So, I was eating chocolate......

Advantages: Cheap, Reliable Engine, Easy to Maintain
Disadvantages: Rust, Boring, Low Image

...Flour, Green King IPA, Ford Escort, you get the picture. Enough of the simile, lets get onto the nitty gritty business about telling you about the mk6 Ford Escort rather than rambling on about chocolates and pissy "real" ale. Launched the same week as Take That's 'Never Forget' the Escort was in true Ford style basically the same old Escort we'd always glanced over in yet another new bodystyle. Drawing from what I would imagine was the same design ...
...became the standard engines. Ford often maligned for their reliability and drivability quietly, and for many years now have been churning out an engine that is outstandingly reliable, smooth, modern and well built engines. The Zetec-E. The 1.6/1.8 Zetec engines offered in the Escort are gems. Whilst they never where the most powerful in the class, the Zetec has gained a reputation for being reliable. Compared to its counterparts at the time, GMs ...

Ford Escort Finesse

Advantages: spacious family car
Disadvantages: RUST(common Ford problem) not very safe

FORD ESCORT FINESSE This review is based on a Finesse model of an escort, this model is a 1.6 16v, and it was first registered in 2000 on a 'W' plate. PERSONAL OWNING I owned one of these cars from 2000 till 2006 unfortunately it was an insurance write off so had to be replaced. In the time I owned this car it had a few problems such as the head gasket going along with the cylinder head but this was at around 90,000 miles. It had general ware ...
...suspension problems etc. Being a ford they are prone to rust and at around about 4-5 years old this car did suffer quite badly from rust mainly noticeable around the arches or the car. I used this car as a family car in the time I had it I found it spacious for things such as family transporting, shopping trips and the family dogs. The boot was spacious with room for plenty of shopping or luggage rarely had to use the rest of the car. It wasn't ...

...immobiliser is standard on most Ford cars. Attached to the battery and horn, will go off when a door or the boot is opened before the immobiliser is turned off. I have had a few problems with this as the alarm went off a few times for no apparent reason, but was checked by the Ford dealer who found nothing wrong with it. A full tank of petrol on the Escort is around £35-40 and is very economical. I only really do the school run and £20 worth of ...

Low cost motoring

Advantages: Cheap with all electrical toys
Disadvantages: "Essex Boy" image

I have a Ford Escort 1.6 16v LX which basically has all the electrical toys plus I have remote locking too. (very useful, a must have, especailly good as a safety feature for women in car parks!) This car started its life as a company car & now has 140,000 miles on it & is still breezing through MOTs.(although I do have an annoying rattle from the Cat, but if it's passing emissions....) It's 6 years old now but will do a ton up the motorway (not ...
...it's only every 60,000 miles. Ford has the usual main dealer expense problem (ie a horrendous hourly rate!!) so make sure you shop around once they're out of warranty!! Service interval is every 10,000 miles & plugs air filter etc evry 30,000 miles. One thing I have found is that if changing oil yourself & you don't have a pit, it is necessary to remove the front off-side wheel in order to get to the oil filter; even then it's a bit fiddly! This ...

Yet another ford escort review

Advantages: Nice engine, cheap, insurable
Disadvantages: offset drivers seat, fuel economy

...one. A 1994 M plate ford escort 1.6 LX. Coming from a very basic 1984 1.3 golf, it was amazing. It had a fews toys - power steering, electric windows. It had a 5 speed gearbox, decent headlights, proper electrics, reasonable speakers. It didn't smell of death. It accelerated. All these things my old golf didn't do. I ran this car for 6 months - 5000 miles. It was subjected to my usual servicing schedule of a 10000 mile service with a 5000 mile ...
...very well to this, the oil I was dropping out at 5000 miles was still quite clear and light brown. Fuel economy was constant at 30mpg, no matter how I drove it. Even on a motorway journey to bristol and back from kent. This is also probably the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. The only notable fault in 5000 miles was the central locking ECU giving up the ghost. It cost me £75 to get it diagnosed, but the part was only 15 quid from a local ...

An OK car.

Advantages: Cheap to buy.
Disadvantages: Lack of power & repair costs for older models as certain parts keep wearing out.

I have owned my Ford Escort 1.6 LX for 18 months now and I paid £2700 for it. It is not a bad looking car at certain angles but models without the rear spoiler does look a bit bland. It drives fairly well on small roads and motorways. I have added alloy wheels to mine which has slightly wider tyres then the original ones and it has made so much difference to the handling and road holding of the car (original wheels & tyres size - 175/65/R14. New ...
...the bad points about this car (Keeping in mind that this car is a P-reg manufactured in 1997). I think this car is very low set, and I keep scraping the bottom of the car on speed humps and my driveway if I have more then myself in the car. Because of this, the exhaust has been replaced twice already. The driver seat rattles a bit and does not seem to be bolted down properly. Actually, it was due to the adjustable height mechanism, which had a small ...

