Solid and dependable

Advantages: Big bank name
Disadvantages: No reward program

I have been with the bank for over 15 years and have experienced most of the banks products that my meager funds allow - this includes the credit cards. The application process is slick enough - either fill out the form and send it off, or walk through it at your branch, and within 10 days the cards are in your hands. You can request to have a PIN for the cash machines - which I didn't want - however, they sent it anyway. This was a small inconvenience. ...
...helpline, which I did have to call once (and thankfully once only) - which provided the usual slick service. The replacement cards were in my hands after about 4 working days. My only minor gripe is with the endurance of the magnetic strip, however my latest card now has a chip in it, so it looks like they have fixed this as well! Rewards schemes are non-existant, with the scheme having closed sometime last year with nothing to replace it. You ...

...Classic and Mastercard Classic with HSBC for some 15 years and must say that up to now I have very satisfied. There is an interest free period from the date of the retail transaction to the due date of the statement and basically I try to ensure full payment at the date of notification to avoid interest charges. Finance chrges are imposed on outstanding cash advances and transaction balances from the transaction date. Statements are received monthly ...

Both the Visa and Mastercard credit cards enjoy a high level of acceptability not only in the UK but worldwide. I have used them at petrol stations, hotels in UK, Borneo, Brunei, Hong Kong and Italy,to book air line flights.to buy groceries and at duty free emporiums. The payment proceedures are straightforward. You can debit your Current ...

Helpful bank, but bad for credit rating

Advantages: Very useful for students who tried to get their first credit card
Disadvantages: Does not report one's good performance to the credit bureaus

I acquired a HSBC Combined card while as a student and I found the bank help and couteous. The card does not carry an annual fee or other charges but neither does it offer any benefits. Differ from many other cards, HSBC does not automatially increase the credit limit on the card even though you have good payment history unless you asked for it. This is not good as you will need the credit limit in order to move on to HSBC gold card which will offer ...

If you decided not to use the Halifax card, leaving it in £1 credit would be a good way to do so. An article about credit scoring which I hope will be useful to Ciao members can be found at http://www.mycoupon.freeuk.com/creditscoring.htm I have decided to keep it offsite so that it can updated ...

...card at it limits with HSBC and 1 at its limit with Halifax. This opinion is a comparison of the treatment I have received from both credit card companies for exactly the same circumstances. Initially after I graduated I went onto the dole for 3 months - fairly typical for students! I realised that on £40 a week I could not afford the monthly payments so I phoned to advise my credit cards of the situation. HSBC said how sorry they were to hear this ...

When I couldn't pay 2 months ago because I had a job interview and had to buy new clothes (and then subsequently got the job and had to buy an entire wardrobe as it was a much better job than the minimum wage job I was in before) the HSBC said not a problem so long as I could give them a definite date for a payment - which I did. The Halifax fined ...

Advantages: Big brand name
Disadvantages: No rewards program

I have been doing my banking with various different banks and building societies over the years, with varying degrees of success. I have found that the service offered with these cards, whilst not exceptional, is more than adequate to fulfill the basic requirements within the credit card market. The application process is simple - either fill out the form and send it off, or walk through it at your branch, and within 10 days the cards are in your ...
...account with HSBC, you can even aply on line. You can request to have a PIN for the cash machines - which I didn't want. They do operate a 24 hour lost and stolen helpline, which thankfully, I have never had to call, but you can probably rely on given the big brand name. On the 'classic' cards, there are no rewards programs. This is different for Gold and Platinum cardholders, however since you have to pay to have these types of cards, I do not ...

...why you'd go for a HSBC set of credit cards, apart from the fact that you already have an HSBC account. It's there. It's well run. It's not cheap, it has 'points' but you need to spend a fortune to use them. They also charge a yearly fee of 12 pounds, which seems excessive for not getting much in return. All I can say is thank god im on a graduate account at the moment, phew I don't have to pay such a figure. Basically a standard pair of bank's ...

Advantages: High credit limits

...I can assuredly say my HSBC credit card is the worst. It has plenty of credit though, the bank willingly offering larger credit limits to those who already hold accounts there. The problem comes with the £12 yearly charge - even if you don't use the card, the less than impressive interest rate (which is 16.9% for my card right now), the bog standard card designs (ok, now I am just being picky but you get the idea). Anyway, I would recommend instead ...

Head's in the sand to avoid work

Advantages: None if they're going to carry on like this
Disadvantages: Don't work to hard chaps

HSBC bank and credit cards have been quite good to me over the years, being fast efficient and in 5 years have not sent me a single nasty letter. I should have known it was too good to be true! I have a HSBC credit card which takes the minimum monthly repayment from my account every month. I do this for convenience and to avoid problems, because I’m away a lot due to work I’m not always there the day the statement arrives and until now ...

After 3 months of this I received a demand for some money from HSBC credit cards saying my direct debit had been cancelled. ...

HSBC to the rescue

Advantages: Top Worldwide Bank, Ease of Use, NO FEE!
Disadvantages: No loyalty Scheme on Standard Card

I have been banking with HSBC for som e years now and I have yet to have any trouble with them. As soon as I turned 18 I applied for a credit card and one easy phone call to HSBC did it all. The friendly helpful staff explained the application process and withing 5 -10 minutes I was approved. The cards the offer cater different people. Disadvantages: rates, rewards

This card is absolutly one of the worst I've come across. Interest rates are high, incentives are low and billing is to frequent. The points system requires you to spend hundreds of pound just for a poxy gift at the end of it. If you have this card get a new one. The only good thing about this card is the On-line and automated telephone facilities. Customer service is very good and there are many high street branches to choose from. Also there ...

The most boring card in the world

Advantages: It does the job
Disadvantages: Boring/ high interst rate

The HSBC card is a fairly standard credit card with very few frills that I can think of. I suppose though that is fulfills it's surpose as a payment device, but that is not the point. There are so many banks and credit cards out there today that you'd think they would make some attempt to attract people. The card has a fairly high rate of interest and a very poor rewards programme indeed. The card is also fairly boring: Their latest design is a ...

Crazy rates

Advantages: Efficient
Disadvantages: Crazy high rates

HSBC obviously do not consider being in the cheap credit card race, that is under way at present, at all important to their core business. The crazy rate on their credit cards at the moment is 14.9%. You can only laugh at that, when there are several cards offering rates just one tenth of HSBC's. For members of their internet banking, it is very useful that your credit card details appear along with all of your other accounts on the "my accounts" ...

Maybe customer loyalty isn't so highly prized

Advantages: You will never find a place that accepts credit, but not from you (well, almost never ;)
Disadvantages: Bad reward policy has really irked me.

I have been with HSBC since '95 and have had a combined card account for the last three years. I have always been happy with the service, but lately I think it is getting worse. Mainly concerning the reward scheme. I never thought this was great, one point per £10 spent, but I did think that one day it would all be worth it....how wrong was I!! They have just announced the abolition of the reward scheme, with points unredeemed as of September going ...
...in for? Enough penny sweets to last you a...daytime, i.e. nothing of realy value. I don't believe that three years of loyal patronage and over £5,000 of borrowing equates to only £25 in vouchers, I really find this insulting. Moreove, to not try and resurrect the problem is even worse, just to cut it out all of a sudden is bad play. Although I will be quick to point out that on the occasions of having lost my cards they have been swift and just ...
