Advantages: excellent quality printing, reasonable speed, ease of use Disadvantages: multi-feeding paper
We bought our HP Laserjet 6l nearly six years ago. At a time when most of our computer-literate friends were buying colour desk-jet printers, we weighed up the kinds of things we wanted to print, and the cost, and decided that a black-only laser printer would actually meet our needs better. • What we wanted it for •
We bought it shortly before Christmas, so that we could print our annual family newsletter on it. Six years ago, photocopying was quite ... ...laser printer.
• The HP Laserjet 6l •
The printer is reasonably small, sitting neatly on a desk next to a computer monitor. The paper is fed in through a rear slot on the top, and can emerge either through a parallel slot also at the top, or - for items such as envelopes printed on thicker paper - through a single-feed slot at the front. A simple flick of a switch alters this setting, which is most convenient.
The quality at the time was considered ...

Advantages: Good printing Disadvantages: Bad smudging when printing both sides.
In a lot of respects, this is a good printer: quite quick, very clear printing, takes 160 gsm card, works without Windows. It does have paper feeding problems, though in my experience not as bad as described by aaxxaa's Nightmare Guide below. For me, the drawback is that it's quite unsuited to printing on both sides of the paper (duplexing). Although the manual recommends it as a means of saving paper and the environment, the printouts are no good ... ...reverse sides. This is due to toner rubbing off the previous sheet as it's dragged through the feeder. There is apparently no cure for this other than to feed single sheets so that it can't happen. No solution, unfortunately, because the feed isn't good enough - single sheets tend to come out skewed. ...

-- HP LaserJet 6L in brief…
This printer has been working with me from ages. I know it’s considered a bit old at the moment and the last time I logged to HP website, I found it was discontinued; however it’s a great printer with great functionalities.
I bough this printer about 4 years ago, when It was a hit in the market and hp was just offering it to the people, I think it was one of the most successful printers to the HP company. Anyway, I am ... ...box you will find:

Advantages: Superb quality, affordable laser printing Disadvantages: Slow for a laser printer, poor memory capacity, need to use good quality paper or face paper jams
...loading and you should be okay.
After all that I have said, it's still value for money, the paper jam problem I have mentioned above is slightly less likely to happen on a 6L than the identical looking 5L. HP have been aware of the problem and have made improvements. ...

Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: paper capacity. 6 pages per minute
We've got a few of these at work and they are really easy to use and very reliable. I'd buy some more, but they don't seem to be availabe any more.
This is a shame because they are a good printer.
Now I'd buy a Laserjet 1100. These are better than the 6L because they print a bit faster. They are also really cheap for a laser (should be about £232 ex VAT, Dec 2000)
There is a brother printer which is a similar price and had some good reviews, but ...

The HP LaserJet 6L is the smallest and cheapest LaserJet that looks like an inkjet. Its unusual shape was first adopted in the 5L. The HP LaserJet printer is ideal for business users in Microsoft Windows, DOS or OS/2 environments who want the convenience and confidentiality of a desktop laser printer. This true 600 dpi Laser with 6 ppm engine carries the same instant-on low-power fuser, and the same single mutli-purpose button - there is no power switch. Paper feeds and ejects vertically. The mechanicals get top marks though, and the front section swings out clean; clearing a paper jam is easy. You can also choose to front-eject the paper, though there is no collection tray there. And you can feed envelopes through a straight paper path. The software does a pre-installed check of your hardware specs, such as processor and memory. There is a possibility to use both drivers that can boost your productivity.
