A second hand bargain?

Advantages: Purchase price, features, fun
Disadvantages: Running costs

...purchased my Mondeo from a Ford dealership as this was the easiest way to guarantee a reasonable quality car and it made things easier with my finance arrangement. There are cheaper ways to get hold of a Mondeo though so choose the outlet that is right for you. I personally don't mind paying a small premium for the quality of service I receive from my Ford dealership. Previously I had been driving an Escort that was coming up to having 100,000 miles ...
...If you go to a Ford dealership the best buys, with other models as well as Mondeos, are the ex-mobility cars. These will on the whole have had extras installed at purchase, been well maintained and have a low mileage. This is of course a rule of thumb so do check for yourself. I waited a few weeks for the right specification and model to come in but it was an ex-mobility. My purchase was for marginally over £6000 and had at the time 22,000 miles. ...

...I doubt that Ford as a Car Manufacturer need much of an introduction. An American company they have adapted over the years thorugh all the up's and down's that the car market has been through and I think they have come out a winner and now as well as the Ford Motor Company they also own Aston Martin, Jaguar and own 25% of Mazda. When is a Ford a Ford you may ask yourself, I think that the influence of the other companies under the umbrella of Ford ...

The Mondeo first appeared in 1993 and was designed with the Granada market in mind, sales rep's and executives as well as families found it appealing but to be honest we had a Granada at the time and we didn't think it would suit us but ...

...which I bought from a Ford dealer for £11,000. I ran this car for 2 years, which doubled the mileage from 30,000 when I bought it, to 60,000 when I sold it - yet I still managed to get £8,750 in p/x from the supplying dealer when I traded it in for my next car - an Escort Cosworth. The car was as tough as nails - I did not spend a single penny on reapirs, the only costs were mot, tyres and servicing. It was the most pleasant car interior I have ever ...
...None of the usual Ford quality problems come into play on the Mondeo - no creaks or rattles inside - the interior components are compiled from good quality noise-reducing materials, and the whole car oozes quality from using the door handle, to the thoughtful vanity mirror lamps, footwell lights, and the lights-on alarm, which is a pleasant aircraft-style bleep. Also, these cars don't rust - compare any K reg mondeo with the fiestas, escorts, or ...

...MECHANICALLY: The bog-standard Ford engine has been set up for good low-speed torque (good) with a distinct 'step' in the performance above 5000rpm - a figure rarely reached in normal driving. Coupled with a decent gearbox, the tall gear ratios (26mph/1000rpm in top), means the engine is doing barely 3000 rpm at motorway speeds. The plus side of this tall gearing is that the fuel economy is astonishingly good. I used to do a 50 mile round trip to ...
...cruise control virtually all the time (set to 50mph), I was regularly getting over 40mpg, whilst any journeys on the motorway (again, using cruise control set at 75 mph), would result in 44mpg!! I'd consider that an excellent, near-diesel, level of economy for a large, heavy family car. For anyone who doubts those figures, you are welcome to check the credit-card receipts and I should point out that country roads at 6.45am tend to be pretty much ...

Second Helpings

Advantages: Top of the class for driving ability
Disadvantages: Horrible looks, Ford badge, depreciation

The Ford Mondeo is hard to escape in the press at the moment. The weekly and monthly car magazines write about it all the time, there are adverts in the papers and a new one on TV. So, by now I will presume that you all know that Ford have an all-new Mondeo, unless, of course, you have been living in space for a while. I may as well admit up front that I can’t stand Ford cars. I hate them more than Nissans, but less than Vauxhalls. Their “new-edge” ...
...This is not so. Ford cars are reliable and they handle extremely well. It’s just that they are ugly with cheap interiors and everyone has one. By the time my da got this car out for a test drive at the weekend, I was already sick of the look of the new Mondeo. It retains elements of the “radical” looking Ford Focus, but only a few. It is still the Mundano in terms of styling that I know and hate, albeit a Mundano that carries on little from its ...

