Advantages Advantages Can prevent you from buying a car that shouldn't be sold, saving you thousands!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Costly per check

Imagine this scenario........You work all year round, never treating yourself to much. You've been managing to get around in that old banger of a car of yours. You know it's not going to last out much longer......the bottom end is knocking like a postman and its pouring out enough blue smoke to make a small hole in the ozone layer above you. Its time for a new car - why not? You work hard enough and deserve to be the envy of your neighbours. You look around and find a car that you fall in love with.......you part with your hard earned cash and drive away with a grin like a cheshire cat. The ... more

Advantages Advantages checks the car history

Disadvantages Disadvantages None it will cost you £32 per car but its better than say losing £5000

The HPI check is something I would always recommend someone to do when buying a car. For the small cost of £32.00 you get a history check about the vehicle you wish to buy. What you need to complete an HPI check is the reg number and the chassis number. I know you can get away with just providing the reg number to HPI buts its easy for someone to change the plates rather than the normally 18 digit number stamped on the body. This number can normally be found on the floor next to the driver or somewhere in the engine bay. When you phone HPI they also give you the engine size, body and colour ... more

WAP goes from strength to strength. Picture this: you are out and about and see a car for sale. It is just what you want, in good condition and the price is right. You have the cash on you. How do you know if the car is stolen, or has an outstanding loan against it? The simple way is to log on to your Orange WAP phone and do an HPI Check. Simply enter the vehicle’s registration number and within seconds the Make, model, colour, date of first registration and engine capacity will be displayed on your screen. This costs nothing. For a modest fee or £5.00 (it will appear on your next Orange ... more

When buying a secondhand car it is always advisable to do as many checks on it's authenticity as practicably possible. There are hundreds of thousands of stolen cars out there guised as 'good' cars, waiting to be sold to some unsuspecting person. Therse stolen cars create a significant revenue for the seller, and usually cash, does the taxman ever know! A safeguard to your proposed buy is to firstly to do an HPI check at a small cost, around £30. This check ensures that the car has not got any outstanding debts on it such as being sold prior to the HP being paid on the car, because if it has ... more

Advantages Advantages reveal murky past, peace of mind

Disadvantages Disadvantages waste of £28 if nothing found ?

HPI offer a history check on any vehicle registered in the UK. Give them £28 and the vehicles registration number, they will tell you whether it has a shadey past. They carry details about any credit owing on the car, first registerd details such as colour etc, any accident damage recorded against the car and whether it has been stolen. I used this service for a Fiat Uno my mum was going to buy through a family " friend ". Turned out the car had finance owing - so it was still technically the property of the credit company and that it had been written off in it's first year. Well worth spending ... more

5 Stars Quick review of HPI Vehicle check by newone1234 13/10/2007
I have just bought a second hand car and used HPI - I found the service excellent - I knew what I was getting as I used a comparison site to ensure I got the right cover www.comparecarchecks.com and this helped as there are several players out there who don't all offer the same cover - so ensure that you compare the providers. Very Pleased and no real down sides to getting peace of mind.

    Advantages Advantages None

Disadvantages Disadvantages Waste of money. Unclear terms hidden in small print.

I paid £22 for an HPI vehicle check. It is only after you have paid for the service that they tell you their guarantee is not valid for Ireland! Basically you have paid for a service that is worthless and when I queried this they told me I should have read the small print. Maybe, but how many people actually read all this type of gobbledegock before paying for what should be a trusting type service...HPI CHECKS... avoid if car is registered in Ireland and Northern Ireland because they refuse to guarantee what they are telling you so absolutely no peace of mind. There are much cheaper ... more

One of the pitfalls of buying a second hand cars is that the limited protection a buy can have. In my case, HPI ( carcheckonline ) saved me from buying a very reasonable priced Renault Megane. The car body was faultless, engine runs fine and all lights/ electrical parts are in good condition. And I would never suspected that it was an insurance write off, without a quick data check the HPI (also the VIN number and V5C) There are a number of Data Check services available, although I would recommend three: The Original: HPI - Full HPI Check is now £19.99 The Cheap: RAC Car Data Checks (£5 for ... more