The best car I've ever owned

Advantages: Too many to list
Disadvantages: No digital clock

I have recently bought a Ford Escort LX 1600 , and it is without doubt , the best car I have ever owned . Enjoyable to drive , and large enough to seat the entire family , the 1600 Vitec engine gives me more than enough power to cruise on the motorway or potter around town. The interior is finished to a high standard , one gripe , why did Ford not spend an extra few bob on a digital clock ? , and especial mention must be made of the excellent radio. ...

Ford Escort 1.6 16v Estate mkV

Advantages: Cheap to buy, cheap enough to run, cheap insurance, space.
Disadvantages: Rust, comfort and looks

...all garages know the common Ford faults. Be prepared for high mileage estates as they are used by builders, decorators or salesmen. Signs to look out for are worn steering wheel, seats and gear knob. Make sure there is no play in the steering wheel or you will be looking at new power steering in the future. Make sure you run engine for a while so that you can hear it through all the rev ranges as they tend to have problems with the idle control valve. ...
...ECU and if something seems out of place, get someone who knows about the running of engines. Basically if something don't look right, get further help or advice. This is a cheap car, cheap to run, cheap on insurance, most garages will know how to fix it, it has plenty of space without a huge engine. Would I get another one ? no why ? the mk5 is old now and that is the only reason why, but I would buy another Escort if I needed a cheap car. ...

Quick review of Ford Escort 1.6 Hatchback

Had the escort for about 8 months now great car. Had no problems so far apart from i had to replace the clutch just after i brought it but that is to be expected of a car thats done 98,000 miles. Very reliable. excellent acceleration in every gear especially 2nd it can get up to 75 MPH in second gear if you push it high in the revs. very efficient does on average about 40 MPG still remains very efficient when you drive like a maniac. never had any problems with it so far the odd bit of rattling but nothing major. This car is highly recomended if your looking for a cheap car that you can speed about in. you can get the 1997 model nowadays for about £900 definatly worth buying. For £900 it doesnt really matter to much if you crash it into a tree or somthing ...

Review of Ford Escort 1.6 Hatchback

Reliable motoring

Advantages: Reliable, cheap to run
Disadvantages: Doesnt look as good as some others but so what?

OK, I'm not rich and I probably never will be, but my battered little Escort that cost me £500 twelve months ago is still going strong and I'm happy with it. Maybe I've got a wicked streak in me, but when I see people in brand new cars that have broken down, I have a little giggle to myself. My Escort may not look like the dogs doodahs, but it suits me. It doesn't use petrol like it's going out of fashion, it doesn;t do more than 85mph downhill ...
...Ok, so it's a bit basic. No electric windows, no fancy gadgets to make the seats move, no electric windows, but it does have all I need - ie: four wheels, brakes and a stereo. The Escort is one of the most popular cars, and it's easy to see why. It's reliable - it'll start first time after being stood in the rain for a week. If anything goes wrong on it (which isn;t often) I can pop to the local scrapyard and get the bits I need for a few quid, ...

Ford Escort 1.6, Mexico and SI

Advantages: Cheap to buy
Disadvantages: a little tinkering maybe.

...try!!! ALWAYS use Ford filters and plugs, especially oil filter, too long to explain just do it! Never had the alarms play up except new switch for drivers door pick up. Ignition barrel can be sticky, silicon spray helps inside and a little grease on the key now and again! New barrels are not too dear but I never needed one. The fan motor packed up on one, scrap yard easy find and cheap. The engine never suffered from the effects of a little overheating, ...
...pretty tough!? The SI carried my son safely round the dales of Yorkshire for eighteen months, wearing federal hero tyres (great budget treads). Both cars are still buzzing around with new owners, so 1995 was maybe a good year for the escort? I would still have both cars now but for a small windfall, hope this info has been of some use. ...

...Also own a 1982 Ford Escort XR3 which has been looked after and has covered 185,000 miles so the rumours about ford being unreliable are definately un true. Ford Escort 1.6 LX

Advantages: cheap to run, fairly nippy, good on motorway
Disadvantages: bit noisy, clutch high up, dull interior

I bought a 1997 on an R plate Escort LX for a bargain of £1000 and had a rather jolly 9 months of motoring out of it. I had only just passe dmy test and wanted a car which was £1000 or less but had to have power steering. It was often hard as most of the cars I looked at with PAS were all over £1000 and the cars under were non PAS rust buckets like aging Fiestas ad Fiat Puntos. I found this gem privately, which is an ex-fleet car and although had ...
...felt much nipper than the 1.3 Fiesta I had learned to drive in. Lets start off with the cars image. I was lucky to have a black coloured one, which although got dirty very quickly, is a nice shade for the escort, Gives it a sporting look even though its a fairly basic LX model. Mine came with the boot spoiler which improved the image a little. The interior was functional and practical - all the switches seemed to be in the right place (although ...
