So why pay £250 for a Gaggia Classic espresso machine. If your a coffee lover and you have been to Starbucks, Caffe Nero or one of those other trendy coffee bars, when you open the door and you get that whiff of the fresh ground coffee being served to people lounging ... ...do the same as the Gaggia Classic, they make a shot of espresso and froth milk. Yes you can buy cheaper coffee machines, filter, stove top, percolator and cafe-tier but these are not pump driven machines and you need a pump driven machine to make a real espresso.

...(at least 15 bar). The Gaggia Classic does this in spades.
Features of the Classic
The Classic lies towards the top end of Gaggia's product line, and its features show that. Starting with the basics, not only is the metal body beautiful, but it’s functional too. The metal body helps to retain heat better so contributes to the standard of espresso. Also it lets the top of the machine act as a cup heater, so that when you make the espresso you make ... ...part of the machine. The Gaggia features a brass and chrome plated filter holder that weighs in at over 1lb of metal! The advantage of this is again in the heat retention. Heat is the key to good coffee. Cheaper models use aluminium and feel really flimsy. Just as a side point, the replacement cost of that part is a whopping £90!!
The Gaggia also features a steam valve for frothing milk. More on this in a bit.
Another unique feature is the ability ...

Advantages: Looks good and makes superb coffee. Disadvantages: Frustrating to use and occasionally verging on the dangerous.
...the domestic machines - the Gaggia Classic - as it's a well-built basic machine with none of the frills which rarely get used and have the potential to cause problems. It will also make a cappuccino, but not a filter coffee. The Classic is also one of the most powerful domestic machines - water is forced through the ground coffee with 17.5 bar of pressure. To give you some idea of how powerful this is, my central heating operates at 1.5 bar.
An ... ...see from the picture the Gaggia Classic is a big machine and requires a large footprint on the working surface. It's also very heavy and not something you should move without thought. Because the water tank can be filled from the top it's unwise to place it under a wall unit and you'll need approximately 40cm from the wall to the front of the machine because of the holder for the ground coffee. The width is not so critical at around 25cm but do remember ...

Advantages: Quick, simple, sturdy, stylish Disadvantages: Can lose important 'bits' if not careful
So - I lost the whoosit for steaming the milk properly and now I only use the coffee making part, heating the milk up in the microwave. But, in the Gaggia's defence, I have had it for a long, long, time (5 years plus), moved house with it as well, hence the loss of the whoosit, and I still couldn\'t get through the day without the wonderful coffee it makes for me every morning. I could also replace the whoosit direct from Gaggia's site, but I have ... ...machine daily. It needs a good descale every now and then - I just use the same stuff you would use for a kettle, brew it through a few times and then rinse a lot, but I\'m pretty sure it came with some descaling instructions as well. Its also worth using filtered water to keep it happy, but that goes for every machine you can buy. If you are comparing this with the 'pod coffee' machines bear in mind how much you will use it and how much cheaper ...

Quick review of Gaggia Classic
A strong machine with a heavy filter that will not break too easily, it takes just a couple of minutes to warm up and has high pressure to make lots of froth for cappuchinos. Idal for everyday use for an independant who can't be enticed to pay Starucks prices ...
Advantages: Looks great, heavy duty, relatively easy to use, authentic Italian, Good customer service Disadvantages: Can be messy
...which I love. The Gaggia logo badge finishes the machines look well. I have the polished chrome plated version of this machine. It has big solid illuminated switches which are clearly laid out on the front of the machine.
In using this machine I notice the high quality of the components and the machine overall. The chrome plated solid brass filter holder has a reassuringly heavy feel to it. Being solid brass the components hold the heat very well. ... ...- £295 according to the Gaggia UK website. Selfridges sell this machine for about £275. The Currys online store also has this machine at a constantly fluctuating price. The John Lewis online store stocks it for £299. You may wish to consider a reconditioned machine available direct from Gaggia’s UK online shop at a much reduced price of £170; they also stock the machine new for £295.
I would recommend this machine to anyone wanting the best quality ...

...a coffee maker like the Gaggia before, but was given one as a wedding present last year. We absolutely love it and it looks fantastic on our kitchen bench, but my comments on the usefulness of this item are based on the fact that we're novices to the home-espresso game. If you already own a machine like this and are looking for a new one, want a highly technical review or worship caffeine as a demi-god, then you'd probably be better off reading someone ... ...coffee machines seem to be an awful lot of trouble for what you get out of them. There always seems to be vast amounts of mess after use, and two tiny cups of warm-ish espresso are all we have to show for our trouble! We haven't always been able to get a good froth using the steam nozzle to make cappuccinos.
Although not the most expensive on the market, this is a lot of money to spend for an item that makes coffee products. We've used it more as ...

Advantages: Pure perfection Disadvantages: A lot of work for a small cup of coffee....
Ive had my Gaggia for a good while now...when I first got it it was in constant use...these days it usually doesnt get used much during the week...reason being that there is a lot to clean up after and not much time to do it....easier to make a cup of instant....thought of course its not any where near the same...just a matter of lifestyle...But at the weekends it comes into its own...and is in constant use...
Once you get over the initial 'how ... ...and 'Coffee Bars' use the Gaggia make too....so that says a lot....Italians are very fussy about their coffee, if its not right they wont drink it...even when I have been to Italy the make they use is mostly Gaggia too....there again, that says a lot too....I would most certainly recommend it....it certainly beats hubby standing behind the kitchen door....making all manner of ridiculous noises to stress the point that your brewing real coffee....just ...

Brilliant espresso maker
Use to have a Gaggia Cubika but this new one is so much better. Has a good heavy well built feel to it .
Bought it from the house of Fraser £199 with a set of cups.1/3/08
Had to run a couple of litres of water through first to clean out the system.
Also found out where the flat plastic went (under drip tray) which is easy to remove without taking the stainless steel pipe off.
Filling with water is a piece of cake compared to the Cubika.I use Mineral water as a preference.
The steam nozzle froths the milk well and it's easy to make an excellent cappuccino.
What more can you say ...

Advantages: The best espresso that can be made at home. And a very good brand of machine. Disadvantages: Very hard to get the spare parts.
...is why I chose the gaggia classic it is a strong machine with a heavy filter that will not break too easily, it takes just a couple of minutes to warm up and has a high pressure to make lots of lovely froth for those cappuchino days. the water tank holds enough water to last a couple of days when making coffee for three or four and gaggia even make their own descalor to use on the machine which makes cleaning it easy. The only one downfall I found ... ...even ended up phoning the gaggia head office in Italy to eventualy get the part that I needed. I went for this machine after the barista (sp?) at our local cafe recommended it. Anyway it makes much better coffee compared to my previous machine. The piece of plastic mentioned in the other (and may I say excellent) review but not in the instructions, is rectangular with the corners cut off and goes I believe underneath the top plate of the drip tray and drip tray itself. The heating time from switch on to read to use is six minutes, by which ...
