...The Orchard, Strawberry Fields & Frankie & Benny’s. I have to say here, I was going to do a ‘specific’ review of the Frankie & Bennys where I live however, I’m a bit of a chicken and I have no idea what this review is going to turn out like and I don’t want the next time that I go into the place for them to throw pasta at me or something like that. When Frankie Giuliani was 10 years old, he moved from Sicily to Ellis Island New York back in 1924. They moved into a predominantly Italian neighbourhood called Little Italy, and there they opened a restaurant. In High School Frankie met Benny, a third generation American, and when Frankie’s father retired in 1953 Frankie & Benny took over the business and they combined the best of popular American food with ...

...when we remembered the new Frankie & Benny's Restaurant that had opened only recently in our area. So we called our friends, Izzy & Carl, asking if they would like to join us, and that was settled, it was dinner at F&B's this afternoon. _* This review will be based on the Colchester branch * _

We arrived at the restaurant at around 3pm and the place was rather empty, finding car parking spaces relatively close to the restaurant was ... ...quickly. What I like about Frankie & Benny's restaurants is the fact that you can see all the food being cooked and prepared in the kitchen, so you know for sure that all the food is fresh and you can see that the kitchens are lovely and clean. Our appetizers were brought to us after about 5 minutes and all four were brought at once, which was nice. As I mentioned earlier, I opted for the Mushroom Alfredo and I have to say, it was gorgeous! I'm not ...

Frankie and Benny's is a New York Italian themed restuarant. It is a chain which currently has 180 restuarants spread across the UK. Frankie and Benny's originally began when Frankie Giuliani was just a little boy. He moved with his family to an all Italian neighbourhood in New York in 1924. Before long Frankies father managed to get a restuarant up and running in which the whole family pitched in and contributed their own favourite recipes, but ... ...home-style cooking'. Frankie started high school where he met an American boy named Benny and made a life long friend. When Frankies fathers retired in 1953 Frankie and Benny took over the business where they combined 'the best of popular American food with traditional Italian dishes'. I have been to 3 different Frankie and Benny's (Basildon, Chelmsford and Braintree) and they are all very similar in terms of appearance and service. The restuarants ...

Went to Frankie and Benny(s)”!!!
Doesn’t quite scan, I know, but you get the idea!!
Yesterday was my 38th birthday and, as we only had the youngest of our brood at home over lunch, we felt safe enough venturing out for a celebratory lunch and opted for Frankie & Benny’s in Tamworth. Neither my better half nor I had been before, although I have been to the restaurant in Dudley, so we both sallied forth eager to find out more!!!

Frankie met Benny in High School and the pair took the business on in 1953 when Frankie’s father retired. They grew the business based on traditional Italian and popular American dishes, and it has now become a very successful and identifiable chain.

F&B's is the well known American-Italian 'restaurant'/diner. There'll be one near you somewhere. They have the usual Italian restaurant chain story. Papa Luigi arriving in the states with just 20 Lira and a goat. Had to cook the goat with a pinch of dried Italian seasoning to feed knife-toting steel workers and on that a reputation was built. Well, not quite, the real story is on the same lines but the steel workers didn't have ... ...Decor

Every Frankie and Bennys looks the same. Pretend Italian from a catalogue. Not unattractive, just well cheesy. Toilet wallpaper made of newspaper clippings from New York newspapers and 1950's music in the background. Diner style furnishings.

Arrived hot and was tasty and the portions were very generous. We all struggled to finish, apart from me who ate everyone else's left-overs until I felt sick. My wifes ...

...cook and as we neard Frankie and Bennys we saw the luminous lights, the 'happy eaters' and the nice looking atmosphere.
Neither of us had ever been to one before, so we thought it would be worth a look.
Being a Wednesday night it was easy to get a table, without booking. The first thing that struck us was the cheesy 60 style dinner look. As you'd expect this place done steaks, burgers, chicken, pizza, pasta dishes etc. etc. The prices would be reasonable - if the food was good, but for the c*** we were served, the prices were extortionate!!
We ordered a cheesy garlic bread, and this was the nicest part of the meal. This does not bode well when you consider that it came out of a packet, pre-prepared, and only had to be chucked under the grill till the cheese melts. ...

