jet in July last year (2010). It was 18 months old on a 58 plate and had only covered 14000 miles. It still had 18 months of its Warranty left and only set me back £8000.     Disadvantages Disadvantages underpowered, build quality not up there with the class best, Fiat dealers

    Price is good, and can be many thousands of pounds cheaper than a clio, corsa e.t.c. The new punto is also cheap to run, and with long 18.000 mile service intervals servicing is cheaper than some rivals as well. Economy of 40 MPG for my 1.2 petrol aint bad either. Although the engine is underpwered for a car of the size and weight, so needs revving a bit, but at home on the motorway at decent speeds. A slightly more powerful engine would improve economy as there would be more power to shift the bulk of the car, but as it is thats my only complaint about the engine.     The Grande Punto first of all is a good looking car, and has brought the Punto model line right up to date. It drives as you would expect from a Fiat, they like to be revved, a lot, the smaller engine models i found to be under-powered as it is a fairly heavy car, the acceleration lacks the instant response that i would like in a car like this. The steering is very light, and using the city button makes parking really easy, altough im not too impressed with visibility out of the car.     I have had 2 grande punto\'s. The first one i had for 3 months then it failed an MOT for a faulty steering rack. This car was replaced like for like by the dealership in september 2006. Since then the replacement car has had 20 faults, including: Seat rails replaced: seat moved when braking Tape Deck A: showing on the dash cluster Door Lock: couldnt open the car from the inside Windscreen blower trim: warped Glove box: Mis-aligned Mileage flashing: Needed a software update Paintwork: has white spots under the black paint Non start: wouldnt start in the mornings Footwell trim: Hanging off ... more

    I bought a 12 month old Grande Punto Dynamic Sport 1.4 from Picadilly Motors in Wakefield and the experience was a good one. However since owning it for just over a month it has developed a rattle in the rear off side door and the door lock in the same door has gone intermittent. Sometimes it will not lock sometimes the outside handle doesn't work. I booked it into a Fiat Dealership locally, in Stockport, with a 10 day lead time, telling them of the lock and rattle problem and they diagnosed it needed a new lock and i would have to come back when the lock was obtained.     i purchased my grande punto (1.9 multi jet sporting) in Feb 2008. i have had so mny problems with this car that it is in th garage more than it is driven and sometimes for up 2 2 weeks. the electric windows go up and down only when they want to. when braking in reverse u hear an awful grinding noise. the car loses acceleration mainly in 2nd gear altho i had quite a scary experience in the fast lane of the motorway! or pulling out on2 a busymain road and it deciding it doesnt wan2 go anywhere! the car also decides not 2 start sometimes and when it does it often comes up that my car had 'excess ... more
