Advantages Advantages Plays well, feels great, sounds fantastic!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not cheap, could do with hard case supplying with it.

Yes, yes I know, yet another geetar review. But a man has to have a hobby and sheep farmers keep a watchful eye on their livestock these days. Anyone want to buy a pair of second hand wellies? Seriously, I've been after a USA built Gibson for some time now and decided to go for the SG Special in faded worn brown. This is the entry level for the legendary model (£645 in this case, though still expensive). Buying guitars online can save a LOT of money but it something of a lottery as you can get a real lemon sometimes. But as we'll see, I hit lucky this time. This parcel arrived at my door and I ... more

Advantages Advantages Great look, great sound and playability. Light

Disadvantages Disadvantages Quite expensive therefore not for beginners

Hello I am returning to Ciao after quite a few years! I thought I would start by reviewing what I regard as the best product I have ever purchased! I have been a guitar player over 6 years and play this guitar most days. Any technical words I use I will try to explain for people who do not play the guitar! Price I purchased a wine red Gibson SG Special for £500 about 4 years ago. However the price now seems to be ranging from around £600 to £800 at most online dealers. Therefore it is certainly not an ideal guitar for beginners, make sure you will stick at playing before buying one! Guitar ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's a Gibson!

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I know of...it's a Gibson!

I saw my first Gibson SG in the 80's when I went to see AC/DC during the For Those About to Rock tour (yes, unfortunately I am that old!). As I walked away from that gig I swore to myself that I would own one of those guitars one day. Twenty years later I finally realised my ambition when my brand new Gibson SG Special finally arrived on my doorstep. First the specifications: Two 490 humbucker pickups Mahogany body Rosewood fingerboard Dot inlays "Kluson" type machineheads. Available in Wine Red or Black The SG Special is the 'no-frills' little brother of the SG Standard, although most of the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Real Gibson Quality

Disadvantages Disadvantages Heart Stopping price tag

A colleague at work has one of these. Having fallen into a conversation about our axes and telling him about my Les Paul it was inevitable that we would end up round his house jamming and trying out each other's instruments. The SG Special is a budget version of the SG Standard but over £300 cheaper. The differences? Chrome hardware, dot fret markers instead of trapezoid, a soft gig bag instead of the hard case, no pickup covers and no binding on the neck or body. Otherwise there is no difference. The build quality, materials, electricals and finish are 100% Gibson. She is a fine looking ... more

Advantages Advantages Great to play, great price for a USA guitar!

Disadvantages Disadvantages little details mean it doesnt look as nice as the standard.

We've all been there, watching tv seeing artists with their expensive guitar and sighed. If only I could afford one of those. Most likely you've visited your guitar shop and had to think about settling for a korean/mexican guitar that just isn't that special USA produced one you wanted. Well let me introduce the Gibson SG special. Already a legend in its own right - established in the 60s now is the perfect time to buy one! For some reason there is a price drop meaning you can pick one of these babies up for around £600 new, not bad given it comes with a gig bag, and is of course a Gibson ... more

Advantages Advantages great build, plenty of sounds on offer, looks great

    Disadvantages Disadvantages no hard case

I always dreamed of owning a genuine Gibson Guitar. i decided to save some pennys and after a few hard months i had enough to start to look at some of the cheaper Gibson guitars and a visit to my local music store was in order! i looked at a few models but the SG special really stood out. it looked stunning and played like a dream. all the classic gibson sounds where there and the guitar is also very light. in the price range of £500-£599 this guitar should be top of most peoples list of guitars to try.. it has it all sound, looks build quality great action and has Gibson on the headstock! the ... more
