...massive VW's and the baby Fiat are it!
And do you know which of these three cars was most fun to drive?
Yes the Fiat Panda, 2004 Car of the Year - costing less than one sixth of the price
The Volkswagens are big and impart a tremendous feeling of safety certainly. My everyday car, the Honda accord diesel in which we had travelled up from the south coast too has a genuinely reassuring feel of integrity about the way it drives, it too feels like ... ...motorised transport is the Polski Fiat 126. My wife, as do many Poles, associates small cars with danger and death on the road, the more metal around her, the more she feels protected and safe.
Poles also have something of a tradition for regarding their own home produced products as somehow inferior to imported goods, the Fiat panda of course is manufactured in a large modern Fiat plant on the outskirts of Warsaw, Poland's capital city!

...came down to either a Fiat Panda, or Kia Picanto. The Panda is most definately one of the smaller cars on the market, which suited me to the ground. The interior was well presented in terms of materials, although it has to be said the cassette deck as standard was a bit of a disappointment (CD players are an optional extra). However, the best bit about the inside of the Panda has to be the gearstick, cunningly mounted on the center console. Although ... ...its location - it makes switching gears that much quicker. The controls on the center console face slightly off center in the direction of the driver, which can be helpful. All controls are easily accessible and well designed. And the drinks can holder where the gear stick *should* be are also helpful. Although the rear seats are not split fold down on the standard model, they are very easy to put up and down, which can be done with minimum fuss. ...

Advantages: "CITY" driving mode; Price; Fuel Efficiency; Handling; Space; Driving Position Disadvantages: No in-car controls for opening boot, Petrol Tank capacity
...Ford Ka, Skoda Fabia, and Fiat Punto amongst others. Having narrowed it down to the Panda and Fabia, largely based on the various awards these cars have gained in recent times, I had to make my choice.
The Fabia was going slightly above budget, and at about £7500 it didn't come with too many extra features. So I sent my dad to the Fiat dealership. He managed to negotiate a great deal getting the Panda Dynamic 1.2 version with alloy wheels, a cd ... ...that really makes the new Fiat Panda stand out is the "City" driving mode. There's a little button below the air vents, it says CITY. Once you press it, a light comes on in the corner of the dashboard, and all of a sudden, it's as if the steering wheel is hanging in mid air. It becomes light, and boy do I mean LIGHT. The purpose of this is for driving in the city where you may need to make many turns, and for easy parking. And it does the job fantastically. ...

...from university in her new Fiat Panda. Looking in my opinion a like a car cut in half, i was immediately thinking that as we shared a car at the time I was going to look a little silly driving this vehicle.
Now, 3 years later, and having driven the panda on regular occasions, i still feel the same, it does look a little odd, is unusually high with a strangely placed gearstick, but it is undoubtably a nice car to drive. Now I am 22, try to keep up ... ...loo of a car, the Fiat Panda is certainly great value for money.
I have been driving a very basic model, complete with cassette player, (not very useful in a car built in 2005 in my opinion), and without air conditioning and other such amenities. For the money my mum paid though, (under £5000 on a finance deal) this was a great choice for her, and 3 years later we are yet to have a major problem with the vehicle. The Panda is fairly nimble for a ...

Advantages: Price, 4 door , economy , Good driving position Disadvantages: Only 1 door lock , leaks water into car when opening door
...enjoy about driving the little fiat hatchback and I am no fan normally of small cars .
The model we bought was a standard Panda Dynamic 1.2 but still comes with central locking, twin airbags , ABS , EBS , trip computer , body coloured bumpers and a host of other standard extras including my wife's favorite the City steering option . Just press the city switch and a gerbil would be able to sterr the little beauty if it could reach.
If the trip computer ... ...38-45mpg and that is almost exclusively slow city driving constantly stop starting. Haven't had the chance to take it on a long trip yet , but , I imagine at a reseanable cruising speed it would return fantastic figures . And its nice to have a display telling you approx when your fuel will run out , it saves me and the AA trips to my forgetful wife with the petrol can in hand .
On the downside I have only 2 major problems . Firstly there is only ...

Advantages: Funky looks, great quality, well equipped Disadvantages: Hesitant auto gearbox, light coloured trim
...never have normally considered a Fiat before due to their appalling reputation for reliability, rusting, poor dealer service and interior quality, but when my wifes Skoda Fabia needed replacing, we checked the Panda out and I was amazed! The interior quality is nearly as high as in the Skoda (which was terrific), the steering is light and fairly responsive (especially when using the 'City' funtion which lightens it for parking, etc.), the kit is ... ...we actually bought it through JamJar (although now wished we hadn't due to the huge delays...) so it was especially cheap, but even from a dealer I think the price is fantastic value. The biggest downside to this particular model is the auto gearbox - it behaves in a similar manner to a manual gearbox in that there is a slight hesitation when shifting ratios (like when you depress the clutch in a manual) which takes a LOT of getting used to - in ...

Advantages: Affordable, comfortable and Car of the Year 2004 Disadvantages: Road noise, poor drive, possible reliability problems, depreciation
Voted car of the year, should mean that this motor is the best availble, but is it?
Good value, and pretty comfortable means a lot, and when you first sit in the new panda, you are pleasently supprised. Memories of the old cramped Panda, are imediatly banished, and a sense of importance and pride becomes you.
Once you start the engine, and move off though, the illusion is sadly shattered. Awkward cluthc and gear changes make for a difficult drive, ... ...road, the road noise can be very bad, forcing you to turn the stereo up for every 10 miles per hour extra you drive!
A problem with all Fiats in the past has been reliability. As yet, there are few problems, only time will tell though.
Depriciation is another problem of Fiats, It's best to buy second hand if you can, and save a huge loss of money in the first year.
Overall, a good car, in my opinion not worthy of car of the year. What do you think ...
