The place where my hard earnt cash goes

Advantages: convenient, easy to use, 24 hour banking available
Disadvantages: different interest rates and overdraft charges for different income groups

...a current account with the Halifax since the tender age of 14. No I wasn’t some kind of precocious brat with an unhealthy interest in the F.T. The people who employed me to do a paperround preferred to put my wages into a bank account which happened to be the Halifax. So 13 years later I’m still with the Halifax. Avoiding the hassle of changing my account is one big reason why I’m still with them. Also they’ve given me no reason to be forced to change ...
...find out plenty about the Halifax current account and general services from their website (www.halifax.co.uk). APPLYING FOR AN ACCOUNT You can apply for an account online via the halifax website. There is the old fashioned way of going into a branch and applying in person. I must admit I prefer to do these kind of things face to face as you can see that they’ve been done. I’m not sure what identification requirements there are for applying online, ...

DID YOU SELL YOUR SHARES.....

Advantages: All in opinion
Disadvantages: All in opinion

...Leeds Building Society merged with Halifax ~ a merger that suited me nicely seeing that I was given Halifax Plc shares, a total value of around £2,000. All Leeds branches closed down and all existing account members were taken over by Halifax. My initial reaction was to close my account and sell my shares, after all I was more than happy with Barclays Bank and so there was really no need to look elsewhere to invest my money. Despite the merger I ...
...account got converted into a Halifax Current account. ~ So after six years of banking with Halifax Plc I can gladly say that I am more than a satisfied customer. The merger has doubled if not trebled the number of their customers & more importantly they are now more than capable to compete with other high street banks ~ Since the launch of the merger Halifax Plc has developed into a major force in the financial industry, growing from strength to ...

Halifanx u very much

Advantages: Good HS presence, v.good online service, good range of fin.services
Disadvantages: Annoying adverts!

I've been with the Halifax for over 10 years now and must say they're not a bad bunch. Occasionally you get the odd muppet behind the glass screen but, compared to other current accounts (Natwest & Nationwide) I've had, they're right up there with the best. At the moment, I share a Halifax account with my girlfriend and we use that for all our bill paying. We pay in £1000 a month which covers rent and bills quite nicely but also entitles us to 4% ...
...is updated monthly, so we get a couple of quid a month from that, which is better than a kick in the teeth! We also have a £1000 arranged overdraft just incase and its nice to have this feature, even though we haven't used it just yet. A feature that is much better than natwest is the paying in at the hole in the wall. You don't need to include a paying in slip, which you do with Natwest. It must print the s/c and acc. number on the envelope, which ...

Probably the best bank in the world

Advantages: Generally a good bank to be with
Disadvantages: They always seem to give me the trainee

...to the days of the Halifax Building Society I remember the good old junior savings accounts with the little books and stuff like that. Not quite as exciting as the china pigs Lloyds used to offer (I think it was Lloyds anyway), but mum always told me the interest is better. Coming back to the current day where the savings book is all but redundant, the interest is still better. Up to 40 times better so they claim, and that’s just on their ...
...is where I feel the Halifax is really starting to show who’s boss, and the way they are doing this it through their website. The structure of this I’ll come back to but the accounts they offer through it, namely the websavers are a pair of gems when it comes to common sense banking. For me at least anyway. Since discovering internet banking I’ve moved nearly all my money around using the transfer method. Now I’ve read other ...

Banking is good for you

Advantages: Independence, easier to get than a normal bank account
Disadvantages: No cheque card or overdraft facility

...ago I set up a Halifax Cardcash account. I originally set it up just to have my Family Allowance paid into. At the time I set it up, all I needed to do was give Halifax some identification and £10 to start the account (although I think that has gone up to £50 now). I only had about £60 per month going into the account, but that was plenty. Cardcash is a sort of truncated bank account for people with credit issues or a lack of credit history, which ...
...and overdraft charges. My Halifax Cardcash account also allows me to set up direct debits and standing orders to pay my bills, mortgage, insurance policies, television licence and all manner of other things. There is a telephone banking service but I never use it because the Internet banking service is fantastic. It was very easy to set up - a quick phone call to the helpline to answer some questions, a pin number through the post in a couple of ...

