    Advantages Advantages Quick and easy.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Tastes horrible, unless you're from Yorkshire in which case it's a fine gastronomic experience.

First of all, a disclaimer. This isn’t about steak and kidney pie. It’s about chicken and mushroom pie. There wasn’t a category for that and when you suggest a product to Ciao it generally takes ages for them to be arsed to add it. I haven’t got that kind of patience, frankly. Anyway, you’ll probably like the chicken and mushroom one more. After all, kidney tastes just offal (apologies). Believe it or not, I have never in my life had a Fray Bentos pie. That’s unusual, given that my diet consists mainly of peanuts, toast and the occasional banana. You’d think Fray Bentos pies would have slotted ... more

Advantages Advantages Taste good, handy to have in, inexpensive when on offer

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uruguay must have had a grudge against us, they are so hard to open.

It's not "Pie in the Sky" There is something homely and appealing about these Fray Bentos Pies. The height of my Nana's culinary expertise was to serve us one of these. It's real comfort food. But.....If Argentina's navy had been built from the stuff the pie cans are made from, Mrs Thatcher would have been singing a very different song from the one she sang over the Falklands! They would have been unsinkable. Doing the Can-Can or Can-Can't ? It is very nearly impossible to get the cans open without maiming yourself or distributing grease and gravy on the floor walls and ceiling of your kitchen ... more

Advantages Advantages LOADS, tastes excellent, smells fabulous, dead cheap & easy to make

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None at all

I went to my mate's house for tea last Friday night and her mum served up a Fray Bentos Steak & Kidney pie. I hadn't had one of these for quite a long time (well, about three months or so) and now I think I'm going to have to eat them all the time as I'd forgotten how lovely they are. They are the perfect 'winter' food as I think they are really lovely to eat on freezing cold winter nights when you get back home, stick your pie in the oven, and settle down to eat it in front of the telly. My mate's mum served us up ours last week with mash, carrots, broccoli and lashings of gravy, but when ... more

Advantages Advantages A quick and easy meal.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing major

What is it about the Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie that is still so appealing? Every time we switch the television or the radio on we are bombarded with dietary advice, no chips, lower our fat intake, reduce the amount of salt that we consume and I am sure that the Fray Bentos pie contravenes every healthy eating schedule known to man. In the major supermarkets expect to pay a penny or two over the £1.50 mark for a large (425g) pie but take a look around your local discount store and you may well find them on the shelves for a good 30p cheaper. It seems that the iconic Fray Bentos pie is ... more

Advantages Advantages Very Simple To Cook, Very Tasty

Disadvantages Disadvantages Tends To Stick To The Tin

I have decided to be brave and write a review on Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Tinned Pies. When it comes to pies nothing, in my humble opinion, can beat a Fray Bentos Tinned Pie, especially when it is a Steak and Kidney one. "TINNED PIES!" I hear you all shouting out in disgust, surely not, it must be a typing error, but please don't reach for that Not Helpful quite yet. For those of you who prefer to spend a few hours each evening in the kitchen with a rolling pin and your work surfaces covered in flour then my hat goes out to you. However the reality is after a long day at work I really do ... more

Advantages Advantages Lovely pies ready in 30mins

Disadvantages Disadvantages tin can be hard to open

As my girlfriend and myself haven't had our own house for long, doing our own shopping is still a very new experience. Until we got our own house, i wouldn't dream of looking round supermarkets. The other day in Asda I happened to notice that Fray Bentos pies were on offer, they were only £1. I never thought you could buy a pie that comes in a tin! I was pretty amazed at these, the picture on the front made it look lovely. All i had ever eaten from a tin were things like baked beans or tuna. The packaging is fairly simple, there is a picture of a slice of the pie, with the Fray Bentos logo at ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap, edible, easy to cook for the lazy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Messy to remove from tin

These are the "pot noodle" of pies. They come in a tin (??) Now you would ask yourself: "Who would want to eat a pie out of a tin?" And it has to be said, its a bugger to get out of the tin. But its not half bad, actually. To cook it, you simply take the top off the tin with a can opener, and stick the tin in the oven for 45 minutes. It does come out with a lovely crispy pastry, although in the manner of most flaky pastry pies, it all collapses shortly afterwards. As the pie has no base to it, simply a nice big crispy flaky top, with considerable suet type pastry around the sides, underneath ... more

    Advantages Advantages fair size

Disadvantages Disadvantages hard to open, bits of metal in pie, not nice :(

After watching an episode of early doors where they make a big fuss out of having a fray bentos pie, I decided to try one of these for my tea one night BIG MISTAKE!! Got it home, that was no bother, and set about trying to open the thing. At first, I thought there would be some sort of key like on tinned corn beef but no such luck. Testing out the tin opener simply broken the opener! I lost 2 good openers to one tin of pie, and the thing still wasnt opened. In the end we used, wait for it, a screwdriver and hammer!!! We literally hammered the screwdriver around the edge to finally get enough ... more

Advantages Advantages makes a nice meal

Disadvantages Disadvantages probably only enough for two

Fray Bentos Steak and Kidney Pie, Well now your talking, these pies have been one of my favourites for many a year, If your quick, shoot down to Morrison's before finishing reading this review, as they are doing a Two for £2.00 offer at the moment. A delicious pie, its contents are made of formed and shaped meats, in a succulent rich gravy ( which is now made with Oxo, ). Probably not one for the traditionalist , who will only accept real Steak and genuine ingredients of Beef products, As upon reading its ingredient contents, you will discover its more Pork meat than Beef, surround by beef ... more

Advantages Advantages A very easy meal prepared by even a widower

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can"t be bought here in South Africa

I am a widower living in Johannesburg South Africa for the last 20+ years before coming to S.A my wife & I used & enjoyed Fray Bentos pies after coming here we continued to buy & enjoy the pies but a number of years ago they ceased to be sold here. A friend coming here on holiday has brought me a couple I am now enjoying one & find that they are still as good as they ever were in fact maybe better. Why can't you on the way back from Uruguay drop a container or two of these delicious edibles. The largest supermarkets here are owned & very eficiently run by Pick & Pay.I will try to keep the ... more
