HP Deskjet 400

Advantages: Smallish size, Can print on envelopes, stiff paper can be fed in through the back.
Disadvantages: Only one cartridge at a time, noisy, paper jams.

There are several problems from the outset with this printer. Firstly, its can definately not be called a quiet printer.. It makes the most horiffic, "clanking" and "clattering" noise when it picks up the paper and the noise of the actual printing is quite considerable. Also it is prone to paper jams, and I have had to, on several occasions, pull out paper tightly stuck inside the printer, trying not to rip it inside the printer. Another big problem ...

That means that if you print a document with colour in it, you need to have the colour cartridge in and in that case the black is actually made by mixing all the other colours together. Not only does this look quite bad, it is also very wasteful of the colour ink. ...have had a number of HP deskjets over the years (although I am now on a Lexmark Z11) and have always found them reasonably good value for money. They seem to be the cheapest printer to replace when the old one wears out (this is why I have had 3 already!) but having said this they *do* wear out quickly. 2 out of the 3 models I had went in for repair at least once during their 'lifespan'. Advantages: Very good quality printing, compact and fairly quiet.
Disadvantages: High replacement cartridge costs, approximately £20, although cheaper refills work well and save money.

The Hewlett Packard Deskjet 400 is a great inkjet printer. It can be noisy and the cartridges are very expensive. The quality is very good and it is a compact printer. The printer has served me very well with continual use, for graphics and text. I have printed out many long letters and I am very impressed with the print quality. The printer is not very fast, but the printing is good quality. The make is a respectable one, being Hewlett Packard, ...
...One small problem I do have with the printer is that the paper has to be perfectly inline or it scrunches it up and the printer jams. This can be annoying, but I now know how to avoid the problem, buy loading the first sheet manually pressing the paper feed button. ...do do not buy a HP deskjet 400 printer unless you wish for the printer to eat your paper! Ever since we brought our printer about once every 2 weeks it chews the paper up and then prints computer language and you then have to turn the printer off and pull the paper out and turn it on again and print it again and hope it does not eat it up! The ink is far to pricey at £25 a go. So please do not buy the paper eating printer! ... Read review

Advantages: USB and Parallel Port compatible, dual cartridge system (colour and black), quiet and speedy.
Disadvantages: Takes up quite a bit of desk space.

...I bought this printer as a replacement for my ageing and increasingly incapable HP Deskjet 400. My personal requirements for a new printer was for decent black text performance with the ability to produce quality colour when needed. In all, I am a fairly average user, with most of my printing being of the school project variety (mostly text with coloured graphs, fancy titles and the occasional photo). It was with this in mind that I purchased the Stylus Color 880. I found the initial setup to be resonably easy, with the software guiding me through all the steps one by one, telling me which parts to lift up and even when and how to put the ink cartriges in (It has 2 cartriges, one black and one for colour, both of which go in side by side). Advantages: Cheap running costs, separate ink tanks, fairly fast.
Disadvantages: A cheap and easily broken paper out tray, some small errors from time to time.

...Xerox DocuPrint M750 After buying myself a cheap digital camera, the dinky Digital Dream Co. L’espion I needed a printer capable of transferring my pictures from my computer onto paper, better than my aging Hewlett Packard Deskjet 400 was capable of. I was very tempted by some of the cheap but fairly well reviewed Lexmark printers. One shop were able to sell them at an amazing £30, with a specification similar to some of the well known brands. I was very tempted, until I looked into the running costs of such a machine. The original Lexmark cartridges were £25.99 for a black cartridge and £27.99 for a colour cartridge. This to me seemed ridiculous, as you could buy another printer for nearly the same money! I then trusted the reliability of Hewlett Packard, as my Deskjet 400 had served me well without any problems at all... Read review
