Advantages Advantages A great activity place for babies

Disadvantages Disadvantages They will eventually escape

"What is a baby nest?" I hear you ask ... Imagine an inflatable ring, similar to one you might give a small child in a swimming pool, put it inside a colourful fabric sleeve and put a "floor" in the hole. Voila! - One baby nest. But what do you do with it? Put your baby in it of course. Basically the ring encourages your bundle of joy (or any other names you decide to call your child) to sit up. At first, looking at your child in the nest you might decide that they look a little uncomfortable, but soon they get the idea that with all the support that the nest provides that they can sit up by ... more

Advantages Advantages Soft, supportive and stimulating play area for young babies

Disadvantages Disadvantages Older siblings may also be attracted to it, takes up a lot of space

The Galt Playnest was one of the very first baby items we bought when I was expecting my oldest son, almost eight years ago now. We actually picked this up second-hand from a car boot sale for a fiver, after the seller convinced us that this one item we would be glad to have. Later discovering that these sell for between £25-£30 new, we were pleased to have found such a bargain. The Playnest is essentially an inflatable rubber ring which is covered with a really vibrant hardwearing cotton cover to create a raised area with a circular centre for a young baby to sit in relative comfort. Advantages Advantages Interesting textures/graphics that appeal to babies/ baby can sit propped up.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limiting concept/not portable/quite large.

I registered slight surprise when I looked at the 'favorite five toys' here on ciao, and found that the galt playnest popped up at number three. Not mindbending loud yell-emitting surprise, but more of a slight squeak on the surprise richter scale. Reason? Well, I wouldn't personally call this item a great toy. A good toy? Yes. A sometimes quite useful toy? Yes. But a truly great toy? Nope. It's got quite a few drawbacks, and some of the plus points about it can easily be found in other combinations of other, often cheaper, and certainly more portable pieces of equipment. Before I get to all ... more

~@~ GALT PLAYNEST AND GYM ~@~ “A soft supporting multi-sensory environment for baby, Playnest features a fun farm scene with the Gym as the sky above.” This is the introduction as written on the instructions. The Playnest and Gym is for babies from birth to about 8 months, then the playnest alone can be used for older children as they wish. Basically the ‘Playnest’ is an inflatable ring which sits inside a canvas, durable and machine washable, cover with farm scenes on. Advantages Advantages colourful, stimulating, safe

    Disadvantages Disadvantages expensive

We bought the Galt Playnest when we were expecting our baby as it had been highly recommended to us by a relative who had this for their baby. We bought it from Tesco Direct for £24.99, which at the time I thought was pretty expensive but, having used it extensively, I believe it to be reasonably good value for money. The nest itself is like a giant rubber ring, which is exactly what the insert is. This needed to be blown up manually, which my husband managed without too much effort (but a considerable amount of moaning!). This is then covered with a fabric covering which is largely nylon and ... more

    Advantages Advantages Brilliant

Disadvantages Disadvantages Needs a touch more padding on the base

When my daughter was newborn (she's now seven) I really struggled to make ends meet, and spare cash for toys and activities was rare . I compensated by going to the local flea market and buying many items secondhand. I was overjoyed when I picked up a Galt Baby Nest for £3, considering they normally cost £23.99. The first thing I did when I got home was strip off the colourful outer cover and stick it in the washing machine - luckily, this was as simple as unzipping it, and reading the handy label with washing instructions that was included. It's a small thing to pick up on, but I loved that ... more

Advantages Advantages Portable, washable, interesting, safe.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive, hard to assemble, few months of use

You probably won’t have heard of a Galt baby nest unless you’ve got a baby in the family. I must admit it wasn’t high on my list of shopping priorities before I had my daughter but I now consider it to be one of my top three ‘must-haves’. The Galt baby nest comes in two types. You can buy the nest just on its own which costs about £25 or with a play gym over the top for £40. I have seen them sold in Tesco, Argos and Blooming Marvellous (catalogue for Mothers to be). I also believe that they’re available from Mothercare. If you are strapped for cash you can also buy them secondhand on Ebay from ... more

Advantages Advantages A bright, colourful, toy that keeps your baby safe and entertained

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit bulky to store away at the end of the day

My baby was recently bought the Galt Playnest, and I am so impressed with it that I wanted to write and share it with other Ciao members! The Playnest is an inflatable ring, measuring 39” (100 cm), with a brightly coloured and textured cover. The cover has a quilted centre for extra padding and is fully machine washable. The object of the Playnest is to provide a self contained resting and play area for babies and toddlers (the packaging says 0m+, and I should imagine that you could use it until your baby starts walking). Very young babies can lie down in the partially inflated ring, and their ... more

Advantages Advantages good for helping baby learn to sit up

Disadvantages Disadvantages not so good for newborns

I first came across this product when Charlotte was learning to sit up on her own. Mooching round Mothercare one day I saw this and thought it would be ideal to sit Charlotte in so she could play. Also it would stop my cushions getting soggy, puked on etc etc. Basically it is a ring which baby sits in, or rolls about in without coming to harm. It measures 85cm in diameter (33" in old money), and is an inflatable plastic ring which fits inside a material cover. (small tip here inflate the ring when inside the cover - you'll save yourself a lot of time!!) The material is all different colours ... more
