The S5000 is a very good value version of the Nikon 5700. It has fantastic zoom (10x optical) although close-up focusing on anything more than 1x doesn't really work, even on macro. Generally, autofocusing and auto light metering in normal use takes about a second (typical for a modern digi camera). Trying to take a photo on a moving subject is therefore tricky if the subject is moving away (or towards) you, as it focuses at the point you initiated ...
...detailed background (e.g. an insect on a leaf against the garden) can be tricky because if the insect is too small it tries to focus on the background instead. These types of photo usually take a couple of minutes because it needs 5 or 6 attempts (re-zooming, refocusing, moving closer/further away) and is probably the weakest part of the camera. Often, the thing has flown away by the time you've finished. If it hasn't, the picture is fantastic, though. ...

I bought my S5000 in 2004 because I wanted a better digital camera than my 1.3 Mega-pixel Casio QV-5500SX, I also wanted something which would be similar to use as my film SLR cameras. The camera looks great, almost like a SLR. A 10x optical zoom (37-370mm equivalent), every exposure mode you could wish for, & fabulous battery life were big plus points. However, the camera doesn't really deliver "the goods"…. The camera can produce 1, 2, 3, & 6 ...
...the 6 MP images show no more detail than its 3 MP images. ISO sensitivity ranges from 160 (Auto ISO) to 800 (1 MP mode), but the noise reduction applied to images is quite aggressive (especially at higher image sizes). Reducing the image sharpening to "soft" helps, but doesn't eradicate the unsightly image artefacts that the camera produces. As a first digital camera you can't go far wrong with this one. It is easy to use and to learn with a detailed instruction book. This is NOT an SLR although it looks very similar. However, accessory wide angle and telephoto lenses are avaialble (at very reasonable prices) that screw into the filter thread. It is also possible to take short "movie" sequences and add sound comments to your pictures. The camera is light and compact and hence slips ...
...Bearing in mind that this is only a 3 megapixel camera, it is quite capable of producing good A4 size prints. As I run a music pub website I wanted a camera that I could use without flash indoors, but I didn't want to spend silly money. I saw the results from my friends camera and was hooked. This camera has variable megapixel settings (1, 2, 3 or 6) and variable ISO speeds (auto, 200, 400 or 800) the maximum speed of 800 can only be used at the 1megapixel setting, the other ISO settings can be used at any of the megapixel settings. The 800 ISO setting ...
...very dark areas it can result in bluring from camera shake and movement of the subject. One thing I did like on this model is that it has an autofocus lamp which the S7000 doesn't have. The 22X zoom (10X optical & 2.2X digital) is very useful and was another of the features that prompted me to buy it. The camera comes with a 16MB memory card which on the lowest quality setting will only take 33 pictures so I have replaced it with a 128MB XD picture ...
