Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Why read this one? I have read the first instalments in this series of books and the magical tale with its fascinating characters has me hooked. I was eager to continue with the adventures of Harry Potter. The cover drew me in due to the fact that it includes a dragon and these mythical creatures fascinate me, always have done, and always will. The blurb is extremely intriguing and the praise from a number of sources is enthusiastic. I had little doubt that this would be fun. Short synopsis….. Another birthday arrives and we see young Harry Potter join his ... more

Advantages Advantages Vivid characters, exciting plot, unpredictable right to the end

Disadvantages Disadvantages Huge book! Makes it difficult to hold, and the story is slow at times

I remember watching a clip from American TV of the US release of 'Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'. A young girl witha distinct accent finishes reading the beginning and then suddenly exclaims "OK, that's not how it's supposed to start." Many readers of the other Harry Potter books will have noticed how different this book is from the others. Being so untypical it gives JK Rowling greater freedom for creativity in order to break the previous pattern of her other books. But it also leads to a distinct change in style that I'm not sure all fans have reacted well to. The beginning is eerily ... more

Advantages Advantages Action packed, tackles supposedly "adult" issues.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Little in the way of characterisation. Too many plot twists.

I hate the Harry Potter phenomenon. I hate the merchandise, toys, films and spaghetti. However, I have to concede Rowling has succeeded in doing something many authors can't do. Make my son read and for that I am truly thankful. Being the Worlds Greatest Dad (that’s what the mug says anyway) I have recently made the great effort to read this book to see why my ten year old son is so enthralled with the whole Harry Potter experience. I have chosen the Goblet of Fire as my first Harry Potter novel simply because we have two copies in the house and have to admit I approached it with considerable ... more

Plot - Welcome to the fourth year at hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry, which as always is packed with more adventures than you could shake a firebolt at. The book begins in a creepy old manor house with whispered voices, a muggle and a murderer! How can this all be relevant to the story of Harry Potter?! For the members of the wizarding world this book starts with high excitement. It is the Quidditch World Cup, and wizards from far and wide are meeting up to celebrate the best Quidditch players in the world. It is the final between Bugaria and Ireland and their fans are out in force ... more

    Advantages Advantages Another excellent book

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not as good as number three!

Right that’s it then – when is the fifth Harry Potter book coming out? I shall be queuing outside the bookshop when it does! Well maybe not, but I shall certainly be buying it as soon as possible. As you must have guessed by now I have just finished reading the fourth book in the series, which is entitled Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It is by far the thickest of all the volumes so far being about twice the size of any one of the other three. This book is about Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts School of Wizardry and is much darker than the previous three, in fact someone actually gets ... more

    Advantages Advantages Everything!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Nothing!

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth book in the series, and has perhaps the most ‘epic’ plotline. This book is definitely where the series grows up, and in my own personal ‘hit list’ of Harry Potter books, it is rated as number three. **Blurb** (from the back of the book) “It is the summer holidays, and one night Harry Potter wakes up with his scar burning. He has had a strange dream, one that he can't help worrying about...until a timely invitation from Ron Weasley arrives: to nothing less than the Quidditch World Cup! Soon Harry is reunited with Ron and Hermione and gasping at ... more

Advantages Advantages Gripping read where the whole Harry Potter world really starts to gel together.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Possibly a little too complex and long for little ones.

I've just had Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire peeled from my trembling hands, and I'm now slowly coming back to my senses. Really, now I'm beginning to realise that Harry Potter is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine and I shouldn't be enjoying reading it quite this much, but I guess a book having this effect on me is just a testament to the skill of Joanne Rowling. I must say, I wasn't expecting a great deal from this book. I'd read the first 3 Harry Potter novels. I'd enjoyed the first and second immensely. When you were reading them you were aware that they were kids' novels, but they ... more

Advantages Advantages Very detailed and complicated plot

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too many adult themes, may not be suitable for young children

The Goblet of Fire is the fourth (and latest) book in the Harry Potter series. At over seven hundred pages it is the longest book and perhaps the most interesting. Introduction For those who don’t know: Harry Potter is an orphan child who has grown up with his Uncle and Aunty (The Dursley’s) and due to their hatred of magic he does not know of his magical heritage. Perhaps the most famous wizard in the world, Harry is famed for surviving an attack by Lord Voldermort, the evil wizard who killed his parents. As Harry finally finds out about his heritage, he attends Hogwarts, the ... more

Advantages Advantages funny, dramatic, great story-telling

Disadvantages Disadvantages if it's not your thang, it's not your thang!

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Thank God, another Harry Potter op, we don’t get enough of them on Ciao!” In fact this is the 90th opinion to be written on the Goblet of Fire alone. Weighing in at a whopping 636 pages, this is more like a doorstop than a work of fiction. If you are a Harry Potter novice, you may as well get involved before the hype-machine goes into overdrive with the launch of the first Harry Potter film later this year. Otherwise you will be left wondering what drugs people are on as they wander around talking about avoiding bludgers and the best ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Takes a bit to get going

There's something extremely reassuring and comforting somehow about a nice, thick hardback book - it's very substantial and warm in a totally inexplicable way. Paperbacks are much more flimsy, almost pamphlet like, and just do not have the same PRESENCE. In a similar way, the latest Harry Potter book, HP and the Goblet of Fire (HP4 from now on), is a quite distant cousin from its predecessors, HP and the Philosopher's Stone, HP and the Chamber of Secrets and HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban. HP3 covered the most pages of the three, at 317. HP4, as well as initially only being released in ... more
