Advantages Advantages Good machines, good quality, efficient company.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive for those on a budget.

I work for a small, (very small) company. I'm known as the IT-guy there. Over the last two years, we've bought six computers from them. Most of them have been trouble free purchases. As youcan imagine, after buying six computers, I've gotten to know Gateway's procedures pretty well. One of the computers I bought from them came with the video card badly inserted - it meant that the monitor wouldn't work. I called Gateway's tech support, (which was closed - understandable at 11pm on a Sunday night). I had the option of being put through to their automated service, which I went through. I was ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor customer support and delivery

SEE END FOR UPDATED SECTION I got this new computer a couple of months ago; I decided to go with Gateway because they have a better reputation than most. I also looked at Novatech, but as I didn’t know much about them chose Gateway, as the prices for the spec I wanted were almost similar. When I was first looking a getting a new PC, I was looking at gateways, £999.99 deal, but was persuaded to buy the one I now have for 1180 (ish). I didn’t need much persuading as the system had nearly double the spec for only £180 pounds. For the money I got 1Ghz athlon processor, 256MB RAM, 40Gb ... more

Advantages Advantages very good tech. help line also can change your system to suit your need

Disadvantages Disadvantages can not see what you are buying

I first heard about Gateway computers a few years ago, when a friend of mine( a university computer programmer) recommended them to me. I was a bit wary at first, mainly because i did not fancy spending most of my hard earned cash on a new computer system, that i could not see or try before i decide to buy. I am currently using my third computer set up that i have bought from Gateway, and can honestly say that i have had no major problems at this moment. One of the good things that struck me about their web site, is that it is well laid out, you can look at computers for business or home ... more

When I first decided to purchase a PC three years ago, I was extremely daunted by the sheer amount of PC distributors that were available. Also, back then I was overwhelmed by the technicalities of PCs and I was scared that I wouldn't get the one to best suit my needs. However, I need not have worried as I as a friend recommended Gateway (previously Gateway 2000). I was a little hesitant at first because it was strictly mail order. However, a very friendly sales person advised me on the best package and within around a week I had a new PC delivered to my door. Assembly was, quite simply, a ... more

Advantages Advantages Reasonably well priced and good mix of components

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor after sales support

I have been using a Gateway for two years now, and despite the companies offer of trading in a computer for a new model after two years, its an offer which isn't enough for me to recommend a Gateway. In the beginning everything was rosy, the computer itself contained a good mix of components, and even today will play some of the newest games to a degree. Two days after setting up the system, the screen reduced itself to a minimum resolution and colour depth; an obvious graphics card problem. Endless calls to Gateways technical support hotline (who send you around in circles, and despite ... more

Advantages Advantages Affordable , Fast, Montly payments

Disadvantages Disadvantages Free service of AOL

My current computer which was 4 years old was getting old, just plain wearing out from so much usage. The performance was not what it use to be. My husband and I talked about someday purchasing a new computer but that is all it was "just talk." That was until I received a call from August a Gateway representative, she explained to me that I have been approved for a new computer from Gateway. I could customize my own computer anyway I wanted. With no money down and easy monthly payments. And a free years worth of service from AOL was included. We decided upon the Gateway Essential 500. It ... more

Advantages Advantages Prepared to help after the warranty expires

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some long telephone calls maybe

I have had a Gateway machine for two years now and I am well pleased with its performance. What I want to draw peoples attention to is Gateway's excellent aftersales support. I have, on a number of occassions, needed to get in touch with Gateway's technical support as the result of a number of technical problems. These "problems" have been a mixture of situations brought about by myself, like trying to use Norton System Works to "move" Microsoft Office from one small partician to a larger partician with more room, result...huge crash. The technicians at Gateways telephone help centre talked me ... more

Advantages Advantages helpful staff in the shop

Disadvantages Disadvantages terrible customer service/staff at Head Office

I bought a Gateway Computer a few months ago, because I had read good reviews on Gateway in PC Magazines. Well since I have had my PC I had endless problems with it. A continual illegal operation, system shutting down message keeps popping up, the CD rom packed up twice and alltogether I felt very let down by Gateway customer service or rather lack of! They are very keen to go as quickly as possible over the phone, quite often jumping the gun and expecting you to have a whole arsenal of tools at hand. Well I'm afraid I don't and I wouldn't say that patience is one of Gateway Staff's quality ... more

Advantages Advantages good website, decent products, solid build quality

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Over the course of time I have listened to friends and acquaintances complaining about this or that computer they bought. I've had my Gateway PC for about 5-6 years now without a single major problem. In fact, it's so old, it has one of the first Pentium II chips in it and "only" 6Gb hard disk space - How quaint I hear you cry! The two most common complaints for PC hardware seem to be delivery problems and (lack of) after sales support - price doesn't seem to come into AFTER they have bought it! Who want's to admit to buying an expensive computer that would have been cheaper elsewhere? Many of ... more

Advantages Advantages Free, high quality, technical support

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lengthy telephone calls

I have experienced 5 years of trouble-free computing with Gateway. During that time my machine has never had any hardware faults and any software glitches have been remedied quickly and efficiently by the Gateway customer service team. Customer services are available 6 days per week (until 10pm from Monday to Friday) and are accessed via a freephone number which connects you to the European Gateway HQ in Dublin. This allows you to participate in conference calls through which one engineer deals with several customers at the same time. This avoids wasting time whilst customers are carrying out ... more