Helpful Halifax

Advantages: good staff, easy application process
Disadvantages: I am still still waiting for one

I have been with the Halifax for about six years now, and have had no problems whatsoever. I have had a savings account for that time, and from when I first started, I have had no complaints. The staff were very friendly and helpful when I went in and told them what I wanted, and it did not take long for them to set up my account. Only a book account as I was so young, but as soon as I turned 16 and started earning some money, they gave me a cardcash ...

Direct debit debacle

Advantages: See op
Disadvantages: See op

...a cardcash account with the Halifax for 15 years. I ran it with the sole intention of having all my direct debits in one place. My main salary goes into my current account, which, fortunately is not with the Halifax. You might wonder why have the Direct Debits in a totally separate bank. Well, I am paid for most of my work by bacs ( this is a direct tranfer system for those of you that don't know). However,I also receive a few hundred pounds worth ...
...Halifax was , at the time, the only bank which would pay out direct debits against uncleared cheques. Great, I thought, especially as they take about 10 days to clear the wretched things!! I believe the clearance may be marginally quicker now, but I am not certain. All went swimmingly until just after Christmas . Suddenly I started to receive letters saying that my direct debits had bounced. There WAS money in the account. My mortgage people were ...

Hassle free banking - until you start earning

Advantages: Great to begin with
Disadvantages: They treat graduates worse than most other banks

...I had no complaints. The Halifax had treated me in an exemplary fashion. How things have changed. They were fine when I was a student. I had to make full use of the interest-free overdraft that was on offer. Ok, so it wasn't as generous as that offered by other banks, but I viewed that as a good thing - it helped me manage my debt slightly better than I might otherwise have done. And the first year after I graduated was fine too. I was in low-paid ...

HALIFAX

Advantages: Friendly efficient service
Disadvantages: none

...and made me think of Halifax as a bank with a friendly and humorous approach to banking. And as usual, they always seemed to be advertising much better rates than their competitors on simple things such as current accounts and credit cards/loans. It seemed to me that Halifax were generally different to the stale and boring likes of Lloyds TSB and HSBC. Although the Co-op had made me immediately close my account after coughing up the money that I ...
...my Abbey account and the Halifax were offering me £100 to take it off my hands (use their switching service to transfer my banking from Abbey to Halifax). As you can imagine, I found it hard to turn this offer down! Now, you may think that having a bank switch your account from one of their competitors to themselves would be a hassle-filled operation. I was assured that it would not cause me any inconvenience and that they would keep me informed ...

Flying SOLO

Advantages: Cant get into debt
Disadvantages: Cant get at my money!!

...banks I stumbled across the Halifax Cardcash account. Fifty pounds to open it, Solo Card, cheque book but no guarantee card, no overdraft, no spending over your limit. At first it sounded fantastic, being a student it meant I couldnt be tempted by offers of big overdrafts, etc. But the more I look into things the more worried I get. Firstly: the charges if it does refuse a Direct Debit or Cheque. £27.50 per item, that is extortinate. I'm sure there ...
...the next Tuesday. Hum Halifax dont like letting go of your money do they? All in all, I do think the Halifax procedures leave a lot to be desired. For example a little old lady with a savings account asked for a cheque to be issued, or to take out enough money to pay her £30 gas bill and they wouldnt let her!! It was her money for Gods sake! and they wouldnt let her have it! In the end they persuaded her to come back and open a cheque account with ...

