Goodnight Dad

Advantages: A really lovely book for ALL ages!!
Disadvantages: None

== GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM == === MICHELLE MAGORIAN === I first came across the book 'Goodnight Mr Tom' when my daughter (now in her thirties) read it in her final year at primary school as part of a project on the Second World War. I have always made it a rule to read any of the books my kids were studying so that I could discuss it with them, and I remember being very touched by this lovely story. I have read the book since and still enjoy it; I ...

Goodnight Mister Tom - a grown up children's novel

Advantages: Moving, a children's novel with depth and warmth
Disadvantages: Some serious subject matter - be wary for younger readers

...term he and I read Goodnight Mister Tom together in support of the WW2 syllabus subject that they were following. I found that what is essentially a children's novel (in the vein of The Railway Children and The Chronicles of Narnia) and which appears on the school syllabus, had both the depth and gravity of a novel aimed at adults, whilst remaining accessible to the younger reader. To be frank, I was surprised at how moved I was when reading it. ...
...it is genuinely moving. Goodnight Mister Tom did win awards, the Guardian Children's Award (1982) for one, and understandably. I can see why it would also appear on the school curriculum. It paints quite clearly what day to day life (in the country) was like during this period, from the clothes, to school life, to air raid shelters, to the food and how it was prepared. From this point of view it is a helpful text to support learning about the life ...

Good on ya Mr. Tom

Advantages: Beautifully written, emotional, enjoyable
Disadvantages: None

I read this book when I was 12 and regard it as one of my favourite childhood books. It is an incredibly touching story, set during World War II. William Beech is an 8 year old boy who is evacuated from London because of the bombings and he is sent to safety in the countryside. He is taken in (reluctantly) by Tom Oakley, a grumpy widower. It soon becomes clear that William has been cruelly treated by his mother. She regularly beats him and sends ...
...is staying with can also beat him. However, Tom refuses to use it. William is a weedy boy, who looks sickly and ill. He is clearly frightened and distressed and thinks that Tom will beat him like his mother does. He frequently wets the bed, but Tom is very understanding, and as William becomes more comfortable and happy, the bed wetting stops. William goes to school but cannot read or write. With tuition from "Mr. Tom" he flourishes. He also has ...

Magorian's Magic

Advantages: Emotional. Gripping. Addictive.
Disadvantages: None at all.

Goodnight Mr. Tom is a wonderful tale of emotions concerning a small, meek evacuee (William Beech) drafted into the country from London in World War II and the impact he has on a gruff, unsocialable old country man. (Thomas Oakley) The tale develops beautifully, showing how William gradually adapts to life in the country, and life in general. At 8 years old, his gruff supervisor soon warms to the new child in his life, bringing back past memories ...
...the terrified boy suggest to him that something is badly wrong, and after a wonderful few months for William, the suspicions are raised again, when William's mother summons him back to London. Magorian develops the emotions and love between characters very well, shown by William's precious friendships, his reaction to a terrible piece of bad news, and most touching, how he and 'Mr. Tom' develop a bond that cannot be separated. Could it be this that ...

...I first read Goodnight Mr Tom when I was at Primary school, and the heartbreaking story of William Beech has stayed with me through my teenage years and young adult hood. Michelle Magorian's expert storytelling never left me, and it was only during the last couple of years that I was able to re-experience the wonders of this tale. Through-out the entire tale of Good Night, Mr Tom the characters are well introduced and expertly placed throughout the ...

A modern classic.

Advantages: Great story and characters
Disadvantages: No wizards, so you might have to persude non-bookish kids to read it

I bought this book for my godson as an Xmas present recently, I had been itching to do so as soon as I thought he would be able to read it. This was my absolute favourite book as a child. The storyline is set in the early years of the Second World War, and the main character is an evacuee to the countryside. This aspect of the Second World War always interests children as it is about them. The main character, William, is an abused and undernourished ...
...insane mother. He finds himself in the care of Thomas Oakley, a retired country man who has led a secluded and reclusive life since his wife and son died in childbirth. William makes his first ever friends in the country, and forms a very strong relationship with a Jewish boy of the same age called Zach. William, with the help of everyone in the village, especially Tom and Zach, blossoms and discovers a talent for art, quickly catching up educationally ...

