Tsk I'm back writing in the shopping category again (yes Missie!! Again!!! - sorry, a comment aimed at someone in particular there - promise it won't happen again!!), anyway what could I possibly have to actually write about in Shopping this time? Well anyone who knows me will know that Music is one of the biggest things in my life, if it wasn’t for Music I don’t know where I’d have been at times and heck in recent times I don’t know where I’d have been if it wasn’t for my local branch of HMV. Now I know that most of the time I resort to buying online at sites such as play, cd-wow and amazon ... more

Advantages Advantages Offers are excellent, good selection in rock, pop, alternative and video

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad atmosphere, very average in general - better options elsewhere

UPDATED 30/6/01 I just wanted to add an extra star for the store purely due to the fantastic deals I've just enjoyed in their summer sale. I picked up 3 jazz CDs for £5 each, saving a total of £12 on retail prices. Thanks HMV! HMV is a nationwide chain for music and video. My local HMVs are in the Braehead shopping centre and Glasgow. The Store The store itself is pretty basic. The shelves are very regimented, and this is typical of the personality-less impression. The atmosphere is intrusive, with horrible fluorescent lighting and thumping music, which you can't escape, whether you're ... more

For years there wasn’t an HMV in Colchester, giving Virgin Megastore a near-monopoly in CD sales (despite the incredibly cool independent Time Records – recently closed – and WHSmiths selling pop singles to kids along with pick n mix). It was only moving to Oxford that gave me a real taste of HMV (Cornmarket Street – almost opposite Virgin), though there’s now a small HMV in Colchester (round the corner from the library, what used to be Mothercare) and I’ve had a few trips to the huge HMV on Oxford Street too, as well as a few others… To be honest, I’m not sure how HMV ranks up against Virgin ... more

Having recently accompanied my brother on a trip to London I visited the simply huge HMV store near Picadilly circus. I actually live in Swindon and thought our store was big but this one took the biscuit. Spread over 4 floors it was a massive expanse of every album you could ever want. Amazingly for a store of this size the staff knew where everything was. I asked 2 seperate members of staff for directions to specific CD's I had been after for a long time and they tok me straight there, picking out the CD's instantly. For those who are about to say this only occurs in London, I've had the ... more

Having been mad on music for 10 years, I have been a constant CD buyer throughout each of those years. It’s best not to count up the money I must have spent on albums but just consider the excellent CD collection I now have. The majority of this money has gone to HMV so I can safely say I have contributed greatly to their continued retail success. It is only now I am beginning to tire of it all. In my town we are limited to HMV cornering the music market. ‘Our Price’ was across from HMV until they closed down, however, they could never really compete with the choice available ... more

HMV The Three Letters For Me. It's a Saturday and you jump out of bed, funny how I just crawl out of bed any work day but today is mine. Not sure what to do so I think I might just log on to ciao to see what to review. And sure enough I see those three letters HMV are there so I shall get the bus into town and give it the once over. Before I log off I check out the latest review by Beatlesgal25 as that young talent writes a mean review. Enough waffle let's go to HMV. The bus stops just outside HMV and out I hop, I don't really hop, just one of those silly sayings. Then shout "Thanks" to the ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price, Selection, Products

This is a response to ImogenW's Room 101 challenge. It could have been Our Price, but I've done one on them, it could have been Virgin but their turn will come, it could have been V-Shops but I've never used one (and probably never will , 2 CDs for £25 or £14 each who are they kidding?). HMV, Virgin and Our Price are the effective face of record sales for most of the population in Britain today. I remember years ago going to London to their Oxford Street store to see the "biggest" record shop in Britain at the time. I got there and yes it was big, but all their stock was out on the floor, so ... more

HMV has always been my favourite music shop. If it’s available, HMV should have it, be it CD, video or whatever. If they don’t have it in stock they can order it for you and hold it over until you come in and pick it up. The HMV local to me (Belfast) is divided up into three levels – the bottom floor carries popular and chart music, the middle floor is for classical and soundtrack music, and the top floor is for videos and computer games. Each floor is spacious and well laid out, and the staff in each section are knowledgeable and know their stuff well. They don’t just ... more

Advantages Advantages The great service I had once.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps I haven't found out yet.

I seldom buy CDs or videos from any shops. There was once HMV had a great offer to most of the videos and CDs. I bought several CDs and videos from HMV during the offer period. When I brought back home, the CDs I bought which I thought fantastic and nice turned out to be not my types and favourites. I was so annoyed when I was disappointed on the CDs I chose basically because I have spent some money on something that I dislike. Well, my friend told me that I could return the CDs to HMV. At the beginning, my feeling is "yeah right!?". However I thought it is worth a try because I felt so ... more

Well what can you say about HMV probebly the biggest music store in the UK well most people would say very expensive but have a massive selection. True to a certain extent they do indeed have a massive selection ranging from hippy classics to hip hop, rock, pop etc. But are they really a rip-off. If you go to any music store in the uk they will be almost the same price as HMV but because some wiseguy started musiczone people have started slagging HMV off because you can get cd's for £9.99 at musiczone. Well lets see ive never seen any kind of sale at musiczone and i see many at HMV where you ... more
