Advantages: Faster processor, 16-bit colour, Springboard expansion slot, nice casing colour Disadvantages: Screen flickers occasionally, fatter and heavier than the Visor Deluxe
...my hands on the new Handspring Visor Prism! Luckily, Handspring has learned from its past mistakes and ordering a Visor is now quick and painless.

Blue devil

The first thing that hit me when I opened the Prism box was that the machine looks COOL.
The Prism comes in only one colour -- Handspring calls it ``cobalt blue''.
What the pictures on the Handspring website don't show clearly is that the Prism is actually a very ... ...get it fully charged.
Handspring claims that the Prism will last about two weeks or six hours of continuous use on a full charge.
I found that with very heavy use (playing Zap!2016 for extended periods), the battery lasted three days and a little over a week of normal use.

I see colour

The main selling point of the Prism is its support for 16-bit colour, which means that the Prism can display up to 65,536 colours.

Advantages: Fast processor, Vibrant colour TFT screen displaying over 65,000 colours Disadvantages: Costly, Paint known to occassionally peel off casing
...to 3.3 to 3.5 unlike Handspring models which can only be updated i.e. 3.5 to 3.5.2
However, if like me, you plan on upgrading your PDA after a few years, the minor updates that Handspring provide will probably be sufficient.
Overall, because the Handspring is better value for money, its the money savvy consumer's choice. Of course, don't forget the all important expansion slot... oooooohhhhh..... useful for increasing memory when you go overboard ... ...colour models exist - the Handspring Visor Prism and the Palm IIIc. The Palm IIIc only displays 256 colours whilst the Prism displays a more vibrant 65,536 colours. There is lots of greyscale software out there so there is plenty of fun and useful stuff for non-colour PDA owners. For colour owners, the availability of colour software is a bit more limited, although greyscale programs should work on colour models too. Software is updated fairly regularly, ...

Advantages: Great color. Great battery life. Expandable. New datebook and calculator Disadvantages: Backlit screen won't show up in sunlight. Like any backlit device, fairly large size
...available and that is the Handspring Prism. First the cons: large and somewhat heavy. You can't really put this in a pocket. I don't recommend putting any Palm or Handspring in a pocket though. Its too easy to sit on it and break it or at the very least its uncomfortable. (I wear handhelds on my belt so this isn't a big deal for me). Can't see the screen in sunlight. Its the opposite of the old Palms, you want less light not more. This works very ... ...people. Has the Handspring module slot for adding stuff like modems, more ram, camera, etc. Improved datebook. Improved calculator. I really love the calculator, it has conversions for everything! meters to miles, F to C, volume, etc. Put in 1 then tap L for liter, then tap gal button, number changes to .2641 instantly. Small drop down menu makes the buttons change:Math, trig, finance, logic, stats, weight/temp, length, area, and volume. USB hotsynching ...

Advantages: Better screen display, smart cradle Disadvantages: Expensive, heavy ,thick.
...the first time. But as Handspring is only a licensee of the software, it has taken the company six months to come up with a colour product of their own.
The Prism has a number of benefits over the Palm IIIc. The screen can display 65,000 colours, as apposed to the Palm's 256. It includes additional software, such as Datebook, City Time and an enhanced calculator. It has a built-in microphone and contains a Springboard expansion slot, which can accommodate ... ...- the Visor Prism 16bit colour screen is crispier, clearer and more vibrant than th Palm IIIc. Its built in microphone, Springboard expansion slot and standard USB connectivity make it an attractive offer. But at £100 moremore than the Palm IIIc, Handspring have a hard sell on their hands. ...

Advantages: Screen, Fast USB Sync, Springboard slot Disadvantages: Speed, non-upgradeable OS
...because the Prism, like all Handspring Visors, lacks a flashable ROM.
On the positive side, it does have the Springboard slot (see my Visor Deluxe review for more on that), it synchronises with your PC via USB (rather than serial, like all but the most recent Palms) which is much faster, and a rechargeable battery (this can work both ways though, you can carry round a spare set of AAA batteries on the move, whereas it might be hard to find somewhere ...

Advantages: Colourful, Bright, Reactive, lots of thrid party support Disadvantages: hard to find good third party support. hard to see in sunlight,
The Handspring makes organising so easy. You could describe it as fun to use, it’s not bulky and comfortable to hold, but is also solid and chunky and you can feel even the strongest person would have a problem breaking it. Wonderful except for a few flaws, one the cradle connection is temperamental, two third party programs tend to be buggy and can promote the machine to resetting itself constantly. But on the plus, I have dropped mine several times ...
