Advantages Advantages Great atmosphere, see your idols

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be expensive, may get a bum view!

Ah! Gig-going! Saw this category and thought “umm well, where do I start?” I could give a run down of past gigs I have been to (too many!), I could give a little of my gig-going history as others have done or stick to the “Member Advice” side and give tips and advice on the subject. So what shall I do?! I know! A bit of everything! I’m the grand old age of 34, pushing 35, now and I started going to gigs at the tender age of 13 when I hit Punkdom. The first band I ever saw live were The Undertones in about 1979/80 – taken to and from the concert by parents, went with best friend and, afterwards ... more

Advantages Advantages The atmosphere at a live gig is unique

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can get stuffy and claustrophobic at times

I have been to many, many gigs in my time ranging from Queen to Alvin Stardust and Bowie to Glen Campbell, I even saw the Carpenters, so it was quite a struggle to keep this opinion short enough to actually submit. I have chosen these particular ones for all sorts of reasons and I have tried to explain those reasons to you. I hope you enjoy reading about them – I’ll try not to go on TOO much! My next problem was how to present the list and after deliberation I decided to go for chronological order, as my feelings and reactions changed as I got older. I must just say that my memory ... more

Advantages Advantages Seeing so many of my heroes live :)

    Disadvantages Disadvantages The cost

The year 2000, in my life marked the greatest line-up of gigs to hit these shores in a long time. In the space of a year I watched in awe a selection of my favourite bands ever, perform across the British Isles. As ever I have trouble deciding on bands, gigs and albums in order of preference because I love them all. So the old chronological order will be present this time. Counting Crows (16th February 2000) This was the 3rd time seeing this band after the release of 3rd album ‘This Desert Life’, and as usual they didn’t disappoint. Counting Crows’ blend of mellow ... more

I have been to several concerts over the years. First of all, I was dragged by my parents to see a load of acts from the sixties. In the 1980s, I got my own back a bit, by dragging them along to see Five Star, The Housemartins and Wet Wet Wet in Nottingham. I went to Madonna's concert in Roundhay Park in Leeds, on the Who’s That Girl tour, which I think was 1986 or 1987. I paid around £30 then, it was open-air and packed, but I enjoyed it and I am pleased to be able to say I have seen her live. Recently, I have been to see Steps in Manchester, B*Witched and (only a few weeks ago) ... more

Advantages Advantages You'll have an amazing time

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Possibly cost

So, gig going eh? Personally I have been to a few in my time, and now consider myself to be one of the regulars. Rock gigs are where you'll find me though, so hopefully I can give you first timers a few tips :) I always buy my tickets on the Internet, using ticket providers such as ticket master and aloud - this way you can purchase the required amount of tickets quickly and easily. The tickets usually arrive within a week afterwards, however if you book a while in advance, they send you the tickets once they have been printed - so don't panic if this is the case, they do usually email you ... more

Well, if you have read any of my other ops you will by now know that going to gigs, festivals and concerts are one of my favourite past times when possible! Heres just a few of the gigs I have been to and what prices they were at that particular time and at what venue: Oasis - Wembley Stadium - July 2000 (standing/unreserved seats) £27.50 Mansun - Norwich UEA - October 2000 (standing) £10.00 Texas - London Wembley Arena - February 2001 (seating-reserved) £22.50 Bryan Adams - Londong Wembley Arena - March 2002 (reserved seating) £32.50 Oasis - Finsbury Park London - July 2002 (Reserved ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages sweaty!!

The first gig i ever went to was to see The Offspring at Wembley Stadium and ever since then going to gigs has been an addiction!!! It was nearing my birthday and so decided that i could use that as an excuse to get my mum to phone up and pass over her credit card details to the box office! We were very lucky to get tickets though as many gigs sell out within a matter of hours and we were booking just a week before the event!! Of course, if youre a very optimistic person then you can rely on there being loads left for you to buy at the door, but its much better to pay the postage and packaging ... more

Advantages Advantages nothing beats the thrill of seeing a band live

Disadvantages Disadvantages you ALWAYS end up behind the tall person!

Ok, so I've been to the odd gig I'd rather forget (*coughwestlifecough*) but in the past few years I've been lucky enough to go to some unforgettable gigs and see some amazing live performances (and some less than amazing ones, too). And I've learned a bit along the way which I think I should share. I grew up in a musical household, and I'm very musical myself. My dad spent the first 18 years of my life trying to impart the wisdom that the guitar is the greatest instrument in the world. I was never convinced (I still maintain it's the voice) but he and my brother and an impromptu trip to V2002 ... more

Advantages Advantages You get to see the bands you love without anyone telling you, halfway through your favourite song, that they think the guitarist is 'quite fit'.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Amusing yourself in between bands - no matter how much you want to see them there's still half an hour or more of twiddling your thumbs.

Going to gigs is what I do. I used to travel up to London with my friends after school and then run for the last train home (we never missed it, even managing to fit in a few after-show parties as well!) but then when I moved to London for university I started going to gigs on my own. When I tell people that I do this, they look at me as if I'm mad. I never intended it to end up this way but I'm not going to miss out on some brilliant gigs just because my friends have different musical tastes/other priorities. Going to gigs on your own really isn't that bad. People don't stare at you because ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Your ears ring for days!

Gig going Tickets I've put this section first for a good reason. When you and your mates read in the paper or in a music magazine about a gig happening near you, everyone says "Oh yeah. We've gotta go to that". Lo and behold 24 hrs before the gig everyone forgot to get tickets! Fair enough you can get tickets on the door but you can get tickets in advance by paying a booking fee (anything between 30p and £.50 -> in my experience). If you're seeing a big band you'll need to pre-book your tickets as the gig will sell out quickly and it's unlikely for there to be tickets on sale at the door. So ... more
