When the Internet really took hold of the UK market in the second half of the 1990's, the thing that probably drove the massive increase in popularity was the product offering promised by Freeserve, who were the first internet service provider "to offer a mass market, subscription-free Internet access service for the cost of a local phone call". The quote comes from Freeserve's own website - http://www.freeserve.com/ - which goes on to boast "Within five months Freeserve had opened one million customer accounts and became the clear market leader, revolutionising the home Internet access market ... more

Advantages Advantages Ummm, errr, pass on that one!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor service

Ah! Freeserve. They used to be the king of the internet some years back I believe. Not so now with vast competition. When I first came to the internet, about 18 months ago, I was on Freeserve, not by choice, but because my computer package was a much wanted present and the internet was already set up on it for me. At the time there were few, if any, ISPs offering free internet AND free calls to any great extent. Of course there has now been a mini revolution in that area and I have since changed ISP two or three times to enable me to have a completely free 24/7 set up, as I have now with NTL ... more

Advantages Advantages 15mb free webspace, 3 sign-up options, unlimited email addresses, newsgroup access

Disadvantages Disadvantages the service disconnects you after 2 hours of being online

I’ve been using Freeserve as my ISP since soon after it was launched. It is very easy to get hold of and install - grab a CD from your local Dixons/Currys/PC World, and it comes with all the software you need, such as the latest version of Internet Explorer. Or alternatively, if you already have an internet connection, you can sign up at their website - http://www.freeserve.com. Incidentally, I still use the site as my homepage; it’s got the latest news headlines, showbiz news etc etc, with more sections being added to the site all the time. It’s even got exam revision help ... more

Advantages Advantages Good Packages & Extras

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Prices

First off I’d like to ask a question…why are ISP's calling them selves, FREEserve, FREEservers, FREEonline? There not free at all! At the time of writting this originally I was not with Freeserve but I have now come back to Freeserve as they provide one hell of a lot better service! Let us begin! Packages: Freeserve has 3 pay plans that gives you time on the Internet. They are: . Freeserve Anytime. Freeserve Anytime is £13.99 a month. Over the last few months this price has gone up by £1 but this is because they have recently installed more servers.. to cope! For your £13.99 You ... more

    Advantages Advantages Portal

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Speed

Freeserve is very higly rated in some ways it deserves credit in other ways it doesn't. The website is great and has everythin you need from the web on one page. The new unmetered service is unfair because it only provides for BT customers. The service isn't all that fast. It has the usual stuff from an isp- free webspace, email chat etc. The website is too slow at peak times so beware!! The help section needs to be more helpful and add new features to it. If you use the internet a lot freeserve isn't always the best option in terms of price. ... more

    Advantages Advantages Free

Disadvantages Disadvantages can run up quite a phone bill

Freeserve is a nice simple free isp, you simply pay for your phone calls and thats it. It was te first free isp that got heavily publisized when it came out in 99. Though the advertising bar in outlook express, and start up page in internet explorer can seem quite anoying, it is very simple to choose not to view them. On the whole, freeserve is good if you are not planning on using the internet much and using email, but if you like to surf for long hours it s probably better if you pay for a no phone bill isp (freeserve offers its own free after 6 and at weekends for £5.99 a month, bt also ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages All of the above.

I have used freeserve quite a lot at work, it's one of many ISP's my employer uses. For starters, I cannot understand why they are called FREEserve, they aren't free. You have to pay the cost of a local call to connect! I am sure the Trades Description Act prevents companies from using such titles. Apart from the misleading name, I have noticed a great deal of problems with freeserve. Here are a few of them: 1) Account names: An account name is after the @ in an email address, you can't simply have yourname@freeserve.co.uk. You have to have firstname@lastname.freeserve.co.uk, which is really ... more

Advantages Advantages Substantial call savings without changing telcomms supplier

Disadvantages Disadvantages About to get dearer. Limited to 2 hours at a time, but you can always redial.

Having been a Freeserve user from fairly early on (an escapee from Compuserve - $9.95US for 5 hours a month??) I have found their service to be as good (or should that be as bad) as any other non-subscription ISP. Many ISP's are able to take advantage of BT Offpeak Surftime, and Freeserve is one of them. In three months of usage, I have used the equivalent of £90 worth of local off-peak call time, all for £18. Freeserve did start off with the good intention of rebating you £3/quarter as well, but this has been disbanded after Jan 2001 - see below for further charges on the way. Signing up was ... more

Advantages Advantages usually reliable; no access charge

Disadvantages Disadvantages don't use the ropey CD!

Freeserve started in a blaze of glory, failed to live up to the hype and is now rallying again. It's not back to the first rate service it achieved in those heady early months, but hopefully it'll get there. Of course, if it's overwhelmed by defectors from the Lineone debacle returning to their Freeserve accounts, we can expect things to get ropey again for a little while. My main gripe against Freeserve right now is that it's pay 24/7 service is only open to BT customers. BT suck and I'd rather have my toenails pulled out with pliers than give them any of my cash. So what's with all the ISPs ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good conections.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad service.

I used to use Freeserve's regular sevice, but i don't any more. This is because I used their webspace to sell a few computer games. They locked my account, so I emailed them to ask why, they wouldn't tell me. This was thrustrating because I had no idea why I couldn't recieve any mail. I never found out the reason or got my email account back. I then had to email all the people I knew (lots!) and tell them that my address is no longer working. This is very annoying. I have never used Freeserve since and will never use them. I may have broken the terms and conditions, but it wasn't intentional ... more
