Advantages: Easy to drive Disadvantages: Cost of parts
...if you go to a fiat dealer. After around about 60 to 70 thousand miles the clutch on mine went which cost £180 to replace, and shortly after that the cylinder head gasket went which cost £260 to replace, thankfully it did not need skimming as this would have added a significant amount. The costs to replace exhaust parts is high due to the design and more thought should have gone into that.

The Punto is a fine small car and I have had 75 Thousand miles and 8 years of driving pleasure from it, and moved my entire worldly possetions in it arround the country 4 times. However I would not have one again due to high servicing costs and lack of nifty extras. ...

Advantages: Cheap petrol bills, cheap cars Disadvantages: costly parts / servicing. Poor quality
Recently owning a 1997 Fiat Punto 1.1sx 3door hatch, I thought the need to share my experiences.
I bought the car, due to its boastful fuel consumption, and its cheap looking maintainance bills.
Firstly I cannot fault the car on it's fuel economy as for the three months I had the car it did quite well in that area, however these cheap fuel bills where indeed off-set by the highly inflated servicing costs at a Fiat dealer. I found parts which more ... ...found difficult to understand as the parts were poor.
The whole feel of the car, rang cheapness in my ears, especially when shutting the doors. When i did thus the whole rear wing area shook and the it sounded like a van door shutting, unlike a modern 1997 car.
after having a light nudge, to the front panel, I found that the build quality was also poor, as only after a light nudge I had the unfortunate experience of replacing certain panels, components, ...

Advantages: Value for money and reliability Disadvantages: Does nothing for my street cred
When I bought my Fiat 5 years ago, I based my choice on value for money. By shopping around the dealers I managed to get a considerable reduction over the list price (far better than most other makes)and although I chose the basic 5 door model with no extras, I got a well equipped vehicle. The car is 5 years old now and has been serviced annually by a Fiat garage. I have had no problems at all and the car is still in pristine condition inside and ... ...the car and fuel economy has been great and lived up to the claims in the brochure. I have also found the service costs to be reasonable (but not as good as the Nissan I had before).
It may not be the car to turn heads, but it has certainly been a sound choice for a reliable, comfortable and economical car. ...

Advantages: Space, Safty and Handling Disadvantages: Choppy ride and niggly faults
Super Mini Sensations
The Fiat Punto was introduced into Great Britain in 1994 and is still currently being produced, now however in a different guise than before.
The Punto is a fashionable motor car, styled by Giugiaro it has good looks on the outside with practicality on the inside. Driving the car is a new experience for many with grippy handling but let down by a choppy and generally unsettled ride.
The car benefits from a modern design which ... ...the interests of those who would only buy the ruin of the mill superminis such as the Corsa or the Micra. Although like so many other Italian manufacturers the cars are plagued by niggling faults which prevent it from being a class leader.
The best models to go for are the 55s, the GT and ELX Cabrio. A solid ‘95N 55s five door could be had for as little as £3000. When buying you should look out for the following:
1) If you lose the ignition key ...

Advantages: City Button, Lots of boot space, good handling, comfortable, cheap Disadvantages: small car
I bought my fiat punto second hand, the previous owner bought it from new and has used it whilst in England, and was selling it as he was returning to his own country.
I got my car for a very good price, and I still have this car now. It's sitting on the drive waiting for my to drive to work tonight in it =] - Why I like the Fiat Punto -
- The shape is nice
- It runs very well
- It has a CITY BUTTON! =] Which makes the power steering very light ... ...a student so I'm very poor unfortunately, this car has been very good for me so far).
Any questions or comments - Don't hesitate to ask or comment =]

...a second hand N reg Fiat Punto 6 months ago and have found it to be an extremely reliable car which drives very well. Other than a minor problem with the electrics (electric windows were not working properly- which has now been fixed), i would fully recommend this car. Advantages: Economical, reliable Disadvantages: Strains a little on Motorways
...I have not used a Fiat Dealer for this. The car is pretty nippy around town and doesn't sup too much fuel, which is ever critical in this day and age. It is ok on the motorway although I use the M1 a lot more than I used to and it is a bit tiring to drive over a long journey due to the 55HP engine. I have loved Fiats for 5 years now and this Punto is my second. (Really want a Coupe!) The interior of a Punto is spacious and airy, with good all round ...

Advantages: economical and stylish Disadvantages: electrics can be temperamental
I have always stuck with Fiat despite the fact that Fiats are not usually the most reliable cars to drive. The electrics are known for being dodgy (next time youre out and about notice how many fiats have only one of their two brake lights working!!!
I originally owned a Fiat Uno Mambo, and it was an ideal town car; nippy, small, smart looking (i had a limited edition), and the petrol and insurance was next to nothing.
Eventually though, i decided ... ...quite low; find a good Fiat garage and you'll be well looked after!! The Punto (both newer and older models) come with Immobiliser and keycode locks, although alarms are extra.
The car itself is comfy inside for a family of four and the boot space is quite good, but not excellent.
The gears are relatively smooth and the engine is quiet, when driving sometimes i cannot hear it at all. (Care for it and it'll take care of you!!)
I would recommend ...

Advantages: Has been reliable so far Disadvantages: Made from kinder egg toys
I bought my Fiat Punto a year ago as my car at the time had died. When I picked up the car I was shocked at the amount of plastic inside the car - it feels like your sat inside a giant kinder egg toy!!! I found that visibility out of the car was poor, and that I can never get my driving position quite right. I am quite tall, but not excessively so and I always feel miles away from the steering wheel and controls when my legs are in the right position ... ...find I can't use the pedals properly. I also regularly make quite long journeys and find that my back and shoulders ache afterwards from driving in such an awkward position.
The steering feels quite loose and as though there is nothing behind it, particularly when I use the "city" button which is supposed to lighten the steering for driving in tight spots like car parks. I just find that I loose all contact with the car. Although, I do think this ...

Advantages: Reliable and Cheap Disadvantages: Undated now
If you`re happy with your image and not bothered about your car too much then these Punto`s are highly recommendaed - cheap as chips as the bloke on the telly says - you can pick up a decent one for under a grand now. If fact, they are more or less all decent.
In contrast to Italian cars of yore, they hardly rust and the electrics work in my experience - even the SX model with leccy windows, central locking and so on seem to go well. Of course, ... ...mk2 (in many ways the same car) - good news for the secondhand buyer.
Engines are bulleteproof - the FIRE unit is a really reliable design - thermostats then head gaskets can go though which will cost around £100 at a garage - the 1108cc is fairly immune to bad maintainance too - I know because I was guilty of this. For some reason, the SX batteries supplied with the car weren`t up to the job but they will probably all have been replaced now so ...

Advantages: Cheap to buy and look distinctive Disadvantages: Not the best made car ever
Well the FIAT Punto 55. This car has split the opinions of my friends in two. Some like the way it looks some hate it, but it always gets a reaction.
I have the 95 model and i bought it september 2002. I have done 10,000 miles since then and so far had to replace the sump cover (i have speed bumps down my road), rear suspension bushes and a new clutch. Speaking to various dealers the suspension and clutch are common problems with this model but ... ...may be worth checking whether the work has already been done.
The engine is a peach and for a 1.1 is very nice to drive with pull from as low as 2000 rpm. The gearbox does not like to be rushed so for all the boy racers out there beware as it is very easy to grind the box if you use too much force.
The car has very predictable handling, but it does suffer from body roll, although the car itself does a fantastic job of letting you know what is going ...
