Advantages Advantages Many many functions, training centre info

Disadvantages Disadvantages Info overload, price, rubbish standard map

My other half is what you'd call a keen cyclist - he cycles about 25 miles a day commuting to work, and frequently goes on weekend training rides too. He's got a couple of cycle computers that show things like the time, distance, speed, and similar, but had been hankering after a Garmin cycle computer to replace them ever since he found out about them! Finally, he took the plunge and shelled out £250 on the Garmin Edge 305 with cadence and heart rate monitor (cadence is RPM for your feet while pedalling, by the way). It arrived a couple of weeks ago and after playing with it for a short while ... more

It never ceases to amaze me how things get increasingly complicated over time. Cars, telephones, stereos, televisions... they've all become more complicated since they were first invented. Maybe I shouldn't be so surprised that the same has happened with cycle computers... Maybe I'm not surprised but I am certainly amazed. Twenty years ago, I bought a cycle "computer" for my bike. I bolted it to my front fork and attached a pin to one of my spokes. Properly set up, every rotation of my front wheel caused the counter to click round a notch and, using an array of internal gears, it calculated ... more

Advantages Advantages wireless, accurate, can analyse data, water proof - Excellent

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes a loss of GPS signal, still quite expensive

Why I chose the Garmin Edge 205 **************************************** Being a bit of a gadget 'freak' I stumbled across one of these on a cycling accessories website but instantly dismissed it because of its price tag of £149.99. Being a recreational cyclist who would never enter a cycling competition of any discipline there was no way I could justify the price. However, after being introduced to the Fat fingers concept on Ebay, and seeing the bargains a close mate of mine was enjoying I decided to scour the Ebay search engine in hope of finding one of these at a 'reasonable' price. All ... more

    Advantages Advantages none

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Delicate, poor reception.

I'm a keen mountain biker and I live in South Wales. Having used numerous cycle computers, I decided to go the whole hog and get something that would enable me not only to work out how far I'd been and at what speed, but also enable me to work out how much climbing I'd done, and to plot my route when I got home. So I ordered an Edge 205. For a month or so all seemed fine. The edge was easy to charge and the comprehensive manual was easy to get through. The functions on the Edge were easy to use, and the display clear. Reception was good, and I was plotting routes like a good un. Then out of ... more

4 Stars Quick review of Garmin Edge 305 by drewk1 18/11/2008
Fantastic gadget for the cyclist. GPS tracking to record where you cycle and data which can be uploaded to various programs or the garmin motionbased web site. It can monitor your heartrate and set target heartrate zones to help improve fitness.

Advantages Advantages Training data, lots of features

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price

I bought the 205 second hand due to the steep price when it's new. I think I've been quite lucky and it's been hardly used by the previous owner. Battery seems to last well over 7 - 8 hours between charges. The sattelite reception is good but sometimes takes a few minutes when finding reception. It's been a great motivation having it on the bike. It's great to have a mount on the commuting bike and one on the weekend bike. The map on the trainig centre software is poor, but you can download the sport tracks software free and that ties in with google maps. Haven't even tries all the feature yet ... more
