Advantages Advantages Very cheap these days

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be hard to find these days

I love my gadgets and seldom travel without at least one piece of electronic wizardry about my person. I've fancied a PDA - Personal Digital Assistant - for some time, but they've always been just too expensive for what would really (or so I thought) be more of a toy than an essential bit of kit. Recently, though, I hit on the idea of buying a second-hand model. And I remembered that several years ago I had hankered after the Handspring Visor Deluxe. Not because it undercut and outperformed Palm's equivalent model, nor because plugin expansion packs made it infinitely adaptable, though both of ... more

The Handspring Visor ‘deluxe’ is a hand held PDA (Personal Digital Assistant). It uses the Palm operating system and can accept input through the hand writing recognition system (Graffiti) or the on screen keyboard. =THE BASICS= The PDA is 125mm long, 75mm wide and 20mm in thickness, including the cover. It weighs about 300 grams. It comes with a Leather wallet and HotSync cradle. It is available in various colours (mine is translucent blue). The display screen is 60 x 60mm. The screen displays 16 levels of grey scale is back lit and touch sensitive. The contrast is also adjustable. The whole ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap and with decent memory

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expansions are expensive and screen is black and white

I’ve been an owner of some form of hand-held computer for almost a year and a half now. I started with a Palm IIIe, which was a simple, 2Mb model with a monochrome screen. I used it almost constantly and quickly came to rely on it as a calendar, calculator, notepad, clock, entertainment tool, etc. When the Palm developed a fault, I got it repaired under warranty. When it was stood on and smashed, I was devastated. As soon as I could afford to, I replaced it. I wrestled with myself for a while as to what the replacement would be, then, foolishly, turned my back on the Palm platform and went for ... more

Advantages Advantages Fits in pocket, provides neccesary applications, backlight and uses graffiti and onscreen keyboard

I bought this PDA off ebay for the price of £20. Some people may think this is a high price for just an organiser, but considering what I managed to do with it, it was well worth the price! The PDA I bought off Ebay was silver. It arrived from ebay well packaged and with a USB Hotsync cradle. The user manual was emailed to me. The main disadvantage about it is that unlike some other PDAs it required 2 AAA batteries, which meant it wouldn't charge in the cradle. However, a couple of AAA batteries is supposed to last a few months on normal usage. It runs Palm OS 3.5, which is good but I wouldn't ... more

Advantages Advantages Small, flexible, relatively cheap (compared to a Psion!)

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Requires USB

A fantastic product, and great value. There is no better way to describe the Handspring Visor Deluxe. It comes with a few apps, such as a diary and a To Do list (a godsend for any as disorganised as me!). The main advantage is the versatility, though. Not only are there a range of modules to buy, which clip into the back of the unit (in a way not unlike games for old-style Gameboys and Sega Game Gears, but that's another matter!) but there is a wealth of software availabel for download. A number of big sites now have seperate sections for PDA Downloads, and the range is growing constantly ... more

Advantages Advantages Expansion of a system that already has some 75% of the pda market

Disadvantages Disadvantages None significant in basic role.

Handspring Visor deluxe PDA The world of personal digital assistants - literally, palm of the hand-sized computing devices - is growing apace. At the present time, it may be convenient to consider the options as two; those based on the Palm range and those which are not Palm. For the purposes of this review, we will assume that the reader has already chosen to go down the path marked "Palm operating systems". If undecided, there are excellent news groups on the Web and lurking on the edges of postings to these will greatly assist. The world of Palm has recently had a further split with the ... more

Advantages Advantages Good value for money

Disadvantages Disadvantages a lot of hotsync and infrared issues

I have been a Palm III owner for 2 years until I finally damaged it beyond repair. Being entirely dependent on my PDA I quickly rushed out and bought a replacement. Based on some good feedback I decided to purchase a Handspring Visor Deluxe. It had more memory than may Palm III (8mb versus 2MB) and was slightly better value for money than the 8mb Palm devices. Plus the device comes in a number of colours – yes I’m that fickle! Aside from the extra memory and the more modern design, the handspring can accept what are called “Springboard” modules. This means you can slot in accessories such as ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not Much Cop At All

Years ago a boss of mine (who bored an uncanny resemblance to the pointy haired boss in the Dilbert comics, both in appearance and attitude) advised me to get one of these babies to help with my organisational skills, like most advice given by that idiot I completely ignored him. I preferred using notebook and pen and still do. However seeing that they were going cheap on eBay I got mine for 18 quid I decided to have a go. If you decide to have a go at getting one you will have to bear in mind that this beastie is OLD technology and is very limited in what it can do. Ok so what does it do then ... more

Advantages Advantages small and lightweight, more power per bucks, loads of s/w about, ease of use and SPRINGBOARD (its worth shouting about)

Disadvantages Disadvantages i didnt have enough money to buy it sooner. nuff said

After doing some research into the PDA market i decided to plump for the Handspring Visor deluxe. what a great decision. In may be wise to go for the 8mb version as starting with the 2mb may prove costly if you decide to go for the upgrades to compare to the 8mb. With it you get a usb cradle and leather padded case (not so the 2mb). preloaded software a plenty and with it being palm os compatable there is an abundance of softeare available to expand your sw collection. Setting up syncing with your pc is a doddle and with extra software you can add conduits (syncing abillities)to you favourite ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to use, good value and useful

Disadvantages Disadvantages None for a sub £200 organiser

Five or so years ago, I bought a Psion 3a - and within months I had stopped using it for good. It was a very capable machine, but it was bulky, required typing and just didnt seem vital enough to carry it around. That has all changed with the Visor Deluxe, which I have had for over a year, and am still using. The Palm OS has become the de-facto standard for organisers in the past few years, because of the small devices that it powers, and its very quick to learn handwriting recognition. The main functions revolve around the DateBook, Address, ToDo and MemoPad applications. There is also a good ... more
