Advantages Advantages An insight into everyone's favourite serial killer!

Disadvantages Disadvantages The plot isn't as strong as other elements of the novel

One thing that makes you realise how powerful literature can be is when you find yourself rooting for a murderer. Hannibal Rising introduces us to the boy who would grow up to be everyone's best-loved charming genius/cannibal, opening as the Second World War takes its effect on Lecter Castle in Eastern Europe. I've only read Silence of the Lambs, which impressed me greatly, but even one novel lets you know that Hannibal Lecter isn't your average serial killer and I was interested to discover more about his background. And that's what Hannibal Rising is. It answers the question "What the hell ... more

Advantages Advantages A thrilling story, great characters, decent insight into how it all began

Disadvantages Disadvantages Perhaps a little too transparant as a book for a movie

He is perhaps the most famous, freighting psychological killer to have ever graced literature. The return of Hannibal doesn't see him picking up where the last novel left off; rather Hannibal Rising gives an insight into what caused Hannibal to become the beast we all now know. The book explores his live during the war hiding away with his parents in the forest to escape the front lines. When his entire family are killed towards the end of the war, something changes in Hannibal and the rest of the novel explores and develops that change in personality and psyche. I've really enjoyed the ... more

Advantages Advantages Insightful, thought provoking, absorbing

Disadvantages Disadvantages Occasionally disjointed, lacking in psychological explanations

FIRST IMPRESSIONS I had to do a double take when walking past Waterstones shortly before Christmas. A new Hannibal Lecter novel? I'd had no idea! Normally I object to paying out for hardback novels however Waterstones were offering the book at half price (normally 17.99) and I had adored all the books in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy (films too). The book is A5 size with a sleek black cover and embossed gold lettering. The small picture in the centre of the front cover of a moon and a heron is in fact a reference to a poem contained within the book although obviously this isn't something I knew ... more

Advantages Advantages The fans will enjoy it

Disadvantages Disadvantages The franchise is running out of steam

A mute, half starved boy stumbles out of a frozen wasteland at the end of the war with a chain around his neck and a mind haunted by an idyllic childhood torn apart by an experience so horrific he can remember it only in his nightmares. This could be the plot synopsis for a sensitive study of the power of memory and the strength of the human spirit when faced by the horrors of war, the boy in question though is one Hannibal Lecter. Instead what we get is a brisk account of how what the blurb on the back of the book describes as ‘one of the most haunting characters in all of literature’ became ... more

    Advantages Advantages It is short

    Disadvantages Disadvantages It is rubbish

I'm not normally into the horror/thriller genre but ever since I saw Silence of the Lambs I have been a closet Hannibal 'fan' (if that's the right word, I don't want to sound like some sort of psychotic maniac!). I actually got Hannibal Rising as a present and couldn't wait to read it before I saw it at the cinema. The book is basically a prequel to Silence of the Lambs. It attempts to describe some of the aspects that turned Hannibal into the monster that we know and, in a very strange sense of the word, love. The book follows young Hannibal as he goes through a very traumatic event which is ... more

Advantages Advantages Great Plot and Character Development

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Hannibal Rising is a great read. From the moment i picked it up i was hooked and over the two days it took me to finish reading it, it was never far from my person. When i first heard that Hannibal rising was to be released i must admit i groaned, thinking that like so many prequels before it this was just another attempt to breath new life into and ultimatley make more money from a tired franchise. How wrong i was. Hannibal Rising stands as an independant book in its own right, assuming no prior knowledge of the Hannibal Lector saga, while still being written is such a way so that Hannibal ... more

Advantages Advantages Good read, get to see hannibal as a child

Disadvantages Disadvantages not as good as the others, too short

The start of a very long journey is ahead of Mr Lecter. In this book we see the deaths, murders and people that shaped Hannibal. Compared to the other books which Harris has written in this series it does lack a certain something. It is well put together and a very labourious read. You might need a dictionary if you are under 18 years of age. I did feel somewhat sorry for Hannibal while reading this. His struggle through this book is heart wrenching at times. Considering this book is focused more on revenage then love it does have some beautiful moments between Hannibal and Lady Murasaki ... more

Advantages Advantages A short book, but interesting

Disadvantages Disadvantages Couldnt find any really

Having never read Thomas Harris before, I was very impressed. I have watched the films of Hannibal, and found them to be enjoyable, but never read the books. I found this book to be thought provocaing. I loved the way the book flows from one page to the next, although the flash-backs can be a bit confusing if the book is put down in the middle. It kept me reading and turning the pages, though it wasn't one of those books that you can't put down. It does have some violent material, as you would expect, but is not overly gory. It explains how Hannibal became so emotionless, and how he began his ... more
