Addictive and Compelling

Advantages: An addictive read, emotive, insightful and good character growth.
Disadvantages: Some dark themes and quite depressing.

...name of Virginia Andrews. Flowers in the Attic was published in 1979 and followed over the next six years by four other books in the series. The books focus on the Dollanganger family and are told from the viewpoint of Cathy Dollanganger, the eldest daughter of the family. The books were quite controversial at their time of publication, and still are now to a certain extent, due to the strong themes of child abuse, child neglect and incest that ...
...books following the tale that Flowers in the Attic portrays, Petals on the Wind, If there be Thorns and Seeds of Yesterday. As you can probably tell the titles of the books have the common imagery of flowers running throughout them, meant to link the five stories together and also the recurring image in the Flowers in the Attic book of a flower growing just as a child should grow. The Plot The plot of Flowers in the Attic sees the Dollanganger family ...

...share it with you. Flowers in the Attic is based on a true story, and is written in the first person. This, coupled with a brilliant writing style of Virginia Andrews makes the story seem so very real, even though the plot seems so unlikely. The story begins in a small town in America where a happy family live seemingly perfect lives. Cathy and her siblings, Chris, Cory and Carrie are waiting with thier mother Corrine for their father to come home ...
...All are equally good, although Flowers in the attic can easily be read as a novel on its own. Virginia Andrews wrote a second series of books and a single novel as well as this set, and her unfinished works were completed and published after her death. In my opinion the books published before she died are much better than the ones she didn't not complete herself. ...

This powerful, moving and compelling novel is the story of Cathy, Chris, Cory and Carrie, four innocent children with a horrifying story to tell. The ‘Dresden Dolls’, as they are nicknamed, are beautiful, happy and have a seemingly perfect life. This all changes when their beloved father is killed in a car crash. After, their Mother suddenly announces they cannot pay their debts and must leave immediately to go to her parent’s house. They are wealthy, ...

Later their mother reveals her secret, that her late husband Christopher was in fact her half-uncle, and because of their incest, they were long ago cast out from the family and removed from her father’s will. She intends to win back his trust, but in the meantime insists the children are hidden away in a distant quarter of the magnificent house until she receives her inheritance. Over the three year period they are locked away ...

Four Hidden Secrets

Advantages: A truly amazing story based on real life
Disadvantages: Very sad in places

Ever read a story that includes cruelty, death, incest and greed. This is one of the saddest books I have ever read as the recipients of all the above are four children. What makes it even worse is it is based on a true story. Once picked up you will find it almost impossible to put down again. The most compelling novel that I have ever read and although three more books about the Dollanger family followed it, they did not catch the drama in the ...

Heart Rendering story that will leave you in tears

Advantages: Excellently written books

Flowers in the attic, is the first instalment of a four part series of books, written by Virginia Andrews, and is based on a true story. It is a heart rendering story about four children Christopher, Cathy and their two younger twins Corrie and Carrie, the story is narrated by the oldest girl Cathy. The story starts about these children, who are living a normal, happy family life, until one day their father is killed in an accident. From this ...

Gradually as time goes by, their mother to whom used to frequently visit them and bring them gifts, ...

Bloomin' Marvellous!

Advantages: Gripping and compelling
Disadvantages: A bit daft at times

Flowers in the attic is the first in the series of novels about the Dollanganger family written by Virginia Andrews. Don't be put off by the fact that they always seem to turn up in charity shops next to 'It Shouldn't Happen To A Vet'! The story tells the tale of four children; Chris, Cathy and little twins Cory and Carrie. They live a cosseted existence with their mother and father, wanting for nothing until their father is killed in a car accident. ...
...and also the prequel to Flowers In The Attic - Garden Of Shadows, which tells the grandmother's story, which is also a good read, but to be honest these are the best books by far, as the tale of the Dollanganger family borders on the ridiculous in the other books. This is an old book, so is generally available online for about 2.50-3 quid, or have a look in the Charity shops - 50p!!! ...

Flowers In The Attic By Virginia Andrews - Review

Advantages: Shocks and Thrills, Excellent Writing, The Best Book I Have Ever Read !
Disadvantages: None - Although Those Hoping That Books By Her Ghost Writer Will Match Up, Will Disappointed

I forst read this book age 12 and to date it still remains my favourite of all time. I have re-read this book countless times over the years and can still picture every charachter in my head as they are so well described. Tragedy ensues and the children are forced to live with their grandparents, however their grandfather must never know they were born. The ...

Advantages: It has everything you could possibly want from a book.
Disadvantages: There are none

== Buying The Book == I didn't actually buy this book, my mum bought me a "job lot" of randomly selected books from a book club magazine a few years ago and this was one of them. From the start my mum said read "Flowers In The Attic" it's good. I read all the others first and kept putting it off because I didn't think I would like it. It looked boring to me to be honest. Then, one night I had nothing to read and thought what the hell. So I curled ...
...cover that night without putting it down once. Then when I was finished I turned the book over and started again. == The Book == The book is 346 pages long and every single page is brilliant. The story is about four children - Christopher (14 at start), Cathy (12 at start), Cory and Carrie (4 at start). It starts off with them and their mother Corinne getting things ready for a birthday party for their father. Except he never comes home. With ...