IMPERTINENT,ILL MANNERED,INANE IDIOTS

Advantages: good interest rate and online facility
Disadvantages: misogynistic people that they call "staff"

...I chose The Halifax because primarily because of the good interest rates (1.76% on my cardcash account, but bear in mind I am not 18, if you are you can get a new current account which offers a huge 4% interest if you pay £1000 or more each month into the account) and the promise of superior online banking, which not all banks offer, especially to young people. I decided to go into my local branch and get an application form, which I filled in and ...

A local branch for local people

Advantages: Its local
Disadvantages: You might never get out

Visited my branch of the Halifax today. I was in a state of deep gloom as I entered as the purpose of my visit was to pay a hefty credit card bill. The initial impression of the branch is cleanliness. Checked out the automatic glass doors on entry as I have been programmed to do after numerous market research tasks I have performed in recent weeks. Doors clean, yes, check. Carpet clean, yes, check. Bins emptied, yes, check. No litter lying on ...
...queue for the privilege. Halifax advices to use the ATMs wherever possible to enable you to make your transaction speedily and avoid unnecessary waiting. So I approach the machine, of which there are two inside the branch - a further hole in the wall is situated outside - and proceed, very reluctantly to key in the necessary ID to enable me to pay my bill. I like to do my bit to contribute to the efficient running of the branch, so I wont clog ...

Banking made easier

Advantages: Efficient online service, friendly and helpful staff on phone and in branches, good interest rates
Disadvantages: Automated phone service a bit of a pain, some services not available over bank counter

...opening a current account with Halifax about six years ago, while I was still at university, enticed by a cheap pager offer (it's been made rather redundant now by my mobile!) and an unusually high interest rate. Unusually high interest rate?! Oh yes, well it was for a current account, 4% gross (meaning before tax is taken off), though that was only to last while I had the 'student' account, and dropped after I graduated. However, they soon introduced ...

On its website, Halifax only compares its rates against the 'big' banks, such as Lloyds TSB, Barclays, Natwest, and HSBC's 0.1% gross rates, but they do currently pay more than Nationwide's equivalent Flexaccount of up to 2.5%. Halifax pay a quite low rate if you put in less than £500 (as of Dec 26 2002, 0.25% gross), a slightly higher rate if it's more than £500 (2%), and an even higher rate if you pay in more than £1000 (3%). The overdraft ...

Seventy five quid better off and great online

Advantages: £40 better off and great online
Disadvantages: Better options available elsewhere if you pay in less than £500 a month

...desk top from Halifax.co.uk. Halifax themselves seem keen to market themselves as the good guys in a banking market over-run by rip off merchants, namely HSBC, LloydsTSB, RBS (who own Nat West) and Barclays. While they call these the big four, HBOS (their parent company) now ranks as the third largest bank on the stock market, displacing Lloyds TSB and Barclays. So, how good is their current account? Well, it is split in to three first of all, ...

But, it saves queuing in the post office and costs nothing (except for what you ISP charges you). I have not mentioned the instant access Websaver account. Paying 4.0%! Halifax-online.co.uk is the website. Setting things up is a little fiddly, but well worth ...

Oh Howard what did you get me into

Advantages: Extremely good interest rates payable monthly. Excellent on-line banking facilities, Easy to understand monthly statements
Disadvantages: They don't seem to have got their administration act together

After seeing Halifax employee Howard strutting his stuff on T.V. to advertise their new Current Account, which earns a staggering 4% interest if you pay £1000 or more each month into the account, I rushed down to my local Halifax branch all set to do a deal! FIRST STEPS On 11th January 2001 I deposited a substantial sum with Halifax to open my new account. I happily gave them all the details of my existing current account with HSBC and was told ...
...automated credits to my new Halifax account. I sat for nearly an hour with a Halifax administrator going through all the do's and dont's of the new account. I couldn't really see any "dont's" so I signed there and then on the dotted line so to speak. It was explained to me that it could take up to eight weeks before the transfer was complete but they suggested and arranged a £600 interest free overdraft to tide me over during the transfer period. ...