Goodnight Mr Tom - My Favourite Book

Advantages: Well Written And A Great Story Line
Disadvantages: Its A Tear Jerker

Goodnight Mr Tom is a book my mum gave me when I was younger and still to this day its my favourite book and one that I never bore of reading. The book was written by Michelle Magorian and has been in circulation since 1981. I first read this book when I was 12 but to be honest I think its one that should be viewed by parents before allowing their child to read it as it does contain some uncomfortable but powerful reading. The book tells the story ...
...central London to the country where he is boarded with a older widowed male called Tom Oakley. As time goes by and the two begin to build a close friendship and trust it becomes clear to Tom that Willie has had a hard life and faced with severe abuse both physically and mentally from his mother. Just when things look like they life is eventually going well for William his mother requests that he is returned. William has to leave his friends and Tom, ...

...I paid £4.99 for Goodnight mister Tom and i read it in a couple of days from start to finish i couldn't put the book down as it was so gripping and you can actually get into the lives on the characters. Goodnight Mister Tom

Advantages: Great book!
Disadvantages: There are none!

This book really touched my heart. It's about a boy who is evacuated from the area where he lives in London to go and live in the country. All the children who are evacuated have to live with a person in the village, or other remote villages, where it is hoped that they aren't bombed. The little boy gets put with an old man (Mister Tom) who isn't at first too happy about having to share his home with a stranger. However he adjusts his lifestyle to ...
...to the boy. They do everything together and it's almost like they're father and son. Soon, though, his mother summons him from London. He takes presents to her from everyone in the village, but when he gets there she insists that he stole them and punishes him. She mistreats him and the only person who can save him is Mister Tom. Without giving too much away, I'll say the ending is happy. It really is a great book and I would recommend it to everyone, ...

hello good book

Advantages: Great story, makes you laugh and makes you cry
Disadvantages: It wouldn't appeal to everyone, but definitely give it a go incase you're missing out.

Goodnight Mister Tom is set in wartime England, and a young boy named William is evacuated to the country. He is sent to stay with an old man named Tom, who seems gruff and unfriendly. William is a shy, quiet lad who wets the bed and crys, and between the unlikely couple a friendship blossoms. William turns into a much happier, livelier child, but then he is called back to his mother in London. This is a beautifully written book, that captures both ...
...and gets much more dramatic. I'd say this a good book for 10 or 11 +. Also worth a watch is the film, Goodnight Mister Tom, which portrays the story well. Michelle Magorian has written a number of books for young adults, but this is probably my favourite. ...

Excellent well written book!

Advantages: Well written
Disadvantages: None

Amazing book which I can read over and over. It made me laugh and cry over and over!!! It really pulls at your emotions! The book was first read to me when I was at primary school (8-10years old), we had a piece of the book at the end of each day when we were learning about the second world war and since then I had read this book over and over, even as an adult. The book follows the story of William Beech, who is evacuated from London to the countryside ...
...life and how he adapts to a very different life with a very different kind of carer. William has big social, education and self esteem needs to overcome and challenge. I have recommended this book to many and even brought my Dad a copy as he was always borrowing mine! The story is well written, you feel like you know the characters personally. I much prefer the book to the TV adaptation mainly because I had my own characters in my head and the ...

A blast from the past

Advantages: brilliant for school aged readers as an introuction to cultural life during World War Two
Disadvantages: it may not appeal to the more mature reader.

This book is an excellent choice for those interested in a gentle introduction into the lives of those evacuated during World War Two .It is a very moving book and allows you to delve right into the heart of the lives of the characters. It is well written, in a language accessible to a wide spectrum of people. The structure is uncomplicated and the content is neither harrowing nor too graphic, but still relays the undesirable aspects of the young ...

Advantages: Memorable characters, appealling to all ages
Disadvantages: Uneventful at times

"Oh no!", another book based on war that I have to teach to an array of interesting and lively pupils. "And it looks quite long!" These were my first thoughts when i came across this book but I couldn't have been more wrong. The teenagers were engrossed throughout - as was I when i first read this book. Mainly because the two main characters (a grumpy Mister Tom who lives in the countryside and the evacuee he takes on- young Willie Beech from London) ...
