...me but the lighting in HMV is weird. The lights are quite normal but are then backed up with surreal pink and purple lighting around areas, which make up the same lighting used on juke machines. Others are just in pitch black so not exactly the friendly enticing image I would assume they’d want. Advantages: A good range of CDs. You will be able to pick up semi-obscure stuff here. (I found it to be the only place who'll sell Weird Al)
Disadvantages: More costly than Virgin. Queues are badly arranged.

...they are slightly better than HMV and very much better than the awful Our Price. Fairly often, though, I find myself trudging out of the Virgin and down to the HMV which is conveniently only two stores down. The HMV is nearly as nice as the Virgin store. Even though my local HMV is a very small one it still has nearly all the variety that it’s bigger brothers and sisters have. It has a range of all different kinds of music, all formats of games, videos, DVDs and posters. Bigger HMV stores also stock clothing but sadly my local store doesn’t have this available. Advantages: A very good selection, excellent layout, spacious well appointed premesis, superb 'Urban' selection some fantastic bargains to be had in the sales.
Disadvantages: Some non-sale items are eye wateringly expensive, staff not so good with ordering or finding stock,occasional staff levelling problems, very little in the choice of alternative music formats eg SACD , not so good for rock music.

I've been using HMV since 1976 after my father purchased a Music Centre (years behind as usual) and the first album was an "Abba" compilation. At the tender age of 14 I never bothered with prices then. Since then almost thirty years have elapsed and I have been thorough the phases of checking out indie dealers, Japanese Imports, CD's, Japanses CD's and now Remastered CD's and Hybrid SACD's. The HMV store in Chester commands a large place in one of the busiest parts of the main shopping area. A few doors away is Virgin and for one moment you may think this means lots of competition and good prices. Well, no actually that does not seem to be the case. Although both HMV and Virgin etc to my experience all offer a great range of music and products, I find that for the convenience you end up paying a considerable amount more. If you're just browsing for the latest tom ten single then there is little difference between stores, especially during the usual 99p offers on first week releases desperate for a 'Number 1' (which is my opinion means very little these days). His masters voice HMV to you and me is well known in most city areas, and ours in oxford is no different.The store is set in the busy city centre on cornmarket street. opposite you have the virgin store. My husband and myself often purchase cds and videos and favour the hmv store in preference to the virgin store.The price wars between the two stores is not alot of difference in our area as the do battle for our custom. ...out of your head the HMV is good value for money. If you think this, you’d better start to take real notice of what I’m saying. “I know, I’ll buy a single for £2.99, even though I’ll only listen to it a handful of times and then it’ll be out of the charts before you can say Charlie Brown”. It might look as though HMV is one of the best places to buy your music and especially videos.( at the minute) However what happens when the sale ends? I am definately not normally a fan of HMV, mainly because it seems as though their music is a fair bit dearer than everyone else, even the chart stuff seems to be expensive. ...in Woolworths?? Why? -Music- In my local HMV the music selection is very good. You have the wall full of the Top 50 albums, with listening booths with new releases and the Top chart albums. They also have separate sections for different types of music, like Dance and Grebe music. They stock old and new CD’s, doing this on top selling singles as well. ...just can't find anywhere else, HMV is unlikely to let you down. Personally i as a music and movie fan could spend hours just browsing through the store, the selection is so broad and diverse. HMV like most other music / movie stores have a selection of miscellaneous producs too like calendars, t-shirts and media storage accessories. ...Sony MDR-J10 Headphones from the HMV Oxford Circus store for £9.99. When I came home and tried on these headphones I realised they are too big for me, therefore are unusable for me.
