...to your map and compass. Garmin have now installed WAAS into most of their GPS systems. WAAS stands for Wide Area Augmentation System, which Garmin claim that GPS will then be able to receive accuracy up to 3 metres. WAAS are basically 3 geostationary satellites and a complex network of ground stations. In the Europe, the equalvent of WAAS will be EGNOS. Every year EGNOS/WAAS will be released by governments after testing, but since 2000, it still ...
...8mb,16mb or 24mb. The Garmin eTrex Legend ------------------------------ This is the GPS i own. Working in an outdoors store (Blacks), owning a GPS is handy in giving advice to customers about which GPS will be suitable for their use. First off, being a mountain climber and long distance walker, I wanted a GPS that would suit my needs for programming long distance walks. As explained earlier, GPS use "Waypoints" in creating and following routes. ...

...of the models from Garmin and Magellan, the 2 most popular manufacturers of GPS units, I decided to go for the Garmin eTrex Legend. It would have been nice to have a digital compass as fitted to the top of the range Vista model, but that would have added 50% to the price and it also consumes more battery power. Having a digital compass means that you don't have to be moving to know where North is; however, you only have to take a dozen steps for ...
...also updated firmware from the Garmin website. The screen is quite small and only has a 4 level grey scale, but that seems quite up to the task. A colour version is available for about £300, but that was way over my budget. My first outing with the Legend found me constantly looking at the display as I was walking, amazed by how it recorded every twist and turn of the footpath. The OS grid reference of the GPS accurately positioned me according ...

I Don't Know Where I'd be Without it!

Advantages: Relatively cheap, robust, European basemap, small
Disadvantages: EGNOS not really available yet, serial not USB PC connectivity

...The batteries, Garmin states that the batteries should last up to 18 hours. Im not sure I have ever quite managed to get this long out of the batteries however, they do not constantly need replacing either. Using the map, especially scrolling around the map will use up a lot of batteries as will using the backlit display. But generally I have never found the batteries to run out too quickly. It would however be better if a rechargeable battery was ...
...The legend uses a black and white screen, there is a colour version available now but Im not sure how much it would add. It would be able to show the relief of the land, something the black and white is not able to do. But Im not convinced its quite worth the extra £100. I have never had any troubles with the screen being 4 level grey. Perhaps a colour screen would not work so well in sunlight, just like how colour mobiles are hard to read in sunlight. ...
