Advantages: Many many functions, training centre info Disadvantages: Info overload, price, rubbish standard map
...had been hankering after a Garmin cycle computer to replace them ever since he found out about them! Finally, he took the plunge and shelled out £250 on the Garmin Edge 305 with cadence and heart rate monitor (cadence is RPM for your feet while pedalling, by the way).
It arrived a couple of weeks ago and after playing with it for a short while was promptly installed on one of his bikes. The 305 does absolutely tons of different stuff, and to be ... ...more detailed than the standard Garmin map included with the package, which only seems to feature major roads.
It was pretty easy to follow the plotted route, and the map that he created also imported the information about elevation, so even though we hadn't cycled out that way with the Edge on, he could see the upcoming hills before we reached them. Didn't tell me about them mind, but I struggled up them none the less!
The elevation info makes ...

...communications. And then came the Garmin Edge 305. It doesn't have wires. In fact, it doesn't even need a sensor on the wheel - instead it relies on the Global Positioning System of satellites to track your position, distance, speed, time and altitude. But it doesn't stop there. Oh no, that wouldn't be complicated enough for the modern world. Not content with the usual statistics, Garmin included the ability to monitor and record heart rate and pedal ... ...it's probably worth mentioning that Garmin do make a "lesser" device, the Edge 205 which doesn't have the pedal cadence or heart-rate monitoring capability, which means it's still a fine cycle comp. The Edge 305 bundled with both heart-rate monitoring and cadence sensor weighs in at about £250, while the Edge 205 (which has neither heart-rate of cadence) costs a more palatable £150. If I were considering one of these from scratch, I would absolutely ...

Why I chose the Garmin Edge 205
****************************************
Being a bit of a gadget 'freak' I stumbled across one of these on a cycling accessories website but instantly dismissed it because of its price tag of £149.99. Being a recreational cyclist who would never enter a cycling competition of any discipline there was no way I could justify the price.
However, after being introduced to the Fat fingers concept on Ebay, and seeing ... ...Features of the Garmin Edge 205

I won't go in to too much detail about what the Garmin can do because all this can be found directly off the website, and as with all my reviews I prefer to focus on what the product is like to use rather than note down all the specifications.
In summary the Garmin can be used:
As a standard cycle computer showing current speed, time, distance and calories burned
As ...

I'm a keen mountain biker and I live in South Wales.
Having used numerous cycle computers, I decided to go the whole hog and get something that would enable me not only to work out how far I'd been and at what speed, but also enable me to work out how much climbing I'd done, and to plot my route when I got home. So I ordered an Edge 205.
For a month or so all seemed fine. The edge was easy to charge and the comprehensive manual was easy to get ... ...and the display clear. Reception was good, and I was plotting routes like a good un. Then out of the blue, no longer could I download any info' from the Edge onto my Pc. I sent it back, and a month or so later received a replacement.
By now winter had gone and spring was in the air. Leaves were appearing on the trees, but all was not well. As the leaves and buds blossomed, the reception on my "new" edge got worse and worse. Over a typical four hour ...

...updating the software from the garmin site it's been all working well. Since people suggested that the review is a bit short for their liking I thought I add some more useful information. Yes, I tried to keep it short because quite a few reviews I read on ciao just ramble on and put me to sleep. Anyway, I had the garmin a bit longer now and can judge better on the useful features, I think. To upload courses from online (free!!) services such as course ... ...nav on the bike. Whereas the map feature itself is pretty bad (you only see your own track but no other features), the uploaded course definitely directs you into the right direction. It shsows the direction to take at every stored waypoint and gives you an overview of the part of the route you are on and where in relation to the route you are. I went from Glasgow to Edinburgh (city centre, and I don't know Edinburgh) following my route without any ...