*The chain*
Chances are there will be a Frankie and Benny's restaurant somewhere near you, as there are possibly hundreds in the mainland UK, so you are probably already familiar with this chain of restaurants. For those of you who aren't, these are described as 'New York Italian Restaurants', which is ... ...that few people come to Frankie and Beny's for something particularly healthy, so i do'nt know how well these sell. Prices are all around the £7-11 mark for main courses, but obviously it depends on what you order.
During the day they do a Lunch menu, which is available from 11am-5pm. I would strongly recommend coming to Frankie and Benny's at this time, as it is considerably cheaper than the normal menu. On the lunch menu you can get one course ...

...a pretty successful trip to Frankie and Benny's at Brighton Marina and have been to their Chichester branch too, so I felt inclined to write up my experience. Having read other reviews of this chain, it seems to me that the quality may vary greatly from location to location, so bear this in mind.
Frankie and Benny's is a chain of restaurants with a New York Italian theme, which I have found to be good value, especially for families.

... ...are intended to support the Frankie and Benny 'story', with black and white photos of Italian Americans, including Frank Sinatra, Joe Dimaggio and some boxers who I probably ought to be able to name for you, but can't. It's all a bit corny and forced, and no doubt replicated faithfully across their 100 locations, but as a look it's not bad. ...we step into our local Frankie and Benny's in Liverpool we are greeted at reception and asked if we have ever visited before. With "booth" style seating Frankie Benny's is a definite throwback and this born and bred Brit cannot help but think of television show "Happy Days". Frankie & Benny's has been a pretty recent discovery for me, as they have only recently built one in my town. However, I was really impressed on my first visit so have been back for more on a few occassions!

The story goes (and this is on the menu's and pictured on the walls of the restaurant) that Frankie left Italy for America with his parents at 10 years of age. His parents opened a restaurant in New York, where Frankie became ... ...retired, Frankie took over the business with Benny and this saw the blend of Italian and American flavours that we see today.

They offer a breakfast, lunch and dinner menu. I've never eaten from the breakfast menu myself, but this includes traditional english breakfast (slight departure from the Italian-American theme here) and american pancakes.

...new term. Why Frankie and Benny's? Well. we had been here before, and in our dim and distant memories it was quite good. As well as that it served all purposes, the kids wanted pizza, and hence Pizza Hut, this however goes down like a lead balloon with my other half! He likes steak, chicken, etc, me I'm not fussy, so we know Frankie and Bennys do all these things, and we know its quite reasonable price wise. There is another American Type restaurant ... ...Thank God we're not going there! This F&B's (too long to keep typing) is a stand alone unit, in one of those leisure centres in Bristol, and yes it has that garish American/Italian look to it. Lots of Red and Green awnings, and dark wood. This particular restaurant has tables and chairs outside, but the weather wasn't perfect so inside it was. Our local Frankie and Benny's is right next to a cinema complex which also holds a lot of restaurants. For this reason, it's not usually our first choice when out as there are more convenient places to eat without having to cross a road. A busy Saturday night insisted we changed our plans as all the restaurants had an hours wait, so we ventured across the road to F+B's. The wait there was only twenty minutes as they were serving the overflow from ... ...dishes (more on this later). Frankie and Benny were school friends and took over the running of Frankie's dad's restaurant in 1953, hence F+B's were born!
The restaurant has a bar attached where you can just go for drinks or use this area as a waiting place whilst your table is being prepared. This area can get busy at peak times and you wont necessarily find a place to sit. It is attached to the restaurant however you will probably have to strain ...

*The History*
Frankie & Bennies is a New York Italian Style Restaurant which apparently came about in 1953 from a certain Frankie Giuliani. Frankie's family moved to Brooklyn in the 1920's from Sicily and started up a small family run Italian restaurant. It was in 1953 that Frankie's father retired and handed it over to Frankie, who along with his best friend from school, Bennie, built the restaurant up into what we now know as Frankie & Bennies, ... ...it would be not to take this story all too literal as there have been suggestions that like most chains they want to give you a good story as entertainment and it may not be entirely true, but just in case it is, there ya go!
*The Theme*
As explained in the history, the restaurant has a 1950's New York Italian theme based on the era it was supposedly created and the culture behind it. There is swing music playing in the background which, although ...
