Halloumi cheese mmm.... not any cheese, you can't find any cheese like it. there is so many cheeses on the supermarket but this cheese can stand out of the shelf simply because of it's name. There is a lot of claims that hallaumi is originally from cypress or Greece and some claimed that turkey is the origin of halloumi, but no the original source of this cheese believe it or not is the middle east and i can tell you that it was from the Arab semi island then spread to Lebanon and Syria which was developed and enhanced. The name halloumi is even Arabic it comes halim or halloum that mean the ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to cook, unique texture, great BBQ alternative to vegis

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Fattening

A friend of mine recently introduced me to a new type of cheese called Halloumi. Being a cheese lover already, I was more then willing to try it but have to say that it is very different from any other type of cheese. Halloumi comes from Cyprus and is usually made from goats and sheep’s milk. However, the version of this cheese that tends to be sold in the supermarket’s, is made with cow’s milk and does taste slightly different from the traditional recipe. Halloumi has a texture which is most similar to Mozzarella and it is also the same light, almost white colour. Halloumi tends to come ... more

Advantages Advantages Tastes gorgeous, easy to cook, long shelf life

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sqeaks wheny ou eat it which is odd

I am lucky in the fact that both my parents are into cooking which means that I often get to try lots of new foods. A couple of years ago, Mum asked me to try some new cheese that she had just discovered, Halloumi Cheese and I have been addicted to the stuff ever since. About Halloumi Cheese Halloumi cheese actually originates from Cyprus and is traditionally made from a mixture of sheep and goats milk. Halloumi bought in supermarkets tends to contain cows milk, whereas Halloumi sold in traditional Cyprian shops / restaurants still retains the traditional recipe of sheep and goats milk. One of ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages high fat content

Halloumi cheese has to be one of my favourite foods to have in the house during the summer although it is not a seasonal product in my house we tend to eat more of it in the summer. Ok for those of you who have never experienced halloumi this is a cheese that comes from Cyprus and is traditionally made with a mixture of goats and sheeps milk although industrially made halloumi tends to contain cows milk which does slightly change the taste. The cheese is white in colour and has a texture very similar to mozzarella but is much more salty in flavour as this is generally stored in salt water. For ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Calorific

My friend and former flatmate really likes halloumi cheese, and after seeing her eat it one day I decided to buy it myself, as I really liked the look of it. Cheese in general is something I buy more of in the summer, usually to go on lunchtime salads, and as I'm a vegetarian it's a good way of getting enough protein. Normally I go for feta, or a 'salad cheese' variation, so I decided this would be a nice change. Halloumi is apparently a 'classic Cypriot cheese'. I bought my 250g pack from Tesco for £2.32. This is slightly more than I normally pay for cheese, but I was willing to give it a try ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages High calorie and high fat

Halloumi is a Turkish cheese, which originates from the Mediterranean island of Cyrus and which is registered as a protected Cypriot product within the US (but not the EU). The cheese has been around for 100’s of years and remains a popular ingredient in these parts but has only recently started to gain popularity in the UK. Halloumi is special because it is meant to be cooked and it has a unique flavour and texture with a tendency to squeak somewhat upon chewing! Halloumi is traditionally made from a mixture of goat's and sheep's milk, although nowadays the cheese tends to contain cows milk ... more

Halloumi cheese. I have to say that I had never heard of it until 5 years ago. I was introduced to it on a visit to see my Dad and his new overseas property in Cyprus. I remember him asking me if i had heard of it before and he told me it was a local delicacy a cheese that needed to be cooked! Well, that was certainly a first by me. To cook halloumi you heat a small amount of oil, and i would suggest you use olive oil, in a frying pan when the oil is ready you place slices of halloumi (approx 1/2 a centimeter thick) and fry gently until golden brown on both sides. This is great served with a ... more

Advantages Advantages Doesn't melt, very tasty snack, not too expensive

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not too cheap, has quite a salty taste too it

I first tried this cheese in London, where it was served at a cheese market, in 1cm or so cubes, and fried. What is this? Fried cheese? Yes! I tried some, and it was delicious! Other reviewers pretty much emphasise the same good points, it isn't cheap to have all the time but for an appetiser for meals or parties, or just a snack, it is a really interesting addition. A harder cheese, it has quite a distinctive and salty taste whilst fairly mild and soft when cooked. It doesn't melt and when browned it has a much nicer taste than when eaten raw (which it can be eaten as, quite happily, in a ... more

Advantages Advantages A very versatile cheese

Disadvantages Disadvantages Don't try and dry fry!

I am a huge cheese fan and like to try all different varieties. I first came across Halloumi cheese on a two week holiday to Cyprus. I purchased some in a local shop, close to where we were staying as we were having a barbecue that evening. What really impressed me about this cheese was its versatility. There are not many cheeses on the market that you can do so much with, you can eat it as it is, you can barbecue it, grill it, fry it.... a myriad of ways and what is unique about this cheese is that in my opinion, each way that you cook it makes it taste differently. I would say that my ... more