I have been driving the Ford Mondeo Ghia X estate for 18 months now. We purchased this particular model because it is has a 2000ltr engine which gives great performance, especially on the overtaking (plenty in reserve). The ride is really comfortable with the added bonus of air con. Our model also has an electric sun roof, electric windows, 6 cd autochanger, ABS and cruise control. It is one of the longest/widest estates on the road, thus making ...
...Ideally it is a cruising car with plenty of load space, ideal for holidays. I think the insurance is on the high side, about £500pa, but worth it. The average mpg for us is 36mpg, with cruise control on a longer journey of about 100 miles it was up to 40mpg. If you are thinking of purchasing a large family car with a bit of umph under the bonnet without being over the top, this is the car for you. ...

...the technology that makes the Ford Focus so much fun to drive. The car sits unusually high but feels very firm and re-assuring when pushed. The huge low profiles give tremendous grip but this is at the expense of increased road noise and poor MPG. The engine is gutsy throughout the rev range with positive throttle and brake response. Steering is precise and the suspension responds well to driver input. I have driven tighter cars than this but the chassis is well up to the job and will give the sporty driver something to smile about Performance: ...

...environment? Another bland offering from Ford or a wonder of modern technology. I have been using a Mondeo 2.0 litre petrol automatic estate for the past 4 months, and whilst the car in automatic form has its disadvantages, the advantages outweigh the weaknesses in terms of a good family car. In Zetec guise the car has a great spec, semi auto climate control, power steering, ABS, remote stereo controls, electric windows all round and alloy wheels ...
...it makes you wonder why Ford offer this as an option. As far as space goes, the Mondeo is fantastic. Rear legroom is excellent, boot space on the estate is cavernous, and with the rear seats down that trip to Ikea is simple! Front passenger and driver are amply looked after in a cockpit that is light and airy with nice controls that even runs to a leather steering wheel. The car generally for all its space and exterior size does not feel unwieldy ...

Mondeo - a family friend

Advantages: Great handling, comfortable to drive
Disadvantages: Petrol consumption

Well I've been driving my Mondeo for two years and in that time i have driven 70,000 miles, so I think I can say from a point of experience, that it is one of the comfiest cars i have had the pleasure of driving, both on and off motorway. I have a 2.0l GLX, and it handles well, fuel consumption is good, it cruises at, well shall we say I'm normally speeding..... it has all the extras aircon, heated frount and read windows, reasonable sterio, electric ...
...more than some estate cars i could mention. Servicing and MOT's have worked out quite reasonable, you can get spares and type without remorgaging your house. So what's bad about it? I'm not sure, there are quicker cars in the same class, but who care, if you're a boy-racer you won't buy one anyway. If you're after an unique car this isn't for you cos there are hundreds of them out there. One part that does seem to wear on them is the frount wishbone ...

A proper family car

Advantages: Safe, loads of room, comfortable drive
Disadvantages: No DIY mechanics on this one.

This was the first 'grown up' car that we had - and we love it. It's got everything - 2.0l 16v engine, ABS, power steering, sunroof, electric front windows, electric seat, drivers airbag etc. The handling is excellent and the ABS has certainly helped to make us feel safer whilst on the road. The power steering is really light and easy making turning on a coin easy (should you want to!) There is plenty of room as well - just the thing when you've ...
...also handle quite an amount of holiday luggage/shopping and still have room for a double pushcair. The back seats fold down as well making extra room in the boot for transporting bigger objects or moving house and piling your worldy possessions into the car. Fuel economy is good, very important when petrol prices are so high, although it does take around £50 to fill the tank. The major problem with this car though is that apart from adding oil ...

...it is easier to overtake. Ford engine's like 5w 30 oil. It apparently makes the engine more economical as well. The weight of the car is 1.5 tonnes. One common fault is the heater switch so check all functions of the heater work. (It's only £20 for the switch anyway). Another common fault is the boot lock not unlocking with the central locking.
