Whenever I head off on my holidays, I pause momentarily in the Dixons Duty Free shop looking at the handheld game consoles that might help while away a few hours on the beach, or help that long flight pass a little more quickly. This has been going on for about six years and I have not been sufficiently inspired to part with my hard-earned.......Until Now. At this point I should warn you that this opinion comes from someone who is not a serious gamer, but enjoys the opportunity to enjoy a good game every now and again......that might change though. In March, Nintendo in their ultimate wisdom ... more

As my four children wrote their letters to Santa (well three really, the eldest just told us what he wanted), top of their lists were Gameboy Advance (GBA) SPs. Which is strange really, as they already possessed ordinary GBAs, which were working perfectly well, but as with their Mum, they absolutely needed the newest version of their favourite technology. Anyhow, fast forward to Christmas day, and to their delight Santa had managed to secure one for each of them, all in different colours. Advantages Advantages Screen light, rechargable battery, compact design, backward compatibility

Disadvantages Disadvantages Battery life worn a bit by light

I've owned my SP for nearly three years now. This console was released in Europe over three years ago, on 28th March 2003 and in America just a week before while in Japan it was released in February 2003. This console seems to have been overshadowed by the DS recently, but it's still well worth buying. Its design is a big advantage over the original bulkier design of the Gameboy advance. The console features a flip-top design with the screen on the top half and controls on the lower half. Closed over, it measures 3.3" high, 3.23" wide and the depth is 0.96". Its compact, light design makes it ... more

I got my GBA SP over a year ago, i still have my old game boy colour and didnt bother with the first GBA that nintendo brought out for us. I wasn't too fussed for it, to be honest. Once i did get it for £80 with a game included, i actually couldnt put the thing down for hours on end. So, thats how i got mine out the way, lets get down to the review. Big? Small? - The gameboy advance SP is around the same size as the old gameboys in length, and square in width. There is 2 panals, one is with the buttons and the other is for the screen. The buttons consist of the old style D-pad, start and ... more

Nintendo’s grip on the home consoles may not be as tight as it once was but its domination over the handheld market is still strong. The original GameBoy was launched in 1988 and has gone through a slow but worthy evolution to colour, pocket size and even having little cameras attached to it. There have been many competitors that have tried to dislodge it. The Game Gear by Sega introduced a colour screen but it was marred by poor battery life and distinct lack of quality games. The SNK Neo Geo just didn’t have the software library and, most recently, the Japan only WonderSwan Colour has ... more

A Game Boy Color user of several years' standing, I'd promised myself a Game Boy Advance as soon as I could spare the cash. In mid-February that moment finally arrived, and I headed for my local branch of Game with payslip burning a hole in my pocket. Once in the store, though, I changed my mind. Was I struck by the sudden realisation that I ought to invest the money in a pension plan instead, or perhaps donate it to a worthy cause? Ho ho, not likely. No - I had seen a poster advertising the launch of the new, improved Game Boy Advance SP at the end of March, and I had fallen in love. So ... more

Let me tell you a little story, a true story that happened in my life. When the Gameboy Advance SP first came out, I was among the first people to rush down to my nearest game store, barge all the little kids out of my ways thanks to my being older, bigger and chunkier, and purchasing one of the first lot of Gameboy Advance SP's. Mine was pre-ordered so I didn't really have to barge, but anyway back to my story! I came home and had my very own silver little handheld gaming device and a copy of F-Zero, so yes I was very very happy. I played it for a while, next day I got bored of the game but ... more

~ In the beginning ~ So where shall I begin, the GBA an acronym for the Game Boy Advanced has become the worlds biggest selling hand held game console. With out Nintendo in the market place the gaming industry would just break even with sales because Nintendo sells more than any other game platform company on earth. ~ A brief history ~ Nintendo started a game revolution, the first hand held game platform with all competitors unable to compete. The first game boy, now known as the game boy classic brought kids all over the world hours of play, and parents hours of quiet – well that was if they ... more

I've had my Gameboy Advance SP for a few years now and whilst others have replaced theirs with a Nintendo DS, I'm still happy to play mine, although it is becoming increasingly difficult to get any decent games for it without delving into the shady world of ebay trading. I was given the 'Mario Limited Edition' version of the GBASP as a gift. The bottom section (where the button are) is silver and the top (where the screen is) is red. When closed, the red part has a large red 'M' on it to signify Mario, I assume. I was impressed with the way the GBASP looked. It was much better looking than its ... more
