4 Stars Ford Escort : 'Credit Crunch Car' Review with images 29/10/2009

Advantages Advantages Cheap to run, plenty of room, 5 seats, good first car, cheap parts, widely available, large boot

Disadvantages Disadvantages no power steering, slow going up a steep hill

The 1.4 Ford Escort is quite a car in many ways. Featuring 5 doors, a large boot and a sun roof, this spacious car certainly has all the features. It pretty much has everything you find in a standard car, except power steering which can make moving when stationary a hard task. Being quite an old car means the Ford Escort is an ideal first car because the insurance is only around £60-£70 a month for someone aged 20-22. I was fully insured for my first year, as this is when most people have a few minor scrapes and bumps as they're new to the road. Then I moved onto third party fire and theft for ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap on parts, cheap on road tax, cheap and chearful

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor handling, sluggish, prone to rust.

I bought this car a couple of years ago when I was in between cars, I have a van that is used for my Business during the day, but you cant realy use it for pleasure, or trips out to places. So I bought this car .. cheap ( £100) with no MOT, and in need of a few mechanical repairs. ***First thoughts*** The escort I got had a bent rear axle, ( probably due to the poor handling !! ) and was in need of some welding. , MOT and tax later , the car was back on the road. I must admit I had a very low view of this car , compaired to other cars I've owned, but I have to say this car was a pleasure to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap all rounder

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Having always wanted a Ford Escort since the early days of taking my driving lessons, 9 years on after passing my test I am now the chuffed owner of one. Four weeks ago I set out to buy myself a cheap run-around as my fiancé uses our main car for work. I sifted through all the classifieds in the free local newspapers, read postcards in newsagents windows and then with the kind assistance of my sister visited a few garages who offer reliable bargain cars in the form of part exchanges etc. that would be within my budget. I would say I was prepared to pay £400 maximum for a small 3-door which ... more

Advantages Advantages lots of interior space and handy compartments.

Disadvantages Disadvantages rather low seats for little ladies like myself!

I owned a very reliable Ford Escort for just over 6 months. It was a K reg 1.4i L and never faultered once. The only real reason that i sold it was because it was broken into and it never quite felt the same to me after that. shame really because it served me well. it was very economical on fuel, always got me from A to B without any trouble and it had the comfiest feeling seats in the world! very lush on my bum indeed. the only problem i had with it was that i found the seats were rather low down. but then again i am only a wee 5'3" but i did find that i had to strain myself whilst looking ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap insurance, reliable, quite quick

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uses a lot of petrol, no power steering!! :(

I've owned a 1993 Ford Escort 1.4LX (5 speed manual, single injection) for about 2 months now and to tell the truth, its no BMW but its a great drive. Interior/Storage The front seats are a little hard but surprisingly comfortable with plenty of legroom. The drivers seat has angle adjusters on the seat and backrest which is great because with a little messing around I've found my perfect driving position. Some people have said the passenger seat is a bit low but I don't really think thats a problem! Its difficult to say how much legroom there is in the back because I have never travelled in ... more

Advantages Advantages Brilliant as a runaround, cheap insurance, fuel economy is good

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

I've had my battered little Escort since January 2000, and it's done me proud so far. Ok, I admit that the body work has seen better days, and that the interioe would probably look better without the 2 tonnes of teletubbie biscuits on the floor, but as a little run around it's brilliant. It's an E reg, so it's knocking on a bit now, and it's certainly clocking up the miles. Having said that, it still starts first time, it's brilliant on fuel economy and as a mother of 2 kids, it's the right size for packing in the kids, pushchair, shopping, and an unimpressed hubby since we sold his mondeo ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap to buy, reliable, low insurance, cheap parts

Disadvantages Disadvantages Electrics have been a bit dodgy when raining!

I bought this car 3 years ago and have never had any problems with it. Mine is a silver one with hatchback, 5 doors and rear spoiler so looks nice as well. The car was well looked after when I bought it and had been regularly serviced so if you are buying one make sure yours has! Its cheap to run, very cheap insurance and lovely to drive. It has all the trimmings such as electric windows at the front, power steering, central locking, drivers airbag, immobiliser and alarm. I have had no problems whatsoever in 3 years apart from the electrics (central locking) going a bit funny when wet but this ... more

Advantages Advantages Is old but runs like a dream, and looks it.

Disadvantages Disadvantages rust is always an issue

I have only been driving since March 2000 and in that time have had two cars. The first, a mini, the second an escort. My escort is a 1.4 D regestration escort and is in fantastic condition. My sister was bought the car in January 2000 for £600, it was in pristine condition and showed promise for the future. I then purchased the car in September 2000 and since then I have used it to go to school and back as my school is quite far away. It has not yet caused me any trouble and has flown throen its MOT last month, a year after it was bought by my sister. I have family all over the counrtry and ... more

Advantages Advantages Spacious, smooth drive, nice look

Disadvantages Disadvantages sluggish, handling isn't great

I have owned a ford escort for 5 months and My opinion is that it is a perfect family car, no more, no less.. It is spacious, has a big boot, quite comfortable, and is quite ergonomical. Ive also found its extremely reliable and has never had a problem starting even on the coldest mornings. It does good miles to the gallon and is very cheap to fix if anything ever goes wrong with it However, it is quite slow, not too good acceleration (the 1.4 edition that is) doesn't handle too well and is generally quite sluggish on the roads compared to the 1.3 Fiesta i used to own. Even though the engines ... more
