I bought this laptop early Jan 2004 with much regrets later as the intel centrino came just a few weeks later. Its very helpful having a floppy drive as many you have to buy externally, so great if you are at Uni or college and having to transfer a lot of work around. ...not convinced. I will phone HP Tech Support and query this. Even at 1024, the text and graphics are not as crisp as they should be, in my opinion and comparing the same images on my old Dell. I have turned off font-smoothing (significant difference!), and updated the video drivers (more improvement), but its not as clear as it should be. When I got my HP NX9010 Laptop in July 2004 I was really excited. Since then that has faded a little bit but I would still recommend it, and wouldn't swap mine. ...find them useful but maybe HP would have been better spending that allocation of the cost on upgraded features. Memory - the unit comes with 256 mb but really a multi tasking machine running Windows XP is a lot happier running on 512mb, especially when the video card shares this memory. It was easy to upgrade though, just a couple of screws, and slot another 256 in, easy as that! Now I can afford to allocate 64 meg to the video and watch perfect ...
...never used, do people still use floppies?! Maybe a multi-card reader would have been better instead? I do have a card reader that slots straight into the expansion slot, so the floppy drive is there should I need it. The real bugbear of this machine is the built in speakers. With the volume up full, I sometimes struggle to hear DVD soundtracks. I've since bought some external speakers that take power from the USB port. What do I like? The freedom! ...

I purchased the Compax nx9010 on a whim last year & its one of my best buys ever. The hard drive appears to have been eaten up by iTunes but I'm reassured that its easy enough to connect extra HDD to laptops nowadays - saying that, it still runs beautifully and start-up time is far quicker than with regular desktop pc's. With infrared at the front of the laptop (handy for using with compatible mobile 'phones) and plenty of connections at the back ...

I was given this machine, brand new, by my employers 2 years ago, so it must be cheap. So far, I have had a new battery and new hard drive. It crashes about 3-4 times a day and has done since new, nobody can work out why. It is a slow machine when it is working, but i can get all of my work done with it. Having bought this computer a few weeks ago I can say that I consider it to be an excellent buying choice.It's fast, reliable and easy to use and comes with quite a few programmes installed. Of course that stands for someone who works in the business sector. For someone who is interested in loading a lot of image processing products (i.e graphic designer), I believe that you are going to find the specific model inadequate to fulfil your expectations. ...
