Advantages Advantages Free text messaging, cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Non-standard calls are expensive

After a mate bought a genie phone I was unsure about what it was all about so I thought it was worth a look into as my current BTCellnet tariff was costing me a fait bit each month. I am a member of genie online, basically there is FREE SMS there for me, and FREE text updates on football etc. so I knew the site well, and I knew what to expect. Clicking on the ‘Shop’ icon on the genie homepage I was sent straight to the shop homepage, and was pleasantly surprised that the words ‘text messaging’ were accompanied with the word ‘FREE’. Yes, FREE! On my BTCellnet tariff I paid 10p per text message ... more

Advantages Advantages Can send as many as you want.

Disadvantages Disadvantages No good for anonymous text messaging

Genie Microsoft Internet, what an invention! Life before Genie text messaging was devoid of all meaning. If you have already sampled the delights of this site then you will know where I’m coming from. An Internet page that allows you to send unlimited text messages every day to anywhere in the world. What more could you want, as a poor student like myself where even a ten pence text message has been known to break the bank! The service is instant, reliable and totally free. (Excluding the Internet call charge.) To use these services all that is required is that you sign up as a member ... more

Advantages Advantages Free WAP and SMS, cheap phones, good choice of tarriffs.Prompt (but strange) delivery.Good and prompt response from customer support via e-mail.

Disadvantages Disadvantages EXTORTIONATE telephone customer support charges.Lack of choice with phones.

...then I'll charge you ridiculous customer support charges. This is perhaps the only downside i can see to an otherwise very competitive service provider. It piggybacks through the BT Cellnet network. They provide pre-pay,contract and SIM-only deals for their network.I plumped for pre-pay... I bought my Siemens C-35i from the Genie website (note to other AOL browsers, you can't view their shop with the standard browser, you have to boot up IE instead!).It seemed like the deal of a lifetime,£69.99 for the phone plus free WAP and SMS use. "Wow",I thought;"I gotta get myself a piece of that". I ... more

Advantages Advantages Up to 600 Free texts per month and Free Wap

Disadvantages Disadvantages For the cost? None!

If you want to try out wap for FREE and at the same time get up to 600 FREE text messages a month, get yourself to www.genie.co.uk and order up a FREE Genie sim card from the mobile shop. Genie uses the BT Cellnet network so you also have access to their links for traffic delays etc. I get loads of junk email and about two weeks ago this offer was in one of them. I have been curious about wap but hadn’t really heard a lot to its advantage so I have delayed in getting a wap phone. However, I do send a lot of texts so I decided to check the offer out. I have been a member of the Genie site for ... more

    Advantages Advantages free sms/wap

Disadvantages Disadvantages £10 minimum top up every 30 days but is understandable due to free sms/wap

I fisrt heard about genie mobile in November and was disapointed to find out that they where only offering contract phones. By the first week of december 2000 they where offering a pay as you go variant with FREE SMS and WAP calls. FREE SMS and WAP calls is such an amazing deal to me as i use SMS a hell of a lot. All i have to do is put £10 of credit in every 30 days and then i can send as many text messages as i like as well as make £10 of calls. Any credit left over at the end of the 30 days is carried over which is also good. Genie uses the BT Cellnet network which has a good signal and ... more

    Advantages Advantages less time consuming

Disadvantages Disadvantages up to 24 hour delay

One thing i noticed about this particular "Genie" was that there customer care is unique. For a start they dont have you hanging on the phone with some idiot on the other end trying to find the answers. Instead you send in an email or have on line chat. They take about a day to get back to you but the answer is always there. At least this way you can still carry on with other things and get your problem sorted. A rather different way of doing things, but very well done. ... more

Advantages Advantages Certainly a trail blazer

    Disadvantages Disadvantages not always reliable

Many would describe Genie as a virtual godsend. In a lot of ways I would not disagree. In internet terms Genie are a long time player and I fell must be praised for their innovation if nothing else. They were one of the first to offer free sms and their WAP service if fairly faultless. I also feel that the whole companies philosophy has had at least a mild effect on the mobile phone market. Anyone who ever used the old site may well agree the new look Genie is certainly tidier. But there still appears to be a few bugs that I at least have experienced since the start. That is logging on, I seem ... more
